Flyers sign Shayne Gostisbehere to multi-year extension

Capfriendly.com lists the contract as a six-year, $27 million deal.

Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who came on strong at the end of the season after a three-game benching, has signed a multi-year contract extension.

Gostisbehere was a restricted free agent, and general manager Ron Hextall wouldn't disclose details of the deal on Friday. But capfriendly.com lists it as a six-year, $27 million deal.

"It's a dream come true to be part of one of the best organizations in hockey," Gostisbehere said in a statement. "With everything that's going on here - we've got some young guys coming up and we've already got some key pieces - it's nice to know you're part of the future and part of the plans."

The 24-year-old Gostisbehere is part of a core of an impressive young defensemen in the Flyers organization and will likely be a focal point of the team's future.

"It's still important for us to get cost certainty," Hextall said about the new contract. "Shayne is a young defenseman with a very bright future who certainly fits in our vision moving forward, and we're excited having him under contract long-term."

After the 2015-16 season, Gostisbehere was second in the voting for the Calder Trophy, which is presented to the NHL rookie of the year, after recording 17 goals and 29 assists in 64 games. After the Flyers were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by Washington, he had surgery to his hip and groin.

For the first four months of the 2016-17 season, he was inconsistent and even benched for three games in the beginning of February. At that point, he had four goals, 17 assists and was minus-19 in 48 games. After that, he had three goals, 15 assists and was minus-2 in the final 28 games.

Hextall, preparing for the June 23 NHL draft, in which the Flyers have the No. 2 overall pick, said he had no update on the contract status of forward Jordan Weal, who is an unrestricted free agent. When asked if there was any progress on talks, Hextall said, "I have no idea. I haven't talked to his agent since the [NHL] combine. We have a lot going on here, and we have to see how it goes. I don't have a prediction or anything else for you."
