Flyers trade Versteeg
Just when you though maybe, just maybe, the Flyers may be done making moves on Free Agent Friday, another one comes down.
This time, the Flyers dealt forward Kris Versteeg to Florida in exchange for a second and third round pick. The second round pick is Florida's choice, either 2012 or 2013.
This move reunites Versteeg with former Chicago general manager Dale Tallon, the man responsible for bringing him to the Blackhawks.
It's also an important move for the Flyers, as it clears Verteeg's $3.083 million contract off the books, which could enable more moves to come.
The Flyers received a decent return in Versteeg, who originally cost them a 1st and 3rd round pick from Toronto on Valentine's Day. When you consider that the Flyers' first round pick is usually at the end of the round, and the Panthers' second round pick is usually at the beginning of the round, it's not a bad swap.
Versteeg added 7 goals and 4 assists for the Flyers in 27 regular season games. He also chipped in with 6 points in 11 playoff contests.
Meanwhile, Ville Leino signed with Buffalo for six years and $27 million, according to TSN.

Dumped his salary and got the draft picks back, for the most part. Not bad considering how much of a dud he was last season.— General Turgidson- Lilja is one step back if you compare him to O'Donnell. Just look at his +/- stat. Carcillo is gone to the Hawks. Good luck to you, Dan! I like the Max Talbot signing very much, great character guy and a fearless player who will be Ian Laperriere's legitimate heir. Welcome, Maxime (or should I say "Bienvenue"?). - Buffalo will regret this overpriced contract. As much as I like Leino for his technical skill and his cleverness, he was basically a disappointment last year. I don't think he will last long after a few more 82-game seasons plus playoffs. Good luck anyway, Ville!— flyerdommo

- All in all, a productive day. Jagr's signing works for me on two levels -- first, based on what I saw at the Worlds, he can still deliver 60 or so points a season; second, you have to think that this is someone who can relate to fellow Czech Voracek and help him build his game. The Talbot signing is a bonus -- weaken the Pens by taking one of their key penalty killers, which is something the Flyers needed after M. Richards was shipped out. Plus, Talbot plays with a bit of an edge without going out of control, unlike Carcillo. Lilja I'm not so sure about. Versteeg? He didn't play in Philly the way he did in Chicago in their Cup run; hey, he didn't even play as well as he did in Toronto before the trade. Addition by subtraction for that one.
There's still one more move to make. Gagne (but only for a year at a discount)? Sean Bergenheim? Another D-man?— either orr - so no more carter, richards, leino, versteeg, carcillo, powe. am i missing anyone? team will look much different, but the additions are strong and with enough cap space to add more pieces either before or during the season.— turley

- Cap clearing !!!!!!!!!! Cap Clearing, Homer has a method to his madness, we need a gritty two way centerman, hmmmmmmmm..... Brad Richards! The Flyers had about 3 million left before this trade, now with Versteeg gone, Flyers have about 6 million, so maybe Richards comes to Philly and wears #18 and is the Captain! Hmmm, Christmas in July for all the Philly Flyer fans with the Richards 18 jersey.
That will surely make us top 3 cup contender. Jagr, Giroux, Briere, JVR, Voracek, Hartnell, Simmonds, Schenn, Talbot, Nodl, Betts, Shelley, and Richards. I like this team!

Comment removed.- Gagne is NOT worth getting right now. He just got done his worst season of career history while playing for a great team. The only sign of life he had was during the playoffs. He is past his prime and is completely useless to the flyers. The trades the Flyers made make sense. They are not near their cap and even having Jagr will not hurt them at 3.3 million. As you can see they did not play to keep Versteeg and Jagr will only be here for a year. The trade made sense. They're getting a solid player for a year to help them make a GOOD run at the cup. They have the talent and they cut the dead weight of Richards, Carter, & company.— syck

- I love Leino but at the price? Let Buffalo have him. Versteeg has tools but didn't seem to fit in the Philly offense. Flyers still have some money to play with to sign Gange. But what about backup goaltending? I see Boucher signed with Carolina Hurricanes - 2 yrs., $1.9m. Is Bobrovsky going to be happy playing 20-25 games and riding the pines for Bryzgalov. Flyers can't use Leighton becuase he's a cap hit outside the AHL unless Bob is traded.— phillyfandc

- if you could bring him in cheap, hes still fast and can kill pentalies. Remember he was one of our better PK players. might not knock 30+ goals anymore, but for like 1.5 mil i'd make him a 3rd line guy...
