Flyers' scenarios tonight
Wednesday night’s lone Game 7 was a dramatic tease for the Flyers, who are salivating to learn their next opponent for the second round.
Washington’s surprising overtime road win, knocking off the defending Stanley Cup champs in Boston, gave the Flyers two valuable pieces of information:
1. Boston is no longer a possible opponent. (Duh)
-and-
2. The Flyers cannot face the New York Rangers in the second round, even if they beat the Senators in Game 7 on Thursday night.
After breathing a small sigh of relief, not having to face the team they've lost 8 straight games to over the last two seasons until at least the Conference Final, there are still vast possibilities.
Even with one out of three Game 7’s in the books, the Flyers can still face four different opponents in the second round – and the earliest they will know their fate is 11 o’clock on Thursday night.
Only one scenario, in Florida, would require the Flyers to open on the road over the weekend. Amazingly, the Flyers – as a No. 5 seed - would host any of the other three remaining teams.
Here are the scenarios to watch:
If NYR & FLA win – Flyers face Florida (5 vs. 3)
If NYR & NJD win – Flyers face New Jersey (5 vs. 6)
If OTT & FLA win – Flyers face Washington (5 vs. 7)
If OTT & NJD win – Flyers face Ottawa (5 vs. 8)
If both the Devils and Senators win, the Flyers would have home-ice advantage in each of the next two rounds.
For the record, if the two favorites (Rangers -170, Devils -120) are to win, the Flyers would face the Devils in the second round. New Jersey finally broke a five-game losing streak when facing elimination on Tuesday night. Florida is the home underdog for Game 7.
Here are the game times:
Ottawa at N.Y. Rangers – 7:00 p.m. – Madison Square Garden – NBC Sports Network
New Jersey at Florida – 8:30 p.m. – Bank Atlantic Center – NHL Network, joined in-progress on NBC Sports Nework

quote of the day from RGIII, "don't dream the dream, live it. This is for you kids out there." Let's go Flyers..Forecheck, Forecheck Forecheck! Dumb the torpedos! Play smart for the kids and no retaliation penalties~ I,d like to be under the sea in an octopusses garden, in the spring. AerielPhenom

I hope it's the Caps so Couturier can shut down Ovechkin. ej610
You guys are being knock-kneed. As long as we play the way we did in the last series (albeit a little more defensively) it doesn't matter who we play. From the Rump Rangers on down, we have nothing to fear. I'm not bragging or over estimating either. Fly guys are playing like Hell on skates, and as long as they do that, we will beat anyone. I say the tougher the opponent the harder they fall.
They need to sweat playing us. WestonF01
Caps remind me of the Flyers from 2010...they are very dangerous...and a matchup against NJ, FLA or OTT would be our best case scenario. otown philly fan
Home ice for the next two rounds sounds pretty amazing. But when, if ever, have the top four seeds from a conference all been knocked out in the same year? Crazy playoffs so far. jklinger- 2 years ago.
Penfold18 - False. 2 years ago (2010) the #4 Penguins beat the #5 Senators in the first round, while seeds 1,2, and 3 lost (Unless the question was meant to say "has there ever been a year where a top 4 seed in a conference hasn't made it to the Cup Finals? Then you are right).

Thanks Caps is right. I didn't want to see the Rangers in the second round. I'll be hoping Ottawa can pull it off but........I got a feelin' those stinkin' Rangers are winning tonight. Flimbis
the caps played absolutely smothering team defense last night. if their goalie doesn't give up a few gigantic rebounds, they easily shut out the bruins. i even saw ovechkin backchecking properly, as well as semin and backstrom. they look well coached, focused, and dangerous. my only hope is that the rookie goalie wilts under pressure. he showed some signs of it in the 2nd period last night. tockeyhockey
IM WITH YOU RBecker.. you best believe LAVY is working those guys over on the defensive side... Bryz feeds off good defensive help and from the looks of game 6, I think the team finally understands that they must block more shots to be a complete team.. but on the other hand, we just finished playing one of highest scoring teams in NHL.. With the acception of the Blues there is no other offensively prolific team in the playoffs. Im not afraid to play the Rangers because they are going to face a much different young team than before. I truely believe this team can go all the way this year if they stay focused on the defensive side!! nixman101- I want the Devils and Rangers to win. That way we can beat the Devils in round 2, the Rangers in round 3 and then the LA Kings in the finals. Wouldn't that be a dream sequence!
I'm liking Crazy Otto!!!! bigdaddyG
what's up with all these wishy washy comments? bring on any team. right now, the flyers are the best team in the playoffs. no fear. rbecker1963- Go Ottawa. Go Florida.
Thanks Frank!
Yes, that's right. The "Thanks Frank" get the exclamation point and NOT the "Go (either team)". LOL!
Flyers can play with anyone. The Caps could be tough with their focus on defense but can be beat. Bryz needs to improve his play and do it consistently or may not matter who we play. Ed Cornpropst
We're still in it, we'll take who we get and love it! Just sayin'... DJ
MDbirdsfan89 - what about a Flyers vs Kings Cup Final against our old buddies Carter and Richards and Justin Williams and Gagne??? macd41144
Nice work Frank! Fabulous
Well I did have NYR vs NYJ and PHI vs BOS in my second round bracket, guess we'll start over now. I'll take any of the scenarios at this point now. I'm still hoping for a Flyers vs Blues Stanley Cup Final vs our old buddy Hitch. MDbirdsfan89
So VERY glad to see that Tim Thomas no longer has to worry about a trip to the White House this year. former Mt.Airy Kid
Be careful what you ask for. Before the playoffs started, pitt was the cup favorite and even ranger fans were rooting for Philly. Before last night, those same ranger fans did not want to face Philly in the 2nd round. If ottawa can beat the rangers, whose to say they can't beat Philly? I will take whatever comes the Flyers way. P Even
Like I was saying there us no way we would face NY Rangers in 2nd. Go Ott and go Florida.
Nitroglycerin
I think scenarios #1 and #2 are best for us, despite the seedings. Give us FLA (Flyers in 4) or NJD (Flyers in 5) and let Caps and NYR pound each other for another 7 games. 1980
This is going to be easy....Nj or Panthers....welcome to the Eastern Conference finals vs Rangers flyers1000
Go sens. Go nj. fman727
I would love to see the Rangers out but I think the Sens could give the Flyers a little trouble if they had to face them. ericg610
My apologies for the coarse language in the story that follows: I was at The Rock for the 5-2 Flyers win, can't remember if it was Feb or March, but so many Flyers and Devils fans chanting pretty much good-naturedly at each other about the other team's talent level and the other teams goalie's talent level. Finally one of the Devils jersey clad fans stood up at a quiet spot before a faceoff and screamed: "The Rangers suck!" and the whole place roared approval as one! RI_Flyrs_Guy
My favorite teams: the Flyers and whoever beat the Rangers last. Go Sens! RI_Flyrs_Guy
Go Senators! Penfold18- Hate the Rangers and I'm glad the Flyers don't have to play them no matter what next round, and if the Sens knock them out I'll be ecstatic...but I would hate to have to play the Caps or the Sens next round either. I honestly think with their new goalie, the Caps are the most dangerous team left(even though the Flyers are very dangerous too) and would any of you want to play a hot Sens team that not only would have done something the Flyers haven't done for a while, but they would have had to do it 4 times, and that is beat the Rangers. Let's not get a head of ourselves here...no matter how good the Flyers looked in round 1, we still have to remember Game 4 and the fact that we have a virtually nonexistent defense in the 1st period and the most streaky goalie I've ever seen
Philsfan2012 - I get what you are saying, but I will still take facing the Senators any day of the week. Remember when the Flyers played Montreal two years ago after Montreal had a string of upsets? Most didn't believe the Flyers would win. I will take my chances against the 8 seed.
Penfold18
Nice to see Boston out. Would really like to see Ottawa show NYR the door. Snap Crackle Propp
Thanks Caps! Curt21- Because of the way they lost Game 4 and the way the won Game 5, I had little doubt that they'd close the deal in Game 6. Now, I have little doubt that these cocky kids will show the world they're too smart to take anyone for granted because they already proved they were too dumb to know when they were supposed to lose.
I know the scribes wish they had thought of that one. It's not original. It's from waaaaaay back in the day, son.
