Flyers defenseman Erik Gustafsson has been busy during the offseason playing for his native Sweden in the IIHF’s World Championship.
Sweden took on undefeated Switzerland in the gold medal round on Sunday in Sweden. It was the Swiss team’s first time ever going to the gold medal game. Sweden, which has won gold eight times before, did not hold back as they routed the Swiss, 5-1.
Gustafsson was a huge help to his country's team, scoring the first goal for Sweden that tied the game early in the first period. Gustafsson’s goal led to key scoring opportunities for teammates Henrik Sedin, Simon Hjalmarsson and Loui Eriksson as Sweden went on to victory.
During the competition, Gustafsson only scored two points, his goal in their final game and an assist in an earlier game. Even though he did not find too much success on the scoreboard, he was still a valuable player to the team. Gustafsson was on the ice in all ten games during the tournament.
