Flyers sign Carcillo to 1-year deal

POSTED: Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 2:27 PM

The Flyers signed forward Dan Carcillo today to a 1-year contract, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. Carcillo will earn $1.075 million in 2010-11.

“We are happy to have Dan under contract for the 2010-11 season,” Holmgren said in a statement about the 6-foot, 205-pound left winger.

Carcillo's signing puts the Flyers approximately $2.497 million over the league's $59.4 million salary cap. Holmgren will have until the regular season begins on Oct. 7 to pare the roster back down to fit the cap.

Carcillo, 25, had 12 goals, 10 assists and a team-high 207 penalty minutes in 76 regular-season games this past season. He led the team in hits with 194. He also became the first player, alongside Boston Bruins’ forward Shawn Thornton, to be assessed a fighting major in the NHL’s Winter Classic, on Jan. 1, 2010.

Carcillo originally filed for salary arbitration last week before agreeing to this deal.

he was one of the 3 best flyers players the last 20 games of the season. yes he takes maddening penalties at times but I thought Laviolette did a good job of reigning him in a bit. He is way more skilled than given credit for he just needs to continue to walk that tightrope of being irritating and being dumb. You need players like him(that have some skill) to win.

BigShow: "There has not been a bonafide scoring threat-type player (or two) on this team in quite awhile" What???? Jeff Carter was 2nd in the NHL in goals 2 seasons ago and Gagne notched north of 30 that year, and at the same time we had numerous players (Knuble, Hartnell, Lupul, Briere, Richards) with 25 or more goals. Not sure about your comment re signing low scoring players....there is this thing called the 3rd and 4th lines, you know? No team has a roster of 30 goal scorers, so quit whining and be happy that we at least have a good number of guys that can score.

Like DrM and philswin 17....WHY??? What is the point other then to draw stupid penalties.....And please don't trade Gagne, he should retire a Flyer.

Davezmentaltees: "I really think he singlehandedly lost a couple games in the Finals" Whatever. He played in 2 games in the Finals. The Flyers WON one of those games. The other game he played 11 minutes and was a -1 with one 2 minute penalty during which the BHawks did not score...yippee. If he was -5, -4, -3, or even -2, or otherwise racked up a bunch of penalties, you would have an argument. Try again.

MOCKBACCCP: Look, i am no Powe fan, especially since he is yet another center we don't need, but don't try and say Nodl is anything better. He can actually score? He has 1 goal in 48 games with the Flyers. Powe had 9 goals in 63 games for the Flyers last year, making Powe a scoring juggernaut compared to Nodl. Enough said.

Why? Goons don't win in today's NHL. Europeans do.

Trivia question: What 2 Flyer forwards had the best +/- on the team last year? Carter and Richards? Maybe Gagne and Leino? Oh, how about the young guns Giroux and JVR? WRONG. It was Blair Betts at +7 and....drum roll...Dan Carcillo at +5. And most of the rest of the team isn't even close to those guys (Giroux was -9, Leino -8, Hartnell -6, Richards -2, Briere -2, JVR -1). It just goes to show that role players have value and we just signed a very good one for this team. Rejoice.

thrilladelf: Why do you think Carcillo will not play in the playoffs? He played in all (or all but one) of the playoff games in 2009 and 17 playoff games in 2010. He wasn't even a consideration to be scratched until he got injured (the severity of the injury was acknowledged after the season was over). He had an overtime winner and was +1 for the playoffs in 2010. He was +3 in the playoffs in 2009 despite the Flyers getting bounced in the first round. That hardly sounds like a liability to me.

I dont know what most of you guys are talking about with signing carcillo is a bad move. Last year when he went on the number 1 line with richards and gagne there were amazing, once they took him out the first line stop producing dramatically. he brings energy physical play hes calmed down alot and can score as he proved last year.
