Bryzgalov has chip fracture

Ilya Bryzgalov was limping for a reason in the Flyers' locker room on Monday night.

And it wasn't because of the Flyers' crushing loss to Tampa Bay.

The Flyers announced on Tuesday afternoon that Bryzgalov has a chip fracture in his right foot. According to general manager Paul Holmgren, Bryzgalov is day-to-day.

Holmgren said the Flyers hope Bryzgalov is ready to return to practice on Friday and play this weekend.

"We don't think this is a serious injury," Holmgren said on a conference call with reporters.

At the very least, the Flyers said Bryzgalov, 31, will be unavailable for the Flyers' matchup in Toronto on Thursday night. As such, Sergei Bobrovsky will make just his second start since Feb. 12 at the Air Canada Centre.

Jason Bacashihua will be re-called from Adirondack to serve as Bobrovsky's backup.

Perhaps Bryzgalov's injury, if it is not serious, may not be such a bad thing if he is able to return to form before the regular season ends. He had started 19 of the Flyers' last 20 games - and with the Flyers likely locked into the East's 5th spot - was due a rest soon anyway.

The Flyers' hope, though, is that Bryzgalov's injury doesn't shake him out of his rhythm. He is 10-2-1 in the month of March with a .946 save percentage.

TIMONEN TO REST: Buried with the big injury news, the Flyers also announced that Kimmo Timonen will miss Thursday's game in Toronto as part of a planned maintenance schedule for his chronic lower-back issues.

Timonen, 36, collected his 400th career assist on Monday night. A closer inspection of the ice time reveals that Timonen did skate in a monster 3 minute and 5 second shift to end the game.

Timonen's 248-game ironman streak was snapped in Washington earlier in the month, as he went on to miss 5 games (from March 4-13) with the same injury.

The Flyers will re-call Marc-Andre Bourdon, who is finally healthy in his own right, to make the trip to Toronto. They will have seven defensemen on the trip, including Andreas Lilja, who is day-to-day with his own "upper-body" injury. If Lilja can play against Toronto, Holmgren said the Flyers will then decide to reassign either Erik Gustafsson or Bourdon back to Adirondack.
