Flyers waive Michael Leighton, Tom Sestito

POSTED: Thursday, February 28, 2013, 12:39 PM

The Flyers have waived backup goalie Michael Leighton and forward Tom Sestito.

The Leighton decision seems to indicate that Brian Boucher will be the backup for the Flyers behind Ilya Bryzgalov.

If Leighton and Sestito are not claimed off waivers by noon tomorrow, the Flyers can send them to the Phantoms, their minor league team.

Leighton had played only one game for the Flyers this season, a 5-1 loss at Tampa Bay on Jan. 27.

Jody Shelley is also on injured reserve (and likely to remain there all season) allowing the Flyers to use his pro rated cap space of about $750,000.

Is Sestito really that bad? I'm just concerned we do not have a true fighter on the team, since Rinaldo has taken on an agitation role. Simmonds should not be relied on for fighting regularly.

McGinn, once he gets back from injury.

Didn't he just get his face broken during a fight? No thanks.

Why do we need to "have a true fighter" on the the team? Will that help the defense to defend, or the offense to score? Some of you are really stupid.

If you don't understand hockey - you really shouldn't post here. It's not the 70's - fighting is a much smaller part of the game, but it's still there.

Best news of the day. My only hope is that some other desperate team will be stupid enough to pick them up, so that they are out of the organization for good.

    hey anti-stepford...

is this your first year following hockey? your question shows a tremendous lack of understanding when it comes to the history of this game. fighters are required on every team to enforce the code. teams that don't have an enforcer find themselves on the receiving end of attacks on their star players. these attacks cannot be effectively stopped by the 2 min minors that the refs hand out. that's where the enforcer comes in. oh and your comment "some of you are really stupid" was awesomely ironic.

Ditto Truth, Olney, and especially Cappy. Anti = Rube. As Bugs Bunny would say, "What a Maroon!"
