Forward Eric Wellwood underwent successful surgery on Thursday in Philadelphia to repair the tendon and ligament damage sustained in his gruesome skate cut injury in Connecticut last weekend.

Wellwood, 23, played 4 games with the Flyers this season. He is expected to miss the next 9 months, according to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. That would mean Wellwood would likely be unable to start next season until Jan., 2014.

Holmgren told the Glens Falls (N.Y.) Post-Star that Wellwood’s second surgery required “a lot of work.” Wellwood’s Achilles tendon was 70 percent severed and three other tendons were “completely severed” when his right skate accidentally got caught behind his left leg.

Wellwood’s entry-level contract expires after this season.
