Briere: "He was trying to hurt me"

POSTED: Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 12:04 PM
"He was obviously trying to hurt me," said the Flyers' Danny Briere about Pittsburgh's Joe Vitale. (AP Photo / Jeff McIntosh)

Danny Briere said he would be the first to admit that Joe Vitale’s hit on Sunday in Pittsburgh, which sparked a near line brawl with just 1:03 left in a 6-3 game, was a clean hit.

But Briere certainly wasn’t willing to concede that Vitale’s intent was pure, searching for a hit that has ultimately ended his regular season prematurely.

Briere said on Tuesday morning that he believes Vitale was sent to the ice with the intent to injure. Peter Laviolette was fined $10,000 on Monday for his on-ice antics with Penguins assistant Tony Granato and his subsequent comments for coach Dan Bylsma, whom he called “gutless.”

“Look, everybody knows that (they) put the line that was on the ice, on the ice with a minute left in a game that was out of hand,” Briere said. “Everybody knows the intent, what the intent was. Was it a bad hit? No. It was a clean hit.

“But obviously, you knew what he was doing. He was obviously trying to hurt me. We all know that.”

Now, Briere said he “doesn’t have the option” of playing another game before the playoffs start. He is officially sidelined indefinitely with an upper-back contusion. He has undergone MRIs and all kinds of tests and is currently undergoing treatment for the injury.

We wrote more about Briere and Nick Grossmann's injuries, plus much more, in Tuesday's paper.

Briere said he is not sure when he will return to the lineup. There is never a good time for an injury, but Briere’s line with Wayne Simmonds and Brayden Schenn was one of the Flyers’ most potent recently. The trio had netted a combined 19 points in the last 5 games alone.

“I don’t know much at this point,” Briere said. “All I know is that my back is in spasms. They have some fancy words for it that I don’t understand. There is no timetable.

“I’d like to be ready for the playoffs, I just don’t know at this point.”

Briere said he likely saved himself from a concussion since he was able to quickly brace himself before Vitale drove his shoulder into him.

“I tried to take the hit,” Briere said. “It’s just one of those things sometimes that turns out bad. It was weird. I was sore right after but it wasn’t that bad, I thought I’d be fine. A couple hours later, that’s when it started seizing up on me.”

With a score to settle, Briere is now hoping he will get another crack at the Penguins.

“There’s not much else to say or do,” Briere said. “I guess it just makes for a more entertaining series coming up if we face them in the first round.”

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS: With any overtime action in Tuesday's matchup with the Rangers, the Flyers will clinch a matchup with the Penguins. Home ice can still be flip-flopped in the final week. But one point won by New York or lost by Pittsburgh will clinch the No. 1 seed for the Rangers. One point won by the Flyers would lock the Devils into the 6th spot.

The Pens have a long history of deliberately inuring opponents:

Matt Cooke cheakshots Marc Savard, sending him to the hospital: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-I5m4f0ZXA

Brooks Orpik hits Erik Cole from behind, breaking his neck:

Obviously Cooke has some indefensible acts under his belt. But I could go to youtube and find a ton of dirty Flyers hits over the years, as well as any other NHL team. But if the Pens are the dirtier team right now, why do Flyers have by far more penalties, both major and minor? And why is your best team ever (ancient history, HA!) known as the 'Bullies'???

The Flyers have a lot of penalties, but not the kind that deliberately injure opposing players. For you to say: "Cooke has some indefensible acts under his belt" has to be the understatement of the year.

Umm okay buddy. I wont resort to name-calling, but a reasonable argument instead. First of all- if you play a more physical style, which translates to more penalties, how do you have less hits then the Pens this year (yet lead league in major penalties and PIM overall)? And about the 'cheap-type' of dirty hits- you can probably find examples from any team, but this really was easy for the Flyers, thanks for the layup.

Here is a flying elbow from Danny "he tried to hurt me" Briere:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytoQr21PCCc

Richards from last yrs playoffs, knocked out Tim Connelly for 6 wks:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SHMEVwHuG4

Jody Shelly, suspended 5 pre and 5 reg season games for this preseason hit. This one is disgusting:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js1MyNjOwg0

Jones horrible hit on Bergeron from behind, ended his season in 07:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeWFsKPNw9Q&feature=fvwrel

And it's funny that you mention the "Bullies" name wasn't self-proclaimed. Is that supposed to be a favorable argument for your franchise?

On the Richards hit Connolley turned at the last minute and the video with Jones was not a "horrible" hit.
Both guys were racing for the puck and Bergeron stopped short. It was not deliberate, unlike Cooke: His knee-on-knee check on Alex Ovechkin and brutal hit from behind on Fedor Tyutin further cemented his status as the league’s preeminent cheap-shot artist. That is added to last year’s unpunished viscous blindside head shot on Marc Savard and previous suspensions for head shots on Scott Walker and Artem Anisimov, plus a two-game ban for spearing in 2004.

So what about Shelly or Danny "he tried to hurt me" Briere's elbow? Nothing? And say what you want about Cooke's history, but you have to admit he has made a very conscious effort in changing his game this year. And you have nothing to respond to the rest of what I said, about how you have less hits but far more major and minor penalties than the Pens? You have the most penalties for and against your team- bating teams into ugly games is Philly's style- that is not debatable. You also gave Pronger a huge deal, who was known at the time as one of the dirtiest players in the NHL.

Um Ok "BUDDY" check your facts you dope !! typical penqueen uninformed fan. The flyers have the most minutes (1252) and PIM per game (15.8)not majors !!! While they are up there, they have 54 majors. Ottawa 55, Boston and NY BOTH with 63. In this part of PA 63 and 55 are BOTH Larger then 54. But then agian I didnt get eduacated in Pissburgh like you.... You Dope !!!!

Plus, as we all noted on Saturday, Crosby and Malkin don't get lots of penalties called on them. Other teams with other players, like the Flyers, don't have that luxury.

Really, the Flyers don't get the "cheap type" of penalties like boarding??? Didn't Schenn just get penalized in the game against the Rangers for boarding? Didn't Schenn get penalized for that late hit on Crosby but had it wiped out because of the Pens goal? And that was just the last two games. Just a couple games ago, Rinaldo got a cross check and a 10min misconduct penalty. You also have one of the dirties players in the League in Hartnell. You've got no room to talk with how dirty your team plays

The Cooke hit was legal at the time..that is why he didn't get in trouble for it. But if you want to look at Youtube videos of cheat shots, I have no doubts you will find more from Flyers than just about any other team!

And although it wasn't a vicious hit, that was a nice cheap shot by Schenn on Crosby some 20 seconds after the whistle. But you being a Flyers fan, I guess that hit was ok????

I'm sure you will be the one crying when 87 suffers his career ending concussion over the next 2 weeks at the hands of the Flyers. You can thank Bylsma for inviting this trouble with his antics on Sunday...you think a coach with an often-concussed star would be smarter than that...what a dope.

You're a moron, Bylsma inviting trouble? It's hockey there fella. as long as there is time on the clock you best be playing, if your not then you get hurt (Briere should know by now to skate with his head up). I'm sure Pronger appreciates the light heartedness of the Philly attitude on concussions. I really hope you guys do retalliate, shorten your bench for the 1st round, cause you know the game is gonna be under a microscope

Crysby and the Penqueens would like to think they wear halos, but just the opposite is true. They like to dish it out, but cry like little babies with diaper rash when the other team fights back! Cindy Crysby and Genny Munchkin will be bawling in their baby bottles after an early exit from the playoffs courtesy of the Flyers.

Next time just dump the puck. Got to admit Pittsburgh played it out perfectly. Yes there was no need for Vitale's hit in the last min of the game but this is a contact sport. Protect yourself at all times.

Hopefully we will get them next time. Get Well Briere.

Flyers fans- educate yourself. In 2000, game 2 of the Pens-Flyers playoff series, pens had the game put away and were going up 2-0. The flyers did all sorts of s#@# at the end of the game, getting tons of penalties, to make a statement at the end (check youtube). They went on to win that series 4-2. So don't be such massive hypocrites

You call that a run? check the tape. Vitale took about 2 steps. And you fail to address what I said earlier- If Philly 'plays a more physical game' resulting in more penalties, why do the Penguins have more hits than you?? Enlighten me; I am sure I am missing something.

Vitale hit the player who was coming thru center ice with the puck and his head down. It could have been the biggest player in the League and Vitale would have tried to do the same thing. Next time, maybe Briere will skate with his head up!

Any intelligent fan of the game that saw that particular game would agree. It was a clean hit, but there was definite intent to injure. It was only because Briere put his head up and braced for the hit, as he himself said, that he wasn't delivered a concussion. Things like this have no place in a professional sport. I don't care who delivered the hit. I wouldn't care if it had been Shelley for the Flyers. It's just not called for in today's game. It's a much faster game than it was, even ten years ago. Plays like that can end someone's career. That's never good, no matter who the player is getting hit.

Best to Briere for a speedy recovery!

I am willing to bet that most "intelligent fans" you speak of would argue that Schenn's cheap cross-check on Sid's back has less of a place in the game of hockey than Vitale's clean, legal hit as a response. By the way, which team has the most penalty minutes? I cannot remember.

Schenn barely tapped Crosby, he was sending a message for Cindy to stop slashing Flyer players. Crosby slashed Giroux across the hands in the first period, then Crosby slashed Vorachek after he scored in the second period and slashed Jagr in the third. All three slashes could easily have broken a hand or a wrist...which was Crosby's intention.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 12:49 PM, 04/03/2012
If Vitale had no intent to injure he wouldn't have followed through with his elbow, which missed because Briere did have his head up. And your Crosby took a dive. That was the softest crosscheck I've ever seen that knocked a player to the ice. your Crosby is the only player I've seen in recent years who is apparently allowed to slash players in the knees without any repercussions. But in the end, I blame my Flyers. The Flyers I grew up with would have put Crosby back in the hospital about two months ago.

The so-called cheap shot to Crosby by Schenn was nothing of the sort. Crosby flopped, as he normally does, trying to draw the call. Evidence? You take a cheap shot to the back in a competitive game and you're immediate reaction is to see who delivered the hit. Crosby? He looks to the ref first.

That's right. The guy who might be the strongest on his skates among all NHL'ers, yet goes down like.. well... you know... looks first to the ref after Schenn gives him a half hearted cross check between the shoulder blades.

Don't put Danny on the ice for an empty netter in a game that's already locked up. The game is over, why would the Pens have any of there three scoring lines on the ice? Why would you expect a young guy looking to make a name for himself to stop playing with a minute left. It's hockey Danny and Lavy get over it.

The thing on that hit that clearly stands out to me is that Joe Vitale clearly extends his elbow and aims for the head. Briere was able to avoid the head hit. Since the NHL isn't going to protect us it should now be our goal to hit Crosby in the same fashion and take him out of the series.

If Crosby had substained the same injury from Shenn's crosscheck, imagine the outcry around the NHL calling for a lifetime suspension. Since it was a Flyer who got injured, it's no big deal. I want to see Jody Shelly cheap shot Crosby, Malkin, or Letang this Saturday. I wish Sestito was available as well. He would have no problem trying to injure someone. GO FLYERS!!!!

Penguins_Playoff_Chokers- that name is so funny for many many reasons. Did you just tune into hockey this past year? Or did you huff glue or something to forget 08 and 09.. trounced TWICE by the Pens on your ice, en route to 2 cup finals and 1 win, just to fill you in.

you guys quit crying for crying out loud.. I didnt see a thing wrong with it.. Im a flyer fan to the core.. I wish our players hit like that every game.. If the flyers hit like I want them too.. We slaughter the Penguins.. How do you think we came back into that game. We started hitting them as hard as we could and we beat the pns into next week. they were scared.. But the flyers took the foot off the pedal and the Pens sent a message.. We lost this game but we are not scared.. Please stop cryingand enjoy the coming games.. If every game is like that one we are gonna have fun watching..

Guaranteed that if the Flyers go hunting, it will cost them time in the penalty box and maybe even missed games. They better make the plays clean for their own sake.

cor3yf...did you not watch the same game as i did. Crosby slashed Schenn just before Schenn gave it right back to him. Crosby then wouldn't face him...stand up play!!! Crosby gets away with everything and everyone knows it...including him. I will be the first person to admit that the guy has talent...that being said...i sure dont want him on my team...no one likes a cheap shot/bs artist. And seriously...did he really say that maybe Breire shouldn't have been out there in the final minute of play...He should probably watch what comes out of his mouth. I don't think he wants to have someone send a message why he might not want to be out there during ANY minute of play. One real good hit and his playing days could be over. There is no need to increase the size of the target on his back any more then it already is. Just my 2 cents!!! It's gonna be a great series!!!

People talk of Schenn's hit on Crosby but did anyone remember earlier in the game when Giroux's face was put into the ice by The Ugly Russian? Or when Cindy knocked the stick of of G's hands? And for both things I just mentioned, no penalties were called. Same with Schenn's incident, too.

Perhaps the problem lies in the vernacular "clean" to describe the hit. The hit was physically within the rules, but I consider it dirty due to the timing and the manner in which it was effectuated. It was akin to all the "clean" Scott Stevens famous karate shoulder with followup elbow hits that cold cocked a myriad of players, 7 actually in the playoffs of a two year period. One of those occurred like the hit on Briere in the closing momements of a decided game against a small forward (Shane Willis of Carolina) and might have been "clean" technically, but I easily could see a District Attorney with guts charging him with assault with intent to inflict serious bodily harm. There's a fine line that sports flirts with in regard to "legal" violence, but hits like Vitale's that totally disrespects a players welfare and the integrity of the league should probalby get the attention of law enforcment if Bettman continues to let it go. I have no doubt in Rinaldo did the same to Crosby in that situation, he'd've been suspended.

Additionally, Bylsma went head hunting because he didn't even know Cindy took a big flop from the Schenn cross check. Which is the whole reason Lavy was upset. He was telling the Pittsburgh bench that they made the decision to potentially knock someone out of the leauge when they couldn't even see it was a flop. Which is why they get the "Gutless" label.

Flyers top the league in power play opportunities but you're right they never get any calls and the league is out to get them. They also top the league in penalty minutes, but you're right they shouldn't have a target on their back game after game. Scott Hartnell has 134 penalty minutes Rinaldo and Simmonds are two other players who have more penalty minutes then any penguin but you're right the pens are a dirty team. Crosby admitted today that he may play dirty sometimes but I wouldn't expect any of you to get educated and read national news but cry when other team fans post on a newspaper's website. Get some facts and get back to me. Or just keep crying.

He may, huh? And does he get penalized when he plays dirty? If so, why wasn't he penalized Sunday? Maybe someone read Sidney a copy of the Hunger Games and he was just acting out, huh? I'm allowed to hurt people because I have a profile like Quick Draw McGraw and the league likes me. Face it, he was so bad Sunday even the network announcers eventually had to mention it. You know it and so does everyone who watched it that wasn't from Pits-berg. Nah, even you losers know it.

Thank goodness the Flyer coaches and players have more sense than some of the fans. The way to "make the Penguins pay" is not to goon it up and get suspended...instead, play fast, check hard, and send them to the golf course. While Shelley going after Sid would be momentarily satisfying, Crosby would just turtle and then the Flyers would be shorthanded. I'd MUCH rather see 2-3 more plays like the tic-tac-toe passing that led to Simmonds slam dunk. Beat them bloody on the scoreboard, not the ice.

I do love the Penguin fans posting on a Philly paper or blog and expecting "objectivity". Can't find the website for the Post-Gazette?

If somebody taped the end of the game, check this out: after the Flyer empty net goal the camera pans towards Bialsma and he is nodding "yes" to someone on the bench (not a coach; one or more of the players). I don't know if there is a cryptic reason why he did that, but don't usually the assistant coaches place people on the next shift? Was he nodding to that no talent "Dick" Vitale to stuff someone on the Flyer team? And if that team has to resort to Aaron Asham as your fighter, they're in deeper doo doo if they want to pick fights. Better off fighting a grade school team with him as your lead dog. Check uuut the video, ay?

To all the Pens fans...I sent an email to Dejan Kovacevic yesterday after reading his column in the Trib. He says in the article that Vitale's hit was a "textbook" hip check. How do you feel about that, boys? Never a mention of players leaving their feet to check anyone, no mention of sticks broken from repeated slashing, no mention of a knee-on-knee hit by Vitale on Grossman...nope, just a mention of a "textbook" hip check. Crosby gets hit from behind and what does he do? Does he act like a man and look around to see who hit him? No, he looks for the ref to see if they are still protecting him. That's what Laviolette was pissed about; despite playing 8 against 6 all day, Bylsma sent the goons out to let people know his feelings were hurt. By the way, it must suck to be a Pens fan today. After having countless penalties ignored by the officials, you still couldn't win. This is not about 40 years ago, this is about a league so heavily invested in Crosby that they ignore his crying and his cheap shots.

theuetmost, the national news saw the same game as all of us and yet the story for them is "Crosby getting up slowly" after being hit by Schenn. Really? Did he get up slowly? You know better than that and every Pens fan knows that your chances of beating the Flyers rest on whether or not the officials ignore the dirty play of a scared and overmatched Pens team.

The irony is that you are all probably the kids that got kicked around the schoolyard, and this tough talk is your method of compensation, and the fact that you are all so pathetic, is reflected in your having to post on a rival board to get some attention. The aforementioned troll got my attention, and after a year of unrelenting harassment, I finally embarrassed him off the boards. I won't have to do that with you keyboard warriors. You will all disappear, as so many others before you, when you lose. Must be a pretty bad day for coal dust to send so many of you pathetic, inarticulate, jealous slobs to our board. Just the facts boys....

What a whiner.....with, "He was trying to hurt me." Same for Laviolette who has been around long enough that he should have had enough sense not to put Briere on the ice with 32 seconds left and the Pens down an insurmountable 2 goals.

A whining Flyer.....from a team that has played dirty hockey with the best of them for almost 40 years. In fact, their style of play hasn't done much for them since 1975 as they have been Stanley Cup bridesmaids 6 times, including 2 sweeps and only a single 7-game effort that was 25 years ago.

Pittsburgh is 3-1 in Stanley Cups against the Flyers record of 2-6. We'd forget about the Steelers being 6-2 in the Superbowl vs. the Eagles 0-2 but you'd bring up the Phillies......2-5 vs. the Bucs with a 5-2 World Series record. OK, so the Bucs are horrible these days, but they've won more World Series in the last 51 years than the Phils.....Let's go Sixers! But where would they go?

    Just the facts boys....

    Penguins' most recent playoff performances:

2011 - Pens blow a 3-1 series lead over Tampa and choke out of the playoffs in the first round. The pathetic Pens were shut out in game 7.

2010 - Pens are eliminated by the number 8 seeded Canadiens in the last ever game at Melon Area.

The Pens continue their fine hockey tradition by going on to lose the first ever game at Consul Energy Center...to the Flyers. The Flyers continue to dominate the Pens in Pittsburgh, winning every game played there since Consul opened. The Flyers are 4-1 vs the flightless birds this year and 4-2 last year. The Flyers recently beat the Pens, breaking their eleven game winning streak and beat the Pens in 2010 when they had a twelve game winning streak.
FACTS: The Flyers have repeatedly beaten the Pens when they were playing their best hockey, the Flyers have humiliated the Pens for years in front of their own fans...But Pittsburgh fans still mouth off...incredible.

Guys if the Flyers are to retaliate, please please do it sensibly. The Flyers will always get the short end of the stick because of the "Bullies" name on the 70's. I'm soooo tired of hearing that over the last few years.
Should we go after Crosby and deliberately try to hurt him, absolutely not! But should he be fore-checked a lot? YES
Please I beg to just have a tight game and be aggressive and smart because you know for sure that the refs are going to call EVERYTHING on the Flyers if they sense we are going after Crosby. We want to win the game.

ha ha ha. Gotta love these Philthy fans and their angst towards the Pens. think about you fools, your team and city absolutely embrace the late 70's flyers that are the poster child for unfairness & bullying and stood for everything you are griping about right now! so so funny. As with the Eagles, big BIG BIG mouths with absolutely nothing to show for it. Always talk about what you are going to do and never about what youi have done. While the good folks on the other side of the state know what it takes to not only win a championship, but behave accordingly too. Philthy can only wish they did. I cannot wait until the Pens knock the Philthy Flyers out of the playoffs. I really cannot, and you know it is gonna happen. So chat while can. I also cannot wait until we put a Pens jersey on the Rocky statue, AGAIN! hat's right, AGAIN! Face it Philthy, you are a poor man's New York who best can identify with the Jersey Shore, and I ain't talking about the beach. Talking about the show and your that hot pia Snookie....ha ha ha. So funny. Knowing yinz will write things in response like Cindy Crosby, PenQueens, etc. The truth is the truth. You embrace tough guys if they are yours. If they are not, you cry foul. Jealousy is the best way to put it. Deny it if you must and you will, we have the championships and you have -- well, a (very) dirty city. Now don't get me wrong, I like Philthy, heck I went to Villanova! Go Cats Go! At least we can all agree that Villanova is a bright spot in this otherwise disgusting city. Quick question for all of you hockey fans, can anyone explain why & when Bill Clements changed the pronunciation of his name from 'Clements' to sound like 'Clay-mans'? Is that funny too or is it me? My best to Briere, hate seing a guy getting hurt on a clean hit.

Oh, yeah. We're jealous of the fact that the Pens won one game against us out of the five played. Last year they won two out of six. We're jealous of the fact that the Flyers have never lost a game at the Consul Energy Center...

We're jealous that we're 8-2-1 against the Penguins since Oct. 7, 2010. And you think you're going to beat us in the playoffs? LOL You've been breathing in too much coal dust...

orangerhymeswithrunts, whatever. Flyers are not dirty. We lead the league in penalty minutes but they are all clean hits or fights. Grow up and stop using the 70's "Bullies" as your excuse. I bet you never even watched a Flyers game in the 70's. Take a look at the Oilers and Flames games for cheap shots and fighting. Every team has their moments and every team has their goon player, yes even the Pens. Brier wasn't whinning and as you have read thought it was a clean hit, but they know how good he is in the playoffs (which we will probably meet the Pens) so with a minute left in the game he gets leveled. Imagine if that was Crosby or Malkin. You would be on the opposite end of the conversation so shut it.

I can't stand Cindy Crosby and his whining and diving - but in this case's he's absolutely right. Briere shouldn't have been on the ice in the last minute of a chippy game when you know the Pens are going to try to "send a message" after being outscored 6-2 and embarrassed again on home ice. This one's on Lavy. He should have been prepared to end the game with all big guys on the ice not 5 foot something and 150 lbs of Briere.

Laviolette is the idiot for putting Briere out there and a clean hit is a clean hit. The Flyers have lost their last 6 Stanley Cup finals on merit, not that you'd understand or admit it.

If the NHL insists on treating Crosby as if he is made of gold, then it would do them well to remember that the men who play hockey in this league just may grow tired of a b***h like Sidney being pampered and someone may lose their proverbial cool. Say a Marty McSorley moment or how about a Wayne Maki-Ted Green moment? If McCauley and Pochmara work another game, then the league is complicit in their incompetence and should be held liable for the results if someone gets hurt. If these two work another Flyers/Pens game, someone will get hurt for sure. You cannot watch the replay of Sunday's game and absolve these two from being either on the take or doing as they were told. But no one, repeat no one, is that blind. No one. Oh and btw girls, we may have the most PIM but Sunday we had the most goals, too. And that is why you are all here crying like little girls with skinned knees.

That was retaliation for the cross check on Crosby. Laviolette should have known the Penguins would retaliate.

The whole league hates Sydney - he might not get out of Boston alive tonight because of his antics in Pittsburgh against the Flyers - Boston's licking their chops. It's open season on him because of his own behavior. Unfortunately for him he'll also take the heat for Malkin and the coaches behavior as well. The whole league is tweeting, talking, posting about their chump like behavior both on and off the ice. No one likes Crosby but they like Ovechkin - and they didn't hate Gretzky - why is that - because Crosby's a punk, acts like a punk, talks like a punk and carry's himself like a punk. He brings shame to the honorable ice warriors - and while a few analyst (and of course the home town fans) might try to stick up for the most skilled player in the league - he has fewer and fewer advocates by the day. Punching that guy in the ba**s was atrocious but sums up what the kid is all about (no class). He could have been great for the league - he should have let Mario mentor him longer. But he's chosen to be a punk. He can dish it out but he can't take it - Schenn drills him along the boards and he can't take it - how dare you check me rookie. I blame his parents and the fawning hockey hierarchy for blowing his head up (no pun intended). He'll flame out as his own worst enemy and I think we are actually witnessing the final chapter. Even his own teammates hate him. What a shame for the NHL - they'll need to find a new hero to package. Crosby just doesn't have the required intangibles to garner the respect - he has mad skills but there is more to that in being a man.

Everyone is talking about the hit on Briere, but the hit on Grossmann was knee-to-knee with intent to injure Vitale should be suspended for that. Since he won't be, he deserves a visit from Jody Shelley or Zack Rinaldo on Saturday.

I appreciate everyone's passion here but this stuff has been going on for years, face it, hockey is a goon sport and there is a reason it is the 4th most popular sport in the states, take the goons out of it and you will see better action, let the skill players play instead of jacking them up every time they do well, hockey needs to protect its start so they can have some sort of brand, not "fake fights" and "scrums' to prove a invalid point.

JUST read that MIlbury was force to Apologize for his comments on Crosby!!! What Is the MOST DISTURBING about this league is when anyone says it the way it is! they either get FINED or are FORCED to Apologize By the LEAGUE...as was the case with Lavy's comment and now commentator Milbury on Sid the Little baby! What happened to freedom of speech, or freedom to ones opinion???? ( AGAIN NO ONE, I MEAN NO ONE IS ALLOWED to SAY OR DO ANYTHING AGAINST THAT LITTLE CRY BABY, CINDY...WHAT A JOKE!!!! ) I think the league needs to take a step back and really have a look at what they are doing. It has to be same for every body, not just for one player...their poster boy!

The national media force feeds Crosby and the Penguins on us. Again, tonight on NBC sports network (Boston hosting Pitt). I've been watch Pitt. games the past few weeks and the players are taking it very light on Crosby. Almost like letting him get acclimated with the league again. After Saturdays fiasco, i guarantee the players know it's game on. Crosby shouldn't stick his nose where it doesn't belong. It will happen and it will happen soon. "Maybe he shouldn't have been on the ice"

This is very easy to deal with - knock Crosby into outer space in the next meeting. And if it proves to end his career, Bylsma can answer all the questions as to why it happened.

Just beat the Penguins. Hurt them where it counts, the scoreboard. The last 2 playoff series against them the Flyers were the inferior team that resorted to goonery. The roles are reversed this time around.

Clean hit but not the time for a big hit. It's okay, queen crysby and the rest of the short bus riders will be getting pounded from start to finish Saturday and all through the first round. Hopefully the Bruins will go out of their way to hurt cindy and the other ladies tonight. Maybe Chara can "accidentally" spear blowsma and put the head queen on his knees where he belongs...gobble gobble.

Both teams are just as guilty of borderline play as the other. Unless you were actually at the game you didn't see half the BS that was going on. You can try to villianize Vitale but the fact of the matter is it was a clean hit by a player that plays that way 110% of the time, no matter the time or place. If you skate with your head down you're gonna get drilled, if there is time on the clock you best be aware of the surroundings. If your players are gonna insist on behind the play cheap shots, and biting, then they best keep their heads on a swivel. Nut up and move on team and fans that cry wolf..

Also, way to talk sh#t on players with concussions like Sid, I bet Pronger and Lindros really appreciate the lack of concern

Barely tapped Crosby, really, come on dude. Sending a message is not cross checking a player in the back, especially for in game hacks. You ever played hockey? Those hacks are in every game, every practice, at every level. So retaliating for something as common as a line change is a horrible (not too mention BS) excuse.

ORRR how about the fact that Sestito elbowed Horton of Bos in the head and he has been out since with a concussion? You guys blame cooke, but the Flyers are MUCH dirtier than the Pens. Slashes? Crosschecks? Wow. Crosby must have been the first player in league history to do any of those things. Grow a set, man up and admit you guys got worked over like a bunch of 10 year old girls.

I hope the Flyers make Cindy Crybaby a target all game long. Hit him every shift and maybe they will knock him out just like Briere. Expect more cheap shot from Malkin, who is one of the dirtiest players in the league and he gets away with it. I would love to see Cindy laid out at the blue line like Lindros was by Scott Stevens. That would be priceless.

The best way to pay back those scumbag Pens is a first round exit for them. We're classier than stooping to their level. Besides, you don't think the refs won't be watching the Flyers for retaliation? Please, if we so much as sneeze on Cindy we'll end up on the PK.

It seems crazy to me that Flyers fans are so upset by a "hard, but clean check." Except for the "clean" part, this type of behavior is the definition of Flyers' hockey. Peter L. just looks like a fool trying to cover for his own ineptitude in not being prepared for it. Was Briere playing hockey or just out for a skate? Wasn't he aware of who was on the ice? Did he need to skate hard up the middle with the puck and his head down with a 3 goal lead? He could have just dumped the puck and got off the ice if he was afraid of the guys on the ice. Next time you accuse Crosby of whining, look in a mirror and think back to The Hit. There's a whole lot of whining coming from the eastern half of the state.

so much for the flyers' toughness. sounds like the flyers' figure skaters have the gut deficiency. Was Laviolette looking to run up the score with a top line skating in the last minute? Bet that would be gutless in his book to. No worries Danny, the fragile Flyers probably won't face any tough teams in the playoffs.

Man I never get tired of watching the end of that game; the clean hit on Briere followed by Engelland's beat down of Simmonds and finishing with Laviolette's baby fit. Good stuff. Shame the Flyers are going to fall out of 5th place into 6th and ruin what would have been a great 1st round matchup.

Here's a hint for you Briere....don't skate across the middle with the puck and your head down. Flyers fans/coaches are complaining about the Pens having their 4th line out there but why would the Flyers have their best producing line out there as well? Not only that, if they felt the Pens were putting that line out there for one reason only, after the drop of the puck, why not switch your own lines?

Been a huge Flyers fans for years but Briere only has himself to blame. Any veteran with an ounce of sense would have seen how that shift was going to play out. The Flyers were well ahead but Danny looking to pad his stats goes figure skating into the middle of the ice knowing (or not I guess) those guys were out looking to hammer someone. Briere has been a major disappointment just about all year because his head is somewhere else and he only plays every other shift at best. Next time, give up the pass and save yourself......

The best part about the Stanley Cup playoffs is we don't have to listen to Coates, Jackson and Clement, A.K.A. Larry, Moe, and Curly - the Flyers three stooges.

Philly fans have "Pittsburgh Envy" - 3 Stanley Cups, 5 World Series Championships, 6 Superbowl trophies and smart enough to ignore the NBA.
