Best father-son act in Philadelphia:
Joe and Marvis Frazier
Ruben Amaro Sr. and Jr.
Bill and Kevin Dineen
Joe Klecko (Temple) and his son Dan (Eagles)

Earlier in the week, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said it was important for the recently acquired Ilya Bryzgalov to spend some time with goalie coach Jeff Reese.

Consider their brief meeting Thursday a successful one.

Bryzgalov met with several members of the Flyers’ brass at their Voorhees practice facility _ including Reese _ as the goalie and his agent, Ritch Winter, began negotiations with Holmgren.

The Flyers acquired Bryzgalov’s rights from Phoenix last week, and are trying to reach a contract agreement before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

“I had a lot of fun with him,” Reese said. “He’s very intelligent and understands the game.”

   Reese chuckled.

“We would have no problem getting along” if he signed with the Flyers,” Reese added. “I enjoyed our time together.”

Bryzgalov, who turns 31 on Wednesday, and his agent will continue talking with Flyers executives on Friday and also tour the city. The goalie arrived in Philadelphia after flying from Russia to New York, where he boarded Ed Snider’s private jet.

Last season, Bryzgalov had a 2.48 goals-against average and .921 save percentage; he was the Vezina Trophy runnerup the previous year.

“I really like the way he plays, like the way he positions himself and uses his size to his advantage,” Reese said of the 6-foot-3 goaltender.

Winter will not reveal any details about negotiations. He emphasized recently that all media reports about the length and cost of the deal were conjecture.

Sources said the Flyers will sign Bryzgalov if his demands “aren’t crazy.”

A five-year deal that would pay him about $5.5 million per season seems like a reasonable guesstimate, based on an unofficial goalie scale.

Holmgren did not return calls on Thursday. Eight days ago, he hinted that the length of the deal would not be a stumbling block and that he was “open-minded.”

The Flyers already have nearly $59 million committed to 18 players for 2011-12. The salary cap is expected to climb from $59.4 million to about $62.4 million for next season, and it will be announced shortly.

If they sign Bryzgalov, the Flyers figure to bypass on resigning winger Ville Leino, a prospective free agent. They also may have to deal a player such as defenseman Matt Carle.

The Flyers do not want to trade high-scoring forward Jeff Carter unless they are overwhelmed by an offer, a source said, adding they would need more than what Columbus is reportedly dangling _ winger Jakub Voracek and a first-round pick (eighth overall) in next Friday’s draft.

If the Flyers cannot sign Bryzgalov, Evgeni Nabokov, who is property of the New York Islanders, may be a fallback option.

    Breakaways.

With Boston’s win on Wednesday, the Flyers have been eliminated in the playoffs by the last three Stanley Cup champions _ the Bruins this year, Chicago in 2010, and Pittsburgh in 2009…..According to Bodog.com, only three teams _ Vancouver (5 to 1), Boston (8 to 1) and Washington (17 to 2) _ have a better chance to win the Cup next season. The Flyers, Pittsburgh and San Jose are all at 9 to 1. Those odds, of course, will change if the Flyers sign Bryzgalov….Reese on goalie Sergei Bobrovsky: “He has a terrific future ahead of him.”

The Flyers met with him. How is that a step toward signing him. I love how the philly.com reporters completely ignore national reports that he wants to be paid as a TOP PLAYER which means a 6 million dollar per year salary at least. No chance the Flyers sign him without trading away a 40 goal scorer.

If the Flyers' recent history is any indication, they will iron out the terms of a contract then add a year or two at a reduced rate to reduce the annual cap hit, as they did with Pronger, Briere, and Timonen. Say what you want about the team, we all know this ownership will eat money to put the best possible product on the ice.

Yeah. The Flyers are going to whine and dine Bryz and then not sign him, especially after Mr Snider's public statement that he wants a premiere goalie. Homer will find a way to get it done.

1st round playoff exit for the Flyers and the Penguins will win the Stanley Cup without Crosby or Malkin.

40 goal scorer in who? Jeff "Erratic" Carter? Would you rather have JVR, Giroux, AND Bryzgalov? Or Mr Erratic himself and a 2nd tier goalie? The choice is obvious. A top goalie wins us the cup last year and who knows what would have changed this year in the playoffs against Beantown

Even with a top goalie there is no way the flyers win this years cup. They were swept by the team with the leagues best goalie and the Flyers would still have a terrible defense. @ 5.5 Bryn would be the 10th highest paid goalie in the league. Not sure who ur sources are Timmie but every tweet after the deal said Bryn wants to be paid as a top player, not just goalie. That means he wants at least 6 mil and 7 if he wants to be paid among top goalies.

No team is going to pay him 7 million, the only team that would is already paying Dipietro an absurd amount of money.

It isnt goalie alone- defense was way too soft without pronger. Carle got exposed when he had to be without pronger- flyers dont need to get too crazy with any moves just be smart with them

How about an incentive laden deal? The guy has great regular seasons, but up and down playoffs. Pay him more if he brings the cup back.

trade Carter for a playoff performer. especially after this finals, you can say that regular season performance means nothing unless you have the ability to take your game to that next level when it matters most. Carter, IMO, never has shown that. Nice guy though...

Jeff Carter on an off day plays at a level few others can hope to achieve on their best day, and most want to run him out of town. The problem isnt that Carter isn't perfect, its that we expect him to be. We can shed enough salary with fringe players and maybe 1 significant player (Carle) that we can easily sign Breezy and keep Carter, which should be an absolute must.
