Flyers winger Scott Hartnell had  an elevated heart rate after the second period of the team's 3-1 win in Detroit on Friday and will see a cardiollogist Tuesday, GM Paul Holmgren said after Sunday's practice in Voorhees.

Hartnell's heart rate has since gone down, Holmgren said, but the Flyers did not want to take any chances.

The veteran winger will sit out Monday's exhibition against the Rangers as a precaution. He did not play in the third period on Friday.

According to righthealth.com, the heart may start beating faster for several reasons, including exercise and exertion, dehydration, stress, an anxiety or panic attack, fear, anger, blood-sugar fluctuation, excessive caffeine consumption, or as a reaction to or side effect of taking certain medications.

Holmgren and coach Peter Laviolette both used the word "scary" to describe what happened Friday.

Before Holmgren addressed the media, Hartnell had downplayed the reason he had missed practice on Sunday and never revealed the heart problem.

“Just a maintenance day, just a little sore," he said. "Soreness everywhere. First couple weeks of the season  everyone is having a tweaked muscle here and there and it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

The Flyers released veteran forwards Michael Nylander and Adam Mair from tryout contracts on Sunday, Holmgren announced.

Counting players placed on waivers and two injured prospects, the Flyers have 29 players left in camp. They figure to open the season with 22.

Because of injuries, Nylander never played any games in camp. Mair played one game.

The Flyers obviously want to take a longer look at young prospects like Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Matt Read, Zac Rinaldo and Tom Sestito, among others.

Briere, Giroux, Schenn, Talbot - no room down the middle. Who'd've thunk that, if you were told four months ago that both Richards AND Carter would be dealt in the offseason? Full steam ahead with the youth movement, and so far it's looking pretty good...

Any chance Matt Walker makes the team along with Sestito and Shelley and Bartulis are waived? Not sure how that would shake out with the salary cap.

I think I'd rather see Bartulis on the Flyers than Walker to be honest. Walker has bad knees and the short amount of time he's spent on the Flyers, I haven't been impressed at all. Bartulis is a young and developing d-man who can learn from the best in Timonen and Pronger, not to mention the others in an already solid defensive core.

Even with taking Lappy's salary off the cap once he goes on LTIR, the Flyers are just under the limit and wouldn't be able to afford Walker unless they dropped someone else.

Walker was hurt all last year and played hurt. His knees are fine now. Walker on a great team is a #5 shutdown defenseman. Bartulis on a great team is still a bubble D or #7 guy. The Cap aside, if Walker has a good camp he makes the team

Please sign Sestito and dump Shelley alongside the Schuylkill River somewhere.
