Flyers sign Jagr, Talbot; deal Versteeg

POSTED: Friday, July 1, 2011, 1:31 PM

Do you like the Jagr signing?
Yes
No

Didn't the Flyers say they wanted to get younger?

On Friday, they signed 39-year-old winger Jaromir Jagr, the five-time NHL scoring champion who played the last three seasons in Russia.

The Penguins and Red Wings dropped out of the bidding earlier in the day.

Jagr signed a one-year deal for $3.3 million _ reportedly $1.3 million more than Pittsburgh offered.

The Flyers later signed another ex-Penguin, center Max Talbot, to a five-year deal that totals $9 million. The 27-year-old Talbot had eight goals and 13 assists for Pittsburgh last season.

By all accounts, Talbot is a character guy and a lockerroom leader.

Later in the day, the Flyer sent Kris Versteeg to Florida for second and third-round draft picks. The move could have opened room to re-sign Ville Leino, but the winger soon signed a six-year $27 million deal with Buffalo ($4.5 million per year).

The Flyers also inked RFA Jacub Voracek for one season at $2.25 million.

After a brilliant NHL career, Jagr went to Russia's KHL the last three seasons. In his last NHL season, he had 25 goals and 46 assists for the Rangers in 2007-08.

Yes, the Flyers would be thrilled with that kind of production.

   That seems like a longshot.

Last year, Jagr had 19 goals and 31 assists in the KHL, then had five goals in nine games for the Czech Republic National Team in the IIHF World Championships.

The Flyers also signed another past-his-prime player, 6-3, 220-pound Andreas Lilja, a soon-to-be 36-year-old defenseman who had one goal and six assists for Anaheim last season and was minus-15.

Free-agent Sean O'Donnell signed with Chicago.

Because the Flyers do not have many big bodies at center, it seemed to make UFA Michal Handzus an interesting option.  A former Flyer, the 6-foot-4, 219-pound Handzus was high on the Flyers' FA list. Ditto Erik Cole, Jamie Langenbrunner, Michael Ryder, Simon Gagne and John Madden.

    Apparently, all were too expensive.

Good stuff. I know Stamkos is a phenomenal talent and one of those 'once-in-a-lifetime' guys that when an opportunity comes up, you need to jump on it but in signing him they have him and won't be able to sign any real depth behind him (if he goes down with an injury what then would happen?). At least with being able to sign 3-5 guys they get needed scoring options AND depth. Either way was a win-win.

Because Schenn + Simmonds + freed up space for one more player is better than Richards

Handzus? Really? We're now desperate for offense and we're signing a defensive-minded 4th line C? I like Zeus and all, but the guy is old and a shell of his former self. We need some scoring. I would've sworn that after dealing Carter and Richards, Homer would have had something up his sleeve to get back some offense. Guess not.

TSN Canada's now reporting that not only has Handzus not signed with the Flyers, but they haven't even had any contact. So, who knows...they also said that Stamkos and TB aren't even close to a deal. Which makes me wonder how they'd match an offer from the Flyers. But I guess that's not happening now.

Monty, scoring isn't the only thing we lost in Richards and Carter. We lost a good checking center and need a replacement. Do you want Giroux filling that role? He could do it well, but the tradeoff would be less points from him. How about Schenn? Do you want a rookie chasing around the best lines in hockey? I think they need to do something substantial in acquiring some scoring, but for the right price, I'll take Zeus in the shutdown role any day.

It says here that the offense will struggle mightily, no matter which second tier FA they sign. The went from having a couple semi-stars to having no stars. Flyers are going down the same road the Phillies did....concentrate on defense and goaltending and hope to win 2-1.

hows that working out for the phillies anyway? oh yea thats right they have the best record in the league. flyers are still going to have 2 very good lines which is what most teams have anyway. sorry we wont be 3rd in the league in scoring again cause that won us exactly how many cups again? ZERO. flyers offense will be fine. and no stars? i guess giroux and briere arent stars. i think i do remember them both being in the all-star game last year while carter and richards were back home. and who actually showed up in the playoffs? carter and richards? NOPE. briere and giroux? YES in a big way. everyone just needs to chill out.

oh yeah....if they are going to sign a FA who gives them 30 points a year, sign a 26 year old, not a 34 year old.

Raggamonkey, I hear what you're saying. I don't mind him as a 4th line checking C--he'd fill that role fine. But only if it's cheap, and they still need to do more than that. I'm just not convinced any of the other FAs out there really make up for the scoring part that they lost.

Guys, Zeus is a good pickup! He is durable and kills penalties. This also gives us depth at center which we need. Besides, Homer is not done yet.

All these people complaining about Handzus or maybe we go after John Madden on short term deal need to remember that we need to fill Richards contributions on faceoffs and the PK...they need to get leino under wraps and Erik Cole would be nice..or if you can get Gagne at a good price, bring back number 12...also anyone complaining about age needs to realize this is a very young team and they need some veteran leadership..every cup winning team has had balance in age/experience...this isn't NHL 12 on EA Sports...you just don't load up your team with all stars...you need 3rd and 4th line players that compliment and fill roles compared to your 1 & 2 lines..

The Flyers could have had both Jaromir Jagr and Peter Forsberg
on the same team when they were rookies if they had been smart -
instead they get them both when they are over the hill
and on the downside of their careers -
but I think Forsberg had more left in the tank than Jagr is going to.

I agree with Northcounty...doesn't really seem like they have a plan. What are the priorities: getting younger (Jagr = nope), changing the lockeroom (Richie/Carter = yes), trying to win the Cup this upcoming year (Jagr/Lilja = no), just spending money 'cause we're thrilled to have some cap room, etc.??? Would have preferred Leino and Cole.

It ought to us something that Ken Holland bailed on Jagr. Now Ken Holland is a real hockey man and has run the Wings for 15 years. He's built a club with a sense of tradition and patience while always upgrading the team- they not the Orange and Black are in the mix every year..........oh and he's won 3 cups.

Lost in all of this is the fact that they are letting Ville hit the open market. Where is the sense in signing a 39 year old guy that hasn't played in the NHL for 3 years and letting a promising player who has been an integral part of any success over the past two years, go. Combine that with the lack of effort in signing Stamkos, I'm severely confused. You had me with the last two moves, showing me promising building blocks for the future, but then you refuse the future with two throwing away two potential franchise players in exchange for a one year contract with a has been?! infuriating.

Jagr's numbers were in Russia but he played in less than 50 games. Unless his ego gets in the way on this team this is a good pickup. Need a defensive offensive player to be used on the penalty kill. I expect the next FA signing won't drop any bombshells and everyone on here still looking for a big name signing (only Richards or Stamkos will satisfy you b/c there aren't many big names that you "fans" recognize) will cry about it. We're playing from the net out for the foreseeable future. Get used to it. Nothing wrong with that. Expect big seasons out of Brierre, JVR and Giroux. Thrown in a couple other 20 goal scorers and the drop off from this past season won't be so damning. Relax. It's the 4th of July weekend. Not April.

everyone needs to chill out, its July, not April. Jagr will provide some quality production. But we don't need him to score 20 goals this year. If he does, good. The Flyers are banking on Giroux and JVR to pick it up big time, and I think they are right to go with that. Right now its about finding supplemental pieces and building from the goal out. You all cried about needing a big time goalie, and now are crying that we don't have enough offensive fire power. Will you ever be happy?

What did you expect the Flyers to do in free agency? They traded Carter and Richards. One to clear salary and cut bait on a guy who can score some goals (in regular season only) so that they can bring in the best available goalie. Richards, somewhat puzzling move. I guess you don't take the C away from a guy as much as you simply trade him away. Richards wasn't an offensive machine. Scored 20 something I think this season but was a guy I thought you could lean on. But, he's gone. We got value in return. Let's see what happens with it. The only move I don't like is letting Powe go. Leino didn't have a great season last year. I'd like for the Flyers to keep him but not at the $4m/yr price. He had a nice postseason two years ago. $4m is too high for the season he just had. Now, in free agency what does everyone want them to do? Is Stamkos and Richards the end all be all in FA? We lost offense this off season and gained defense (goalie). Hopefully, the guys expected to step up step up and one or two of the others surprise everyone and overachieve. I'd say the majority of the championship teams go into the season with question marks. They get better, lucky, hot, catch a few breaks, etc. and win it all. You don't win the Cup in the summer. It's won on the ice. Beyond the trades, Richards and Stamkos, what does anyone commenting out there want the Flyers to do today?

News flash. The Flyers have also reached agreements with Wayne Gretzky, Messier, and Clarke. They have all shown skills offensively. Come on. The Flyers bought a name and he is no longer worth 3 million a year.

I don't understand this signing at all. I get that we needed a veteran or two, but he does not fit what we need. He is not a top 9 forward, and since when has Jagr been known for his defense, something he would need playing on the checking line. We lost penalty killers in Richards, Carter and Powe, and Jagr does not add to that area at all.

Darryl Powe's numbers look pretty similar to Talbot's, and both essentially perform the same roles. We could have saved a lot of money, not to mention years, by just resigning Powe.

Jagr was the best player at the World Championship in May including a hat trick against the USA. He will be terrific on the power play and has won mulyiple cups. Some need to lighten up. Talbot is a very good pickup for depth. He is young and has great character and he also is great on faceoffs.

Prediction: Jagar will be injured in one the first five games, and be touch and go the rest of the season. He does not play with the fire and intensity he used to have and seems frustrated most of the time on the ice. That being said, he's still better than Versteeg on the ice.

Sign tomas fleischmann (if medical issues are cleared up) and simmonds, then hand us the cup in several months. Not sure we can get Gagne with this inflated market. Handzus is a good face off guy. Not sure what the flyers will do, tough inflated market for the flyers right now, they are cash strapped in a flowing market.

I wouldn't be suroprised if Jagr scored 25-30 goals and had 80 pts. He'd be good for 15 goals when he is 60. The writer left out that the KHL only plays a 50 game season and Jagr played in about 40.

Talbot is a good defensive player morons. He is a center morons. He is the type of player that can glue together a locker room that is broken. I swear some of you are complete and utter morons. There are some of you that clearly have a head on your shoulders and understand team sports but for the idiots that have no clue: They wanted Stamkos and couldnt do it. They signed Jagr as a stop gap, if he plays above what we think awesome. The Flyers are still good defensively, they have a bunch of young legs that wont tire at seasons end and they have a top notch goalie. Last year with Richards and Carter the GOALIES STUNK. I guarantee you the Flyers make the big splash next year. Spoiled brats, just wait until they do. Thats why the Sixers are screwed up. They didnt wait and they wasted those dollars on Brand. Go ahead, waste 18 mil over 4 years for Cole and get stuck. Or throw a contract at Jagr for one year, if he fails, theres 3.3 more mil to throw at a star next year. IDIOTS I swear.

The Washington Capitals traded the rights to restricted free agent goaltender Semyon Varlamov to the Colorado Avalanche for a first-round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft and second-round selection in either 2012 or 2013. I wonder, can the Flyer's get a first rounder for Bob?

Please it wasn't Richards and all night Carter for Jagr. You sound like a politician. We Received Schen(Great pick up), Voracek, Simmonds, Couturier(Great pickup) For Carter and Richards. They were then able to sign Bryz(great pick up). Nodl digned today and we got rid of $3.63 million with Versteeg. Calm down. Jagr as a second line and power play winger is enourmous. Especially with his cup experience.Yes we all wanted Leino. Did you read the news reports? He wasn't returning calls. So we make 4 great deals and a possible superb deal and I still hear the whining. By the way if it doesn't work these are short term contracts and you start from the goalie up. Homer gets an A+ for this off season and he isn't done.

Another thing I see here. So many of you want Gagne back. Yet you complain about missing games. If we would have picked him up he would have taken Carters spot in the press box as we were getting used to. We still may get him but not for $5 million. I suppose some passionate, nostalgioc types would love to see him in the press box for $5 mil but me, no way. maybe $2 mil.

We alll wanted Leino but maybe he didn't want to be here. He wasn't returning calls. Personally I don't know why anyone would pick Buffalo over any city in the league unless you have serious turrets. therefore less people with IQ's over 70 will notice, but it looks like he may not have wanted to be here. We also were, from the pres, starting at $1.75 mil. He got three times that.Leino over Jagr ye. But Homer still gets an A+.

@romus; You don't want to get rid of Bob now or in the next 2 to 3 years. One of his biggest problems was his poor masery of english. Bryz will not only speak Russian to him but mentor him. Then in two to three years you will ahve a great piece to move if you wish to. As for your question , maybe a first rounder but most likely a second rounder. His numbers and weaknesses were more apparent in the second half of the season. They can be corrected though.

Jagr is a CANCER. And Talbot was not even offered a contract in our great city. Ten goals in 2 years, not bad.LOL Maybe he can play on a line with his buddy, Carcillo

we still need to fill 3 roster spots with only 4.5 mill and if they sign Madden for about 1.3 that leaves only about 3.2 and that won't bring Gaggs;....unless he takes an extra year for less cash or a severely backloaded deal or deferred payments or something like that,....but it would be nice to see Madden and Gaggs both here to fill out the roster

Versteeg brought here for a number 1 5 months ago..........sent out for a number 2 today. Folks- this is the lunacy of Mr Snider. A lot like George but the difference is George learned- and when he finally handed the reins over to real baseball men - they spent his money better than he did and they won a bunch of rings. Ed - you have to get a real GM in here and let go..........16 & 17...........I love 'em both on the ice but not as your lackey's.

Everybody says they are building around their defense but can Pronger can stay on the ice to play 70+ G and a 36-year old Timonen actually not be spent by the time the playoffs roll around in April as he has been the past 2 years? I say 'no' on both accounts. Lilja is O'Donnell. Lateral move at best.

What's next bring back Eric Lindros?

    HOMER:

Terrible mistake signing old man Jagr!

    HOMER:

If you dont win the Cup next year you will join Booooby Clarke as the team's next Senior Vice President of "nothing ness", get ready to be demoted.

    PREDICTION:

The Flyers one day will sign Ron Hextall as their next GM.

He's done a wonderfull job rebuidling the L.A. Kings, raping our Flyers recently of good draft picks and players and the best part is:

He's an Ed Snyder kind of player.

This makes too much sense for it not to happen, and thus you heard it here first.

    HOMER MUST GO!

The only bad move anyone say was made was acquiring Jagr. All the others were good to great. Your whole theory collapses if Jagr gets 30 goals and 30 assists. With him playing less TOI , on the power play and possibly third line maybe second he will not be going against the biigest defenses. I also suppose JVR, Giroux, Brier, maybe Shenn, are slouches. The only thing that would have made this perfect is Leino. But he got almost 3 times what the Flyers were talking and he wasn't returning calls from all the press accounts. We weren't even given the oppurtunity to make an offer and we had room under the cap. That tells me he wanted this to happen.

La, Good move by Hextall? When were they in the cup last? They have Carter and Richards. In LA they have allot more hopping clubs. We all know those hung over faces on the bench. No your ankle and back injuries don't make your eyes red, give you stomach"flues" and give you that grey ashen look. I know, I've been there. They allot of growing up to do and we aren't going to wait 3 years for them to do it.

This going to br the most interesting and exciting to watch in years. The defenseman will be able to o up on the rush with Bryz in goal. We still have the top defensive corp arguable in the league now. If we need to tweak it we can and we still have draft picks. The Schenn, bryz and Coutourier pick up are all great. We now have locker room leadership and Stanley Cup winners in the locker room. We haqve so many facets to win games now and others that are emerging that we we have a team that will last well into the future. Homer Gdae A+> He isn't even done yet and expect a goal screr. Also Jager will not going against the best defensess. Giroux, JVR, Brier, etc will attract them, Jagr could be a b3rd line and power play leader. We had an anemic power play even with our top of the league team goals.

We need to sign/trade for someone who can bury the puck, a player like Ryder or Knuble (not that they're available)....but a player "like" them. I think Gagne is a good fit for that as there's not much of that type of player available

Season ticket holder since 1977. My feelings on where the Flyers are headed? They are not going to win the cup next year, but as always, they will be in the top five, which is pretty much where they are headed on most years.

Too bad Richards was a party animal, that got him traded, not to try and upgrade the team. He, along with Carter, put the chicks and boozing ahead of hockey and he had to go. Sadly.

The two new kids who play center have a couple of years ahead of them before they show signs of being comfortable. That leaves the Flyers at least one good scoring center short to make a run. The defense is getting older too and that isn't good. The big positive is that the team got a bit tougher which they needed to do.

Holmgren has to win a cup soon or he will be gone, but he just does not have a plan as to how to go about doing it: Through the draft, or by buying expensive older players. Most teams do it through the draft.

I'll bet a good NE Philly cheesesteak that Brayden Schenn will score at least 15 goals this year. I live din Philly for 35 years, then the past 21 in Vancouver and watch the Canadian Juniors all the time--this kid is better than both Richards and Carter early in their careers and might be the makeup "steal" that the Flyers get back when they traded Forsberg for Lindros back in the 90s. At least we can hope it will be :-)
