Flyers among all-star leaders; Carcillo returns to practice

POSTED: Monday, November 29, 2010, 12:06 PM

Despite not being on the all-star ballot, goalie Sergei Bobrovsky and center Claude Giroux continue to get strong support as write-in candidates.

In voting results released Monday night, Bobrovsky is second among goalies, behind Montreal's Carey Price, while Giroux is ninth among forwards. Mike Richards is seventh.

Overall, the three leading write-in vote-getters are Price (145,726 votes), Bobrovsky (116,725) and Giroux (103,620).

If the voting ended today, the Flyers' Chris Pronger would be one of the two starting defensemen. Pronger is second, behind Chicago's Duncan Keith. Kimmo Timonen is the fifth-leading defenseman.

The all-star game is Jan. 30 in Raleigh, N.C.

Goalie Michael Leighton is making progress and could go on an AHL rehab assignment shortly. When he is healthy enough to play with the Flyers, the team will probbaly have to choose between him and Brian Boucher as Bobrovsky's backup.

As it stands now, the Flyers don't have enough cap space to carry three goalies, but they could get room if someone (Ian Laperriere?) is placed on the LTIR list.

Winger Dan Carcillo returned to practice Monday for the first time since he sprained his left knee against Ottawa on Nov. 15. The question is, when he is ready for game action, will there be room for him in the Flyers' lineup.

Since Carcillo has been sidelined, wingers Andreas Nodl, James van Riemsdyk and Nik Zherdev have picked up their games.

Richards and Giroux were given Monday off. The Flyers host Boston on Wednesday.

The man can skate, hit and play. So what he takes some penalties, it makes the games more fun to watch. You can't deny that. We went to the cup after getting in on the last day. Let me enjoy some fights in the regular season

The man (Carcillo) can also draw penalties. 2nd best record last season only behind Brown (I think). So why the hell would someone call him an idiot.

How about calling an idiot can't skate, can't really fight, takes bad penalties every other game Shelley. Freaking liability on the ice every freaking time.

First it was Downie, now it's Carcillo. The guy is a minus 17 for his career and had 200+ PIMS last year. You don't end up with those stats unless you're a defensively weak or undisciplined player. And last time I checked, Carcillo wasn't fighting Colton Orr or Boogard. Shelley was. Let's work on that first, before you quote Behind the Net's very questionable statistic "penalties drawn / taken." I don't hate Carcillo, but don't sweat the 4th line when you have Betts, Powe, Shelly and others.

Plus it seems every kid we bring up from the Phantoms does a decent job when there is an injury....the Wellwood kid comes to mind. Does Carcillo's game really warrant $1mill against the cap? Ask the Eagles about cap management...think they'd pay a special teamer more than the vet mininum? Its laughable to think they would.

Hey MichaelZoe...have you noticed that Downie is playing on the first line in Tampa with Stamkos?? Hes got 14 points in 20 games...not so bad.

I still don't understand Shelley. Carcillo does have some ability, seen him score some nice goals.

I have to admit that the Flyers have largely been playing flat since Car Bomb's injury. This guy is an instigating pest that seems to light a spark under this team - I'm glad he is ahead of the timetable to return.

To MichaelZoe: How about you check stats about Carcillo 1st. We do not need your "theories" that you check on espn.com where 200pim is bad...

I just feel the Flyers have outgrown the Carcillos and Shelleys of the hockey world. When no one was looking, the Flyers some how joined the modern era of hockey.
Tampering with this lineup now is just insane !!
    Leave well enough alone !!!

Carbomb used to play like an idiot, but after Lappy talked some sense into him, he's been playing in your face, smash mouth, DISCIPLINED hockey. I would love to have Carbomb wear a mic for a game!

MichaelZoe: Carcillo led the Flyers in +/- for most of the season last year. Who the hell cares what his +/- was before he came here? What have you done for me lately is what matters and Carcillo was a very productive player last year. This year, he has not looked as good-- but there can be no doubt that he is significantly better on his worst day than Shelley on his best. My only issue with Carcillo is the dives-- that should be reserved for Crosby & Co. and is not Flyer hockey.

Dives aren't Flyer hockey? Never heard of Bill Barber or Mark Recchi, have you?
