Carter agrees to 11-year extension

POSTED: Saturday, November 13, 2010, 3:52 PM

UPDATED

Jeff Carter has agreed to an 11-year contract extension with the Flyers worth $58 million.

The salary cap hit would be $5.27 million starting next season (his cap hit this season is $5 million). Carter could have become a restricted free agent July 1. The contract included a limited no-trade clause, although general manager Paul Holmgren would not specify when.

"He’s a committed player to the Flyers. A committed two-way player for the Flyers," Holmgren said before tonight's game. "You need guys that can score and Jeff has a knack to score and I look forward to seeing him score lots of goals over the next number of years.”

The contract was first reported by Canadian sports network, TSN.

The deal is the second-longest in franchise history next to the 12-year deal that captain Mike Richards signed and would likely keep both Carter and Richards as Flyers for the length of their careers.

"We’re happy to have Jeff signed for the foreseeable future," Holmgren said. "He’s an integral part of the core of our hockey team. This took a little bit of time to get done, but we’re happy to have it done.”

Holmgren said negotiations first began in the summer, but the deal took time to complete.

"Something always came up," Holmgren said. "It was never hostile at any point, it just took time to get done. I think some other issues in the league made us think about different ways of doing this, thinking about different ways - number of years, stuff like that, just custodial stuff. We finally came to an agreement late last night.”

Carter, 24, has eight goals and six assists in 16 games this season. He has 153 goals and 138 assists in 397 career regular-season games.

"I think it really says something about him as a player for this organization and what he has done," coach Peter Laviolette said. "Jeff has put up a lot of points. He's young and talented. He's a big guy that plays center ice for us. I always say you have to be strong down the middle and he certainly is that for us. It is a great deal for him, our organization and our fans. It seems to be a good fit."

Good move. Not overly impressed with Carter so far, but he's only 24 and has showed signs at times of being an elite player. The one thing that still bothers me though in Game 6 last year, we talk about Leighton giving up that really soft goal; but what about Carter's inability to lift the puck over a prone goalie into the open net in the OT.

I always have been a solid supporter of Carter, and this was a brilliant Homer move again. I loved Bobby Clarke the palyer, but not his style as a GM. We finally have some elite Russian players, casting aside decades of ignoring a country with great players. We have Bobrovsky who looks like the second coming of Pelle Lindbergh. He is ahead of Parent at this point in his rookie season. It took some lean years and a stint in the Leafs under Plante to make Parent the tops among all goalies. Giroux is playing better than cross-state hated rival Penqueens. The Flyers are a great product, and perennial contenders. Go Flyers!!

As for the Bobby Ryan for Carter talk, Carter has a lower cap hit than Ryan. And he's a better and more consistent player. Carter had 3 stretches last year of 4 or more games with out a goal. Ryan had 4. Carter had one fewer goals in less games. He's better defensively.

I like the signing. All the hates saying he sux in the playoffs... Let someone smash both your feet and see how well you perform at work... right, you won't be there cause you have broken feet...

Chin chin dsh129.....best comment so far. Carter's contributions aside, we all have to consider the economics of the NHL. This is a smart more by Homer and the Flyers have options if Carter's performance takes a dive. Low risk, high reward. Go Flyers!

BTW...I live in SoCal and we can dismiss any expectations of the Flyers prying Bobby Ryan away from the Ducks. He is their main draw and short of a total team collapse promting a desperation move, it ain't happening. Ryan is to the Ducks what Giroux is to the Flyers,

Carter is still a young man whose game will evolve. He is not the next Kolvachuk. I think a year with Lavy will make him an even better player. His cap hit is around 5.3 million. How many teams in this league would pay 5.3 million for 40 goals. Maybe with some more Lavy he will approach 50. Tim Kerr wasn't exactly known for his d.

carter is not my favorite player, but he is a decent 1. If he would ever pass....I mean ever pass.... he could be a really good player. When I am at the game and he has the puck....at any angle.... I know he will shoot.

I can't believe the idiocy I am seeing in these comments. 2nd liner on a really good team? Are you kidding me? This is a great signing with a manageable cap hit. People need to realize that when you have a team full of star players, they have to payed as such or they will leave. And then you would complain that we let them go.

This is a great move. Of course the 11 years is always eyebrow raising but owners are assuming that the cap will keep increasing given the trend and with the next increase to be between $3-4 Million. The only bad contract is Hartnell's $4+ Million hit, but he's almost out. This is a loaded Flyers team that is amazingly balanced and now with a goalie that definitely looks like he's legitimate. I'm really high on Bob. It's still possible Carter could be traded for Ryan but either way I think it's important to have a guy that has a knack for finding the net. Leino next...and I'd like O'Donnell back if possible, he's steady. Powe is important to resign too but flexibility...

ALl of the Carter haters are funny. He is your leading goal scorer Flyer fans! Ok, you think he should score grittier goals...you think he only scores meaningless goals..whatever. He still scores more goals than anyone else on the team. He is a star and he has star value. You wanna trade him for a magical Gretzky/Lemieux star...that doesn't happen in the salary cap world. This signing is incredible. Once Briere's contract is off the books, you will be very happy to have Carter locked up.

Why are you people so worried about locking up Ville Leino? He's not going to cost very much at all. Look at his production, at best he's looking at $1.5m a season, even that's a stretch.

Yet another multi-millionaire that will benefit from Bush's tax cuts for the rich, who don't pay their fair share. Republicans love tax cuts because it puts the squeeze on women and minorities, who are unable to get the social assistance they so desperately need because Bush and his cronies wanted to make sure their rich pals keep their money from those who sorely need a more fair and equitable social safety net.

whats wrong with controlling the rights of a young proven 40 goal scorer? this is good deal. there arent a lot of those around, in case you havent been paying attention, much less ones that are big. and, what is the indication that carter doesnt have heart? have you seen him practice?

i like that we can trade him if need be. just hope his salary doesn't effect the depth of the team. the problem i have with carter is he disappears in the clutch. i'd take briere over carter any day...i like carter as a second liner at best. i still think this is the most talented flyers team i have seen, what a mix, vets/young finesse/grit offence/defense now goal tending...GO FLYERS!

I know we all bashed on him last year but his talent is undeniable. We're better off with him than without.

The people complaining are the same idots that said signing Pronger was signing another Derian Hatcher - hahahahahaha. They don't know anything about hockey, they just watch when the team is good. First, they will still sign Leino. How? Zherdev and carcillo go, probably o'donnell along with Leighton and Boucher as well. Second, rumors are the cap may rise as much as 4 mill next year. Third, you people saying Bob will want big $$$$ are clueless. He's 22 years old so will be a restricted free agent for years. Therefore he's not in a position to demand money, especially when still only 12 games into his career. Do some homework bandwagoners

Per TSN.com...."The contract breaks down as follows: Carter will earn $6 million next season then $6.25 in 2012-13 season, $6.5 in 2013-14 and $6.75 the year after that. He will then earn $7 million for two seasons before going back to $6.5 million for the 2016-17 season. He is set to earn $5 million in 2017-18, $3 million in 2019-20 and $2 million a year in his final two seasons of the deal.

While Carter is not eligible for a 'no-trade' clause in his contract for the first year, he has a full 'no-trade' clause for years two through four. After that he has a modified clause for the remainder of the contract's duration"

Looks to me Homer did something right in protecting the team should Carter have a Ryan Howard-like post-contract letdown. He can be traded up until the start of the 2012 season.

Obviously Carter is not a fan favorite on this board, but he does put the puck in the net. He needs to be more consistent in the playoffs without question, but there are not too many guys out there that have his offensive ability. The trouble with a lot of Flyers fans is they only want players like Richards. We need guys like Briere and Carter to light the lamp.

Love the flyers. Hate this contract. I've come to dislike this player due to his lackadaisical, uninspired play and his tendency to disappear in the playoffs especially. Predictably, his game is almost always a wristshot from the wing. Defense reads him easily. He's a punk on the ice, even with Carolina, an aberation.

Finally a smart Flyers fan! Thank you JSaQ. It only upped our cap hit by 270k....it's an excellent move and a great signing. Carter is an important piece of this team. He's 40-50 goals per year when he's healthy. All you haters go root for the Leafs.....they have no hope, no draft picks and no cap room. Homer is looking smarter and smarter every year.

The sheer stupidity of some "fans" on here is worth a chuckle. My friends who are fans of other teams know what a good signing this was, and they have let me know that they're upset they won't get a crack at Carter in free agency or via a trade. Very good move by Holmgren. Carter locked up and only $270K more against the cap.

He is one of the least physical 6 foot players in Flyers History. Meaningless regular season goals mean nothing. He needs to play bigger, tougher, and better 2-way hockey in the playoffs. He looks shocked when he gets hit in the playoffs...He needs to play a bigger, more fisty game, and score goals in the playoffs..and play defensive...

    Frank,
You wrote: "The deal would be the second-longest in franchise history next to the 12-year deal that captain Mike Richards signed..." As players Bobby Clarke and Bernie Parent were both signed to "life time" contracts. You may be correct. I'm still not sure what "life time" contracts are, especially since Clarke left the organization twice, after his playing career, to take GM positions with other teams.

This is dumb. 20% of the cap is committed to two guys (Richards and Carter) who are probably excellent second line guys on a very good team. So now, much like the Gagne situation, Homes has backed himself into a corner and will have to trade JVR for .20 on the dollar. Can someone get us a GM who looks before he leaps?

There's a lot of tough love in Philly! I myself have always been a Carter fan and I think it's nice to know that we'll have a 50 goal scorer soon. People can bash him and Ritchie all they want but I once read a former coach of theirs say that they won championships at every level and he is convinced they will do it in Philly. Be greatful they are on our side!

I still think he will be traded eventually. Being locked up for 11 years at a reasonable cap number only makes him more appealing to smaller market teams.
Also, Ville Leino and Bobs will both also be signed, you have to take into consideration that Kimmo Timmonen's 6+ mil cap hit probably will not be around much longer past this season.

too long. 6 years would have been better we have no money for Leino now. Plus, Bob may want big $$$ and Giroux's contract will only go up after he is done. Better hope the NHL shells out big money so the salary cap goes substantially up!

Wow, this is bold. The guy's a proven goal-scorer, but his heart and work ethic are questionable. I hope this works out for the Flyers because when he's on top of his game, he can be lethal. When he's not, he's invisible.
