PITTSBURGH _ With their second-round draft pick (45th overall) on Saturday, the Flyers selected 6-foot-5 goalie Anthony Stolarz, a Jackson, N.J., native who calls himself "Stolie the Goalie" on Twitter.
The pick was acquired from Columbus in Friday's deal for backup goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.
In 50 games in the NAHL last season, Stolarz had a 2.84 GAA and .920 save percentage. He was rated as the fourth-best North American goalie by Central Scouting.
Stolarz said he enjoyed watching Ilya Bryzgalov in HBO's 24/7.
“He’s a typical goalie," he said, smiling. "Goalies have been given the name of being a little loopy. But, I mean, I like to sound a little like that, too, but not as extreme and talk about the universe. He seems like a great guy and obviously he knows his stuff in goaltending; he’s playing in the NHL.”
Stolarz, who models his play after Nashville's Pekka Rinne, will head to Nebraska-Omaha, where he has a full scholarship.
On Friday, the Flyers selected center Scott Laughton in the first round. Here were their picks during the two-day draft in Pittsburgh:
1. (20th overall) Scott Laughton C 6-0 177
2. (45) Anthony Stolarz G 6-5 210
3. (78) Shayne Gostisbehere D 5-11 160
4. (111) Fredrik Larsson D 6-3 172
