Bryz is NHL's 1st star of week

Three games.

Three wins.

Two shutouts.

And one well-deserved honor.

Ilya Bryzgalov was named the NHL's first star of the week on Monday for his performances from March 5-11. For the week alone, Bryzgalov made three starts and allowed just 2 goals, stopping 97.9 percent (94-for-96) shots faced, while collecting a 0.65 goals against-average.

It is Bryzgalov's first honor of any kind as a Flyer.

Saturday night in Toronto may have been Bryzgalov's best start as a Flyer, since the players in front of him couldn't muster a goal and he single-handedly took the game to a shootout before Claude Giroux won captured the two points. It was his second straight shutout.

He shutout Southeast division-leading Florida on Thursday night and allowed just 2 goals against Detroit on Mark Howe Night on Tuesday.

"He's played well, and no one's skirted that," coach Peter Laviolette said on Sunday night in New Jersey. "We didn't play that well [on Saturday night] and he saved us."

In the bigger picture, Bryzgalov has won 5 straight starts. He got a rest on Sunday night in back-to-back games, but he will carry a shutout streak of 136:13 into Tuesday night's matchup with the Devils. He has allowed just 2 goals over his last 255:21 of action.

Overall, Bryzgalov is 8-2-1 with 3 shutouts and 1 no-decision in his last 12 starts. He has a .933 save percentage and a 1.95 goals against-average in those 12 contests.

New Jersey's Ilya Kovalchuk (5 G, 4 A) and St. Louis' Jaroslav Halak (3-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .962 save percentage) were the second and third stars, respectively.
