The Flyers prefaced Thursday night’s contest against Nashville with a minor league trade.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced that the team has dealt defenseman Kevin Marshall to Washington in exchange for winger Matthew Ford.

Ford, 27, has never played in an NHL game. The California native was drafted in the 8th round in 2004. Ford put up 10 goals and 18 assists in 39 games with Washington’s AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, this season. Ford collected 42 points last year in the AHL.

Ford is set to be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Marshall, 22, skated in 10 games with the Flyers this season after making his NHL debut on Nov. 21. In 32 games with the Phantoms, Marshall collected 5 points.

It’s an interesting move for the Flyers, who traded a smooth-skating, potential 5th or 6th defenseman for the big club in exchange for a winger who has yet to really turn heads.

Holmgren was not available for comment on Thursday night.

That's a real head scratcher... Thought Marshall looked good at times, definitely had a few things to learn but had potential

Oh my goodness....Homer was reading Bob Clarke's Book on NHL Trade Mastery and stop at the chapter titled 'Ellison/Sharp' and deliberated.

Don't understand this trade at all - liked Marshall in his brief appearances with the Flyers.

Holmgren uses a ouija board. That explains why he makes good and bad moves interchangeably -- trades as well as signings. Holmgren lacks the patience and discipline to be a top NHL GM but he is in the middle of the pack. The bad news is that being in the middle of the pack doesn't work for a team like the Flyers who are expected to contend each year. Poile in Nashville has it all over Holmgren.

The Flyers saved a few bucks. That's all there is to this deal.

this is a pre lim to a bigger trade for someone who wants a young winger plus whatever we intend to trade. In Homer We Trust.

Or it could be the utter lack of up-front scoring on Adirondack. Ford becomes their second-leading scorer. It's an AHL move. Marshall was nice, but let's not pretend this was another Patrick Sharp move. Sharp was far more advanced than Marshall, and already an NHL regular.

Too many people are enamored with Phantom players. For the most part, Marshall looked horrible with his stint with the big club this year. You can say his age is the reason and it would just take time...bull, he did not seem to have the skill set. There is a big difference between showing the skill set and being too you and flat out looking and playing out of place. Marshall was the latter. There is a reason why Bourdon is still here and been playing ever since and Marshall is now with the Caps. All this was is an AHL/minor league trade. Happens all the time, means nothing. There is no way this can be compared to Patrick Sharp....and as with any team, some players are just not made for certain teams. You could look and play horribly for one team, get dealt, and turn out an all star with another. Sometimes its C-H-E-M-I-S-T-R-Y...

Sharp burst out with 20 goals at 25 with the Blackhawks in '06...lets see where Marshall is in 2 years...plus being a d-man it takes a little longer to develop. Trade makes no sense because of the age difference...Marshall could have been packaged in a later deal at the deadline.

Questionable deal since Marshall has shown flashes of stay-at-home potential and is young. However, I don't think he'll turn into the next Rod Langway, so we shouldn't lose too much sleep over this deal.
