Flyers sign Mason; Briere getting closer

The Flyers announced they had signed goalie Steve Mason to a one-year, $1.5 million contract extension Monday.

After Monday's practice in Voorhees, Mason reiterated that he is focused on being the Flyers' No. 1 goalie next season.

In another development, Danny Briere practiced with the team for the first time since he suffered a concussion on March 23. Briere said if he keeps progressing, he is hopeful of returning Saturday in Buffalo.

Briere also said he wanted to avoid a seback like the one suffered by teammate Nick Grossmann.

Strange but true: The Flyers will take a 35-minute flight to Long Island. Their bus from the airport to the hotel will take almost as long (30 minutes).

Breakaways. Ilya Bryzgalov is expected to make his 23d straight start on Tuesday. The Flyers are 1-0-1 against the Isles this year, incluidng a 7-0 win at the Nassau Coliseum. The Isles are 13-8-3 since that loss....The Islanders have a five-point lead on the Flyers, who are in the middle of a stretch in which they play five of six games on the road....The Phantoms' Eric Wellwood is out for the year after undergoing right leg surgey.
