Coburn has modified no-trade clause
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – With the Flyers’ players, coaches and staff enjoying one last day of fun and sun across the state in Naples, Fla., before resuming a regular practice schedule on Saturday, it’s a slow news day here in the Fort Lauderdale area. We’re not complaining.
But, we did want to provide you with a little nugget of information.
A league source has passed along the structure Braydon Coburn’s freshly minted, four-year contract extension to the Daily News.
Coburn, 26, will be the league's 35th highest paid defenseman when his new $18 million contract kicks in next season. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 prior to completing a new deal on Wednesday.
Coburn will soon enjoy a modified no-trade clause, since will be at the minimum age of 27 by the time the deal starts. A modified no-trade clause usually works by submitting a list of 10 or 12 eligible teams where a player would accept a trade.
It is structured as follows:
2012-13: $4,000,000
2013-14: $4,500,000, with additional $1.0M signing bonus
2014-15: $4,000,000, with additional $500K signing bonus
2015-16: $4,000,000
His total compensation is $18 million. Since the NHL’s formula for computing salary cap hits is simply dividing total compensation by term of contract, his salary cap hit will be $4.5 million per season.
Coburn, the longest tenured Flyer since his arrival in Feb. 2007, is one of five Flyers to be signed for the 2015-16 season, including Max Talbot (expires 2015-16), James van Riemsdyk (2017-18), Chris Pronger (2016-17), and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov (2019-20).

PRONGER HEALING: Despite missing six games because of a gruesome eye injury, Chris Pronger returned to the ice on Wednesday in Tampa Bay and played more minutes (25:22) than any other Flyer – giving him some well-earned pool time in Naples, Fla., yesterday.
Oh, yeah, he had a team-high ice time even though he spent 4 minutes in the penalty box.
“I just laid out by the pool,” Pronger said, describing the extent of his activities on Thursday. “You need to take time to relax and recuperate.”
Coach Peter Laviolette said he was pleased with Pronger’s play on Wednesday.
“I thought he played a strong game,” Laviolette said. “It was certainly nice to have him back. His presence, both in the room and on the ice, was nice. I thought his game was good. Defensively, I thought we played a pretty tight game.”
REMEMBERING PELLE: Finally, as we remember all veterans, members of the armed forces, and all of those who fight to keep our country free, let’s also remember the passing of former Flyers goaltender Pelle Lindbergh.
Lindbergh passed away at the age of 26 exactly 26 years ago today, on Nov. 11, 1985 after a horrific, drunk driving accident in Somerdale, N.J.
I caught up with Pelle’s fiancée, Kerstin Pietzsch-Somnell, last November and was fortunate for the chance to tell her story in this article.

Team is not good enough. 5NOT4
and a no-trade clause to boot, not liking this deal at all!! Njtod10
I disagree, Njtod10. Coburn is a solid defensive defenseman who is very fast and can move the puck. He's not a superstar but he's a great guy to have on the team. He would have made more than that as a free agent. Vituperator
I don't think anybody should be offered a no trade contract, I don't care how good they are. neddyflanders
Versteeg had a hat trick last night and leads FL w 8G (1 less than Giroux)...just reporting since hpilly writers never do...Not saying I liked him, but sometimed it takes traded players time...like Neal in pgh for instance. philly thug
Neddy: that's a simplistic analysis. It's a negotiable thing. Presumably there are times that you can get a player for less money if you include the clause. In some cases, given the existence of a salary cap, that may be a smart move by the team. Vituperator

Wow. A cap hit that approaches Prongers and surpasses Giroux and JVR for what is arguably a number four defenseman.
This compounds the cap problems, limits flexibility, and drives up the price Holmgren's other pending ufa (Carle) who is considered the more desirable player on the market.
I like Coburn, but a week ago he was playing on the third pairing, he still has a lot to prove, it would have made sense to sign him early if it had gotten the Flyers a discount by keeping him off the market and having his price driven up by the competing teams, ...but considering Ehrhoff who's considered a better player got 4.0 last summer, Holmgren has seems to have given the Flyers the worst of both worlds:
They pay market price or above (I believe it's about 500k above), add another NTC handicapped expensive contract to the mix, drive up the price of their other ufa defenseman, ...and due to the leagues contract "tagging" rule have an even more limited cap situation to deal with should they desire to extend either Carle, Jagr, or pending RFA Voracek.
The Flyers now have the leagues most expensive goaltending, and most expensive defense corp, and have almost 20 million locked up in 4 defenseman: Timonen @ 6.3M, Pronger @ 4.9M, Meszaros @ 4.0M and Coburn @ 4.5M, and will now most likely lose Carle, ...who would have been a much better value for that 4.5M andyd
Carle a better value than Coburn at $4m? Disagree. Coburn is the better player, Carle will be looking at around $3m in FA this offseason. sla6yer
Enough with the no trade clauses- modified or not. Kanayd
Ehrhoff may be more talented than Coburn but he is pretty awful defensively. Just look at his plus/minus stat. Moreover, at 29 years of age the German got a ten year contract, which is very front-loaded (10 million cap hit this season, 8 the next!). Nobody can tell if he has the longevity to play at the NHL level till he is almost 40. I doubt it since he is an offensive D-man. Giroux was an absolute steal and a hefty payrise is due once his contract expires. You can't compare their contracts. Coburn is more reliable than Carle, who very often looked lost when not paired with Pronger. At 27, a D-man is yet to enter his prime. The contract gives Coburn time to mature and to seek an even better contract in four years. If he doesn't live up to the challenge, the Flyers can reconsider then. But right now I'd say he is exactly worth what he gets. Don't forget the psychological side to it: He is a young father and wants to stay in Philly, maybe in four years he will only come up with a modest demand to stay in this city with his family. Besides I like him as a person. flyerdommo
The modification will come in handy...especially when Marshall, Lauridsen, Bourbon and Blidstrand will be pushing the envelope to play in the NHL. Romus
....ask and you shall receive...thanks Sam! philly thug
Would you all stop worrying about the NTC! First off, it is a modified NTC which means that Coburn has to provide a list of teams to which he would accept a trade. Coburn can be moved. Let us also not forget that hockey has the ultimate cap relief in that you can waive a player and send him to the minors if no one claims him. The bigger cap problems are the ones that give you nothing at all, like Shelley for $1.1 million. Gord Grimmier
