Flyers win series

POSTED: Sunday, April 22, 2012, 2:56 PM
Claude Giroux checks Sidney Crosby just after the opening faceoff of Game 6. (Yong Kim/Staff Photographer)

And a 24-year-old shall lead them.

Claude Giroux. Yes.

On the first shift of what turned out to be the clinching game of the Flyers-Penguins series, this is what the Flyers’ best player did. He leveled Penguins captain Sidney Crosby in the first 5 seconds of the game. He scored a goal at 32 seconds. And as a kind-of-nervous Wells Fargo Center erupted in celebration, turned his own celebration into an exhortation.

“Let’s go,” he yelled, to the players near him and the thousands surrounding him in a big, orange embrace. “Let’s go.”

And so, they did.

Capping off one of the most productive playoff series by a Flyers player with that goal and another assist -- giving him six goals and eight assists for the series -- Giroux led the Flyers to a 5-1 win over the Penguins. After taking the first three games of the series, and then sweating through the next two, it was Giroux who made the final afternoon his. And while we still do not know yet what team the Flyers will be playing in the second round, this remains an emphatic statement by a young, rebuilt team -- and by its unquestioned leader.

It would be unfair to label this as Giroux’s emergence in the post-season. The truth is, that happened 2 years ago when Giroux scored 10 goals and had 11 assists in 23 games as the Flyers marched to Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final before losing to Chicago. But this has been somehow different, better.

The start of that game will not soon be forgotten, not can it be understated. On some level, the Flyers themselves had to be as nervous as the crowd seemed to be. This is a young team, after all, and to see a 3-0 lead in the series shrink to 3-2 had to be at least a little bit unnerving. A bad start would have just fed into whatever bad thoughts were already in place.

But Giroux made sure that did not happen.

With that, on to wherever.

Lots of flyers and coaches trash talking the kid. Haven't you learned that this is
fuel to the fire? Pens in 5.

You Flyers fans are a joke. The Pens are stronger, faster, and more talented than the the Flyers. That's why they get more PP chances. The Flyers are slow and can't keep up. Pens in 5. Flyers won't sniff another win.

Hallelujah!!!!! Giroux said the Flyers wouldn't be embarrassed again and then he went out there and decked Crosby 5 seconds into the game and blew it past Fluery 30 seconds later. Reminds me of Mark Messier guaranteeing the Rangers victory over the Devils. It's so sweet to eliminate the Penguins because everybody kept saying they were the better team. Even after the 2nd period with the Flyers up 4-1 Mike Milbury was saying somebody was going to come out and "do something big" for Pittsburgh.
Plus the Penguins are so dirty...Malkin elbowed Grossmann to the head giving him a concussion and who could forget Neal cheap-shotting Couturier and then trying to hit Giroux in the head? Have a nice summer, Pengoons.

I agree about Malkin. I think after this series I've learned to hate him more than Crosby. Crosby may be a whiny, cheap, sissy, but Malkin went out every shift and tried to take someones - anyones - head off. He's a dirty POS.

Flyers played their best game of the post season today, 60 full minutes they were on the Pens! And it showed with a dominant victory. If they play like this against their next opponent, one game at a time, they will go far!! Let's Go Flyers!!

You got it, Pete. Nobody can choke like the Pens.

2010 - Defending Cup champion Penguins eliminated in Pittsburgh by number 8 seed Canadiens. Can you say "cheese champs?"

2010 - Pens blow 3-1 series lead over Tampa and choke out in the first round.

2012 - Penguins the Las Vegas betting favorites to win the Cup are again eliminated in the first round - by the hated Flyers.

Penguins picked up the attitude of their captain and superstar and played with almost no class. Malkin and Crosby take dirty cheapshots and are protected, but whine the most. League would be better off without them. 28 showed them what a true MVP is.

G completely outplayed Cyndy Crosby today and in this series. If Bryz can get hot, this team will be hard to beat.
Plus a lot of favorites are getting knocked off. Gotta love this team and the effort they give.

Giroux is simply the best player in the game right now. That's all. Best skill. Best attitude. Best competitiveness. And most honorable. He can carry the entire team on his back if need be. Lucky for us, we have a great team around him. This is going to be a fun postseason. Go Flyers.

with 7:22 left in the third period, during faceoff stopage, crosby came on the ice to take the face off and the entire building started "Crosby SUCKS! Crosby SUCKS!". Then I thought it might not be a good idea to wake the dragon. But quick second thought.... Crosby's just a little girl :) Bye bye Cindy :) Go do some modeling now during summer :)

G is routinely brilliant, today just another game where he steps up, sets the tone and all the pieces fall into place. Couturier once again gave Malkin the business, can't believe he's 19, great future ahead of him along with the other rookies, on to the next round.

I am waiting for the Penguins fans.... as classless as their team.... Bryz played great in this game...that shoulder save was top notch...very steady...the one goal he gave up was just a great shot by Malkin and Neal screened him... cool as a summer breeze... and the Flyers team, pure guts, determination and skill....fun to watch

Ottawa was almost as tough on NYR this season as NYR was on the Flyers. That's a good thing for us Flyers fans, isn't it? Or would you rather see Philly try to reverse an eight-game losing streak instead?

What happened in the regular season doesn't mean much in the playoffs. If the Flyers play like they did today in game 6 they can beat any team.

P.S. I told you the Rangers would choke again,,,

12 deep forwards- all who can play w/JVR back. That is a major problem for everyone else in addition to G playing at world-class level. Getting Grossman & Meszaros back will help the push forward. If Bryz stays steady-----

Good Stuff! Great to silence the 'experts' that all claimed the PenQueens would win the Cup. Can't stomach the blatant favouritism of the Pens & Crosby any longer. Giroux is a perfect blend of the best attributes of Bobby Clarke and Peter Forsberg. This young Flyers team will be a force for several years to come. Solid performance by Bryz today. On to the next series!

Congratulations to all of us. I'd like to thank Giroux's hands and skates for making him so great! (lol)

So long to Sidney "W**** B****" Crosby. Good bye W.B. Crosby. I hope you brought a towel to wipe your v***** for the bus ride home.

Also the unsung Fly guys this series, Jagr, Coutz, Talbot, and even Bryz in games 1, 5, and 6 (I know, but c'mon if we never give him some love no one ever will).

Celebrate today, on to round 2 tomorrow. I don't care who we play from the Rump Rangers on down the line. We can take em if we keep playing like this and Bryz stays steady.

Absolutely great effort by ALL the team!! Hats off the entire series to rookie Sean Couturier who had the monumental task of playing Malkin. To me, Malkin was the most threatening player of the Pens. He has more talent and heart than the crybaby, and more dangerous. Anybody know where I can purchase a picture (shown above) of G absolutely bulldozing Cindy?

Great, great win for this new, young group of Flyers. Giroux was outstanding today, good legit check of Crosby, and, more importantly, a tone setting goal. Pronger, in his criticism of Giroux, likely sensed that Claude could be great(and without Richards, Giroux is definitely emerging). Now, let's get ready for the next round; the Pens are dead. Let's go Flyers!

The golden boys are no longer Crosby/Malkin but Courtier and Shenn. The Pens are on the downslide

This was a complete team win. Props to every player on the ice today who worked, worked, worked all through the entire sixty minutes. The big time play of G is inspiring to be sure but the team responded to his attitude and energy and that is what born leaders do, lead by example. Give Bryz props for coming in focused and playing at the top of his game today. Let's hope he gets hot again like he was in March for the next round.

Very happy to be wrong in thinking the Flyers were cooked after game 5. Seen it so many times before. Deeply impressed with what these youngsters can do (with some timely help from the geezers!) Clade Giroux is shaping up to be a captain like Philly hasn't had in a long time.

And NBC, thank you for sending Pierre to DC today, though there would have been some satisfaction in forcing him to stand there and watch the Pens get force-fed a big plate of "You're Not so Great After All."

Giroux's smashing of his stick at the end of Game 5 reminded me of Bobby Clarke, who after losing a defensive-zone face-off cost his netminder - a goalie nobody would ever hear of, Michel Belhumeur - his first NHL shutout with only 14 seconds to go, smashed his stick over the goal. Giroux has that same intensity.

2010 - Penguins eliminated in Pittsburgh by the number 8 seed Canadiens.

2011 - Pens blow a 3-1 series lead over Tampa and choke out of the playoffs in the first round.

2012 - Penguins, Las Vegas cup favorite, again choke out in the first round - eliminated by the hated Flyers.

Now I know when I used to live in the Mayfair section of Phila that when I flushed a toilet where did it go? It landed in Pittsburgh. OY, I wouldnt go there to throw up.

Way to go Flyers. Giroux set the tone early and the rest of the team reponded!! WOO HOO YOU CANT BEAT US. Been of the Penguins facebook page making their fans eat it all afternoon. So much fun !!!

Did the Penguin fans mention that the Flyers haven't won a championship since 1975?

Did they mention that, with their goaltending history, they probably won't win another until 2075?

Did they mention that Philadelphia has one championship since '83 and it was bought (Phillies payroll of what, 200 million)?

Hmmm, and you fail to mention the only reason your beloved PenQueens have Crybaby and Geni is because they sucked for so long, they got the first draft pick every year for what? 10 years? Go crawl back in your hole.

If all Pens trolls have is the championship talk and blaming the refs, that is sad. You lost, you can't beat us, and go Flyers! I knew you couldn't be classy.

You are just jealous because your baseball team can't spend. Plus, the Phils payroll is higher now than then. Go Flyers!

I actually wasn't blaming the refs. It wasn't the refs fault, but I had to make a post that sounded like all of the whining I heard from the Philly fans in the last week.

I mean, seriously, I've never heard so much whining from a team leading a series.

We've never heard so much mouthing off from fans of a team that was the Cup favorite and then handed a humiliating loss by their arch-rival.

    Crosby cries to the ref:

    Then Crosby cries on TV:

Even if we go down in the second round. We still kicked your feeble asses in 6. We don't have to wait a whole week to call you Cindy worshipers a bunch of losers: you already are.

That's the problem with petty bitterness. It doesn't win championships.

But I guess you'd have to win one to appreciate that. Enjoy the small victories while we enjoy the large ones.

    You're enjoying a "large victory?"

Penguins, Las Vegas cup favorites, eliminated in the first round.
The second consecutive first round humiliation for the "mighty Penguins," as Crosby is held scoreless in the last two games when his team needed him most.

Obviously it doesn't, because your Crybaby and Geni are going golfing tomorrow while the Flyers move on.

Give "G" his due, celebrate tonite, but don't get too high, people. Flyers need keep a low profile the longest possible. Get rest and keep sharp focus. We need spread leadership among the others for a while, and keep Jagr&Giroux fresh till mid-June. Can somebody remove a lemon from Crosbys mouth, please? Sour expression all the time....

Philly DOES stink. It is dirty and violent! People work for a living in Philly. It's a blue collar place and there is no room for anyone too prissy to get their hands dirty. People don't like to put up with incompetence in Philly.

If you were treated badly, I can't imagine why.

Anyway, all those things are the reason you love the place, not the reason you run away scared.

Giroux is all hockey player. Hats off to G. Pens classlessness still evident. Glad to see Gus get the chance he had earned. Holmgren's organeyezation looking good with this team's depth. Bring on next.

Hockey's a sport for people who can't play real sports. Fact - white dudes can't hang with us so they play hockey. So stupid. Who cares.

This city has no business celebrating this Little Engine That Could "sport." You know it's not a real sport when the only black people playing got cut from their high school basketball teams.

@LDPhilly: We can celebrate anything we want. Unlike you, we don't care if the players on the team are black, white, pink, or purple. If you're not a hockey fan, why are you even here? Your ignorance is truly distasteful. You are wrong because your bitterness and malice has blinded your judgements. I bet 100% NHL players like Evander Kane and Wayne Simmonds could make many basketball teams if they wanted to. They however love hockey more, unlike you sir.
