Flyers goalie Ray Emery will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn muscle in his lower abdominal wall, the team announced today.

General manager Paul Holmgren said Emery is expected to be out for about 6 weeks.

Dr. William Meyers, from Hahnemann University Hospital, will perform the surgery.

Emery, 27, has an 11-8-1 record with a 2.83 goals-against average and .901 save percentage in 21 appearances with the Flyers.

Brian Boucher will be in goal tonight when the Flyers play host to the New York Islanders. The Flyers recalled goaltender Johan Backlund from their AHL affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, to back up Boucher. Right wing David Laliberte also was called up from the Phantoms.

On CSNPhilly.com they said it was a lower body injury in the hip/groin area. Regardless, why do all of the Flyers go down with groin, hip, abdominal injuries? They should have fired the training staff not Stevens.

I thought he was hurt, but I think it's his leg, not his hand. I thought he went down awkwardly on one play against Washington, and he got up very slowly.

I sure hope this explains his lapses in net. I figured something was not right, he seemed hesitant on some plays. He looked so sharp earlier on, especially when the D was letting him down. Recently, the D has still been letting him down but he started giving up goals as well. Hope he gets better soon. We need him. I like Boosh, but he always seems to give up goals at the most inopportune time!!!

to all flyer fans out there that were basically saying that nobody cares about the sixers anymore in this city, i'm glad to point out that your flyers are once again the city's least favorite team. welcome back to the basement. and this is ONLY for the fans who commented on any sixers articles stating that nobody cares about them and basketball is dead in philly. you couldnt have been more wrong. with that being said, i hope that the fly guys turns it around under the new coach and that ya'll make a playoff run.

Marty Biron will be acquired by thursday. Dipietro is back, and marty is on a 1 year 1.4 million deal...he is the only starter they could afford right now

Phil - shouldnt you be posted about whitey on the racial attacks on asian kids pages? Emery doesnt seem to be working out, not that the entire team is up to par of late.

While Biron would be an upgrade to both Boucher and Emery combined, he'll probably bring them back to above average, but still not good enough to win a playoff series.

I hope Emery recovers without issues. In spite of some of the comments I've seen on this board from Flyers and/or Sens "fans", I think Ray Emery is a quality goal tender. He has been left hanging in the wind in far too many games and I hope Boucher gets better support from a defense that has underperformed on most nights. I also hope Mike Richards has the courage to surrender the "C" to Chris Pronger. Richards was given the job at far too early a stage in his career, and I sincerely think he will benefit from Pronger's leadership. This is a character-revealing stage the Flyers are passing through, and I trust that Paul Holmgren will begin the needed work of dropping a few "passengers" off at the next stop. This team needs to bring in a few of their AHL'ers and get rid of some total deadweight.

Well with the way the Flyers think out of the box, you can go dig out your Robert Esche and/or Roman Chechmanek jerseys out of the closet.
