Carter agrees to 11-year extension
UPDATED
Jeff Carter has agreed to an 11-year contract extension with the Flyers worth $58 million.
The salary cap hit would be $5.27 million starting next season (his cap hit this season is $5 million). Carter could have become a restricted free agent July 1. The contract included a limited no-trade clause, although general manager Paul Holmgren would not specify when.
"He’s a committed player to the Flyers. A committed two-way player for the Flyers," Holmgren said before tonight's game. "You need guys that can score and Jeff has a knack to score and I look forward to seeing him score lots of goals over the next number of years.”
The contract was first reported by Canadian sports network, TSN.
The deal is the second-longest in franchise history next to the 12-year deal that captain Mike Richards signed and would likely keep both Carter and Richards as Flyers for the length of their careers.
"We’re happy to have Jeff signed for the foreseeable future," Holmgren said. "He’s an integral part of the core of our hockey team. This took a little bit of time to get done, but we’re happy to have it done.”
Holmgren said negotiations first began in the summer, but the deal took time to complete.
"Something always came up," Holmgren said. "It was never hostile at any point, it just took time to get done. I think some other issues in the league made us think about different ways of doing this, thinking about different ways - number of years, stuff like that, just custodial stuff. We finally came to an agreement late last night.”
Carter, 24, has eight goals and six assists in 16 games this season. He has 153 goals and 138 assists in 397 career regular-season games.
"I think it really says something about him as a player for this organization and what he has done," coach Peter Laviolette said. "Jeff has put up a lot of points. He's young and talented. He's a big guy that plays center ice for us. I always say you have to be strong down the middle and he certainly is that for us. It is a great deal for him, our organization and our fans. It seems to be a good fit."
Frank,
You wrote: "The deal would be the second-longest in franchise history next to the 12-year deal that captain Mike Richards signed..." As players Bobby Clarke and Bernie Parent were both signed to "life time" contracts. You may be correct. I'm still not sure what "life time" contracts are, especially since Clarke left the organization twice, after his playing career, to take GM positions with other teams.

Now that is not a good move. Total disappearing act every year in the playoffs. Joey- No way another team is taking on that contract commitment. He's here to stay. ant8817
Rather Optimistic of the Flyers -
I just hope there is still an NHL 11 years from now. phillydude
Steveo - Richards and Carter are excellent second line guys on a very good team - OURS! playboy
He is one of the least physical 6 foot players in Flyers History. Meaningless regular season goals mean nothing. He needs to play bigger, tougher, and better 2-way hockey in the playoffs. He looks shocked when he gets hit in the playoffs...He needs to play a bigger, more fisty game, and score goals in the playoffs..and play defensive... michaeldhockeyguy
Gives the a center after Briere leaves. Not a huge fan of Jeff's work, but he is a scorer. HandNik
The sheer stupidity of some "fans" on here is worth a chuckle. My friends who are fans of other teams know what a good signing this was, and they have let me know that they're upset they won't get a crack at Carter in free agency or via a trade. Very good move by Holmgren. Carter locked up and only $270K more against the cap. JSaq

Finally a smart Flyers fan! Thank you JSaQ. It only upped our cap hit by 270k....it's an excellent move and a great signing. Carter is an important piece of this team. He's 40-50 goals per year when he's healthy. All you haters go root for the Leafs.....they have no hope, no draft picks and no cap room. Homer is looking smarter and smarter every year. PhillySteve5
I love it. Great job Flyers. Jiggs_5

Ummm...I think I'd be ok with 5-6 years...these contract lengths in hockey are insane! Philly Fan in Kuwait
Love the flyers. Hate this contract. I've come to dislike this player due to his lackadaisical, uninspired play and his tendency to disappear in the playoffs especially. Predictably, his game is almost always a wristshot from the wing. Defense reads him easily. He's a punk on the ice, even with Carolina, an aberation. Yodude2
Lock the young ones up.....good idea. beefbr
