Briere, Grossmann will miss time; Lavy fined

POSTED: Monday, April 2, 2012, 2:10 PM
Danny Briere was injured in a collision with Pittsburgh's Joe Vitale in the Flyers' 6-4 win on Sunday. (Ron Cortes/Staff Photographer)

Which Flyers opponent do you like to beat the most?
I love to clobber the Penguins.
The Rangers are the best to beat.
I like it when the Flyers trample the Devils.
The Bruins are the team to beat.

It turns out center Danny Briere and defenseman Nick Grossmann were injured more seriously than the Flyers first believed.

Both will miss games this week but are expected to be ready for the playoffs.

Both were injured in collisions with Pittsburgh's Joe Vitale in the Flyers' 6-4 win on Sunday.

After Sunday's game, the Flyers said Briere was "fine" and that Grossmann was day-to-day with an apparent knee injury.

On Monday, they said Grossmann would miss seven to 10 days, That means he is out for the regular season, which ends Saturday. GM Paul Holmgren said Briere was out indefinitely with an upper-back contusion.

The Flyers play in Pittsburgh on Saturday. Think Vitale will be looking over his shoulder?

Lavy fined. Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was fined $10,000 by the NHL for actions late in Sunday's game in Pittsburgh. He broke a stick and screamed at Penguins coaches.

Penguins assistant Tony Granato was fined $2,500.

Bryz, Simmonds honored. The NHL announced that winger Wayne Simmonds was named the league's player of the week, and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was selected the player of the month.

Bryzgalov was 10-2-1 with a 1.43 GAA and .947 save percentage in March, and he set a franchise record with a scoreless streak that reached 249:43, the second-longest in the NHL since 1967-68.

Simmonds scored in four straight games, totaling five goals. He has a career-high 27 goals.

He is looking forward to an almost-certain playoff matchup with Pittsburgh in the first round.

"Yeah, definitely. It’s fun hockey; it’s like old-school hockey," he said. "You come to the rink, you battle everyday, you know there’s going to be fights, you know you’re gonna get hit and you know you’re going to have to hit back and that’s the type of hockey that we like to play. So I think that suits our team well.”

Simmonds was in a late brawl after Vitale hit Briere. He fought Penguins enforcer Deryk  Engelland despite injuring his eye the previous afternoon.

"It wasn’t ideal for me to fight in that situation, but Danny took a solid hit there and obviously I’m going to go to my player’s defense," he said. "That’s the type of player I am. It doesn’t matter if I have stitches in my eyes, I have to go in there and stand up for my teammate.”

Next: Rangers. The Flyers will host the Rangers Tuesday and try to salavage a win in the season series. New York is 5-0 and has outscored the Flyers, 19-8, including a 10-3 advantage in the third period.

The Rangers will try for their first sweep against the Flyers since 1971-72. Over the last two years, they have won seven straight over the Flyers,

New York's magic number to clinch the East's top seed is one point.

So basically when Homer is optmistic that both players will return for the playoffs, what he is really saying is both players are done for the entire season and playoffs.
Sam, when is JVR and Mez expected back?

Why would we take out Vitale? He's a goon that has no impact on a game...take out Crosby or Malkin. Skill player for a skill player.

I think the plan should always be check the opposition's best players as early and as often as possible. Take space away, make them work. To quote Kevin Lowe, get even by beating them on the scoreboard. Spending a second exacting "revenge" on Vitale is a wasted second. (Besides, the check was clean.)

Vitale delivered the best clean hit I've seen since Erica got destroyed by Kasparaitis. Don't skate with your head down.

How about the Scott Stevens hit on Lindros? Also, Cindy better be playing with his head-on-a-swivel or he'll be watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs from a bed.

Pittsburgh fans are amazing. They choke out of the playoffs the last two years (eliminated on home ice) and get their butts kicked all over the ice by the Flyers for two years.
Philly is 4-1 vs the flightless birds this year and 4-2 last year. The Flyers have never lost a game at the Consul Energy Center, humiliating the Pens in front of their own fans three times last year and twice this year...And Pens fans are still mouthing off. Incredible. Pittsburgh players are famous for their clean hits:
Brooks Orpik hits Erik Cole from behind breaking his neck:

Matt Cooke cheapshots Marc Savard, sending him to the hospital: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-I5m4f0ZXA

Schenn better play with head on a swivel or grow eyes in the back of his head.

Baby Brier gets clean hit to his chest and drops like a sack vs cross to the back after whistle blows.

    Who is cheap?

It was a clean hit, even a good hit, but if that's the best hit you've seen since Kaspar on Lindros, you must have been skipping hockey all these years.

And if you're going to effeminate Lindros' name, it only leaves the question of how we could possibly represent Crosby. Let's be frank: Lindros never dove or whined and always took care of his own business. The idea that he would flop like Crosby, or that Crosby is a one-man wrecking crew like Lindros was is a bit absurd. Come on.

Look at the play-by-play, you nitwits! Bylsma put Vitale out to counter Briere from 2 minutes into the game! Vitale delivered a clean hit to Briere - Laviolette shouldn't have had 48 on the ice if he didn't want him to get hit. The Philadelphia phan base has got the Orange-tinted glasses on thick today!

I looked throught the play by play and englland hadn't played for over 5 minutes and vitale hadn't played for almost 8 minutes. so that shoots down your theory of countering briere's line the whole game. they were sent out for one reason to injure someone!!1

Saturday's game should feature Mathers, Klotz and some knuckle bangers from the ECHL. The Flyers need to send their message to the Pens by dressing a lineup of fighters/hitters. Heck, give Berube a one-day contract to go destroy some P-burg d-bags.

"Upper back contusion"? Sounds like a cover story for another concussion. I hope they're just being cautious with Grossmann he's been a stud.

Simmonds has redefined scoring a goal the hard way. Couldn't be more deserving of player of the week.

I know Briere should have had his head up, but think about the context: since when does anything meaningful occur in a game AFTER an empty-net goal was scored? Nobody really pays attention in those circumstances. Perfectly legal, but Lavy was right to blow his lid and the players are going to love him for it.

You may call it a clean hit all day long - but if you think for one minute the intent was not to injure - you are delusional - like Malkin - punching G in the back of the head and Sidney initiating the bad blood by hitting Schen - thank you Mike Milbury for calling them out. I have two words for Mr. Sydney Crosby - sore looser. Pittsburgh has been ordained by the league - and their players have swallowed the kool-aid of entitlement. Here's hoping the Flyers continue to be a thorn in their side - win less at home Pittsburgh and their fans are frustrated beyond belief - as if the flyers are supposed to just show up for the coronation. Baffled by our new players and chagrined at how well we match up against them - they are scared to death to meet the flyers in the playoffs. The targeting of key players is no accident and they will continue to do that. Malkin will continue to throw chicken wing elbows at Giroux and Crosby will continue to cry to the refs and hope they don't call him for his dives, and slashes. The Penguins and their organization are a reflection of their star players - dirty and cheap. The Flyers outclass them on the scoreboard and within the organization. No matter how many Cups they have they will always be second class when it comes to Philadelphia - and it kills them.

No team lies more than the Flyers. Which means Briere got concussed again and is probably done for the year. There should be retribution for this but you have to consider Schenn took that shot at Crosby. He should have made it count. Either way, there was intent to injure in that play. Gonna be an ugly and hopefully great series.

Putting the goons out after an emtpy net goal to increase deficit to 3 is BS. the NHL stopped the "calling cards" for the next game years ago....And the cheap shot cries by Sidney are BS as well. NBC Sports, rewound the video seconds earlier, and he tooks a Post Whistle shot at Schenn in the corner. It was retaliation by Schenn, and considering how easily Crosby went down, he was expecting it and trying to draw a penalty. Forget the retalitation. take care of business this week, win the game Sat, make them play 4 games on Broad Street in the next 2 weeks.

Macho nitwits. Just like Scott Stevens used to do...game's decided a minute left, and he'd give one is "clean" message hits to a star player. It's that kind of insanity that gets people injured, and starts ridiculous WW wrestling type scenario. If it were Sydney Crosby who was leveled with a minute left in a decided game, all of Pittsburgh would have been up in arms and the league would have sanctined the hit.
(by the way I've witnessed Pittsburgh fans when they've visited Raleigh, and many were classless obnoxious northern red-necks...hate to generalize, but witessed a ton of fights instigated by visiting black jerseyed cretins and had beer spilled on me by some clown from Pittsburgh)

If game means little saturday, then penguins will rest crosby malkin etc. so first time to get them would be playoffs, so not much chance of playing flyer goons, but the flyers will have to look for a great open ice hit of their own to put the hurt on, and also how many times cn crosby slash flyers sticks without getting a penalty.

Philly is 4-1 vs the Pens this year and 4-2 last year.

Why don't you order bags for Pittsburgh fans to wear over their heads when they play the Flyers? The Flyers have never lost at the Consul Energy Center, pounding the pathetic Pens 5 times in a row. The Flyers are 4-1 vs the flightless birds this year and 4-2 last year. The Flyers recently beat the Pens ending their 11 game winning streak and in 2010 Philly beat Pittsburgh snapping a 12 game win streak. We have repeatedly beaten you when you were playing your best hockey and humiliated the Pens for years in the Steel City.

Don't take it out on Joe Vitale. Take it out on Crosby! Hit em where it hurts! Pitt is amazing. A team that struggled to get Crosby back in the line up due to concussions goes after the smallest guy during a 6-3 game who also has been battling concussions.

With the way the league has prevented players from policing each other, these injuries are just going to be a part of the game and teams and fans will just need to get used to it. The run at Briere yesterday at the end of a game, by a player who has no job other that to run someone in the last few minutes of a game illustrates why I thought the Flyers should have responded violently to the hit on Voracek by Kronwall. And I'm not talking about the post 80's response of square dance-wrestle-fights that the NHL has now, I'm talking about a crosscheck in the throat of the opposing teams stars. It's the only way to teach some players to respect your skilled guys. Schenn was onto something with the shot at Crosby, he just should have done it form the front and in the teeth. Then maybe Crosby won't be so quick to slash Giroux 3 or 4 times. Whether or not it’s a clean hit is meaningless. If you run one of our guys, there needs to be severe consequences for your team.

I believe Crosby actually initiated the Schenn incident. Down in the corner Cindy crosschecked Schenn either from behind or from the side either at or just after a whistle. Lines change on the whitle and Schenner decides to exact a little payback. NBC, of course, decides to show the 'end' of the play 11 times rather than the entire sequence.
Crosby gets dumped and his head immediately snaps to find a ref. Not just that instance. Any play, any game, any time. Players dont hold much repsect for guys who's first reflex is to ALWAYS look for a call. Refs dont appreciate it either. (im both player and official for 35 and 20 yrs). Watch him, Really takes away from his talent and relentless work ethic.

@hitman20--that was probably a shorter conversation than the ones they have about the Pens.
I'd be more worried about Grossmann than Briere. The 'injury' is likely a ploy to make the Pens think they did something effective, or to get the attention of Shanahan (which it probably won't since we don't wear red and white). The hit on Grossmann was knee-to-knee which is usually deemed intent to injure so where's the suspension or fine? Oh that's right, we wear orange and black so we don't get a second glance. If Saturday's game means nothing, Crosby/Malkin won't be on or they will see limited time. First shift of the playoffs, slam both of them into the boards. When those two start with the slashes and punches, it means they are getting frustrated, which means in turn they aren't going to be at the top of their game.

This is hockey, people get hurt, people get away with penalties. That doesn't mean that you target their best players. It's people like you who give all sports fans from this area a bad name.

It's called venting. I personally haven't called for anyone to be targeted but I understand a lot of this is venting so please, no lectures. We won but the most frustrating fact is that the rule book doesn't seem to apply to crybaby and ugly malkin. If any of our guys hit crybaby like that, the league would have suspended our player. No call on ugly when he shoved G's head into the ice, no calls on obvious slashing by crybaby, no calls on diving by Cindy, no call on the knee-to-knee - same old same old. And it's funny how the bandwagon pens fans think we're whining when it's what they and their team do all season. Hypocrites and they probably don't even know the definition. Flyers don't have to be dirty to win. Just keep playing hard and get under their skin which isn't so hard since they're such sensitive pansies. And Crosby better keep his head up - bruins, rangers, then the Flyers. How stupid was his comment - makes him a complete target for good hard clean hits. Bylsma is a worm. Can't fight his own fights. Hides behind his assistant. Cindy hides behind Asham. Malkin does the sneaky dirty hits. Man-up pens! No wonder all the teams hate you and your so-called fans. Loved Couts and Schenn sticking up for themselves. Loved seeing these whiners get pushed around by our rookies. Go Flyers!

If there was ever a time to put a bounty on somebody's head it would be on Saturday. Like others have said, going after Joe Vitale is pointless and won't have any effect on the playoffs. I say 50K for whoever takes out either Crosby or Malkin. These Penguins play like they forgot that one of their best players is venerable to head shots.

I want Malkin or Cindy the Cry baby Crosby Out indefinitely! They Go after our Stars we need to go after theirs..an eye for an eye! Obviously Bettman and the league want Cry Baby to do be their TV Star, they spend the entire game only talking about him, if it's a choice, I would rather take out Malkin, he is 10 times more dangerous than little Girl Cindy.

I don't understand why you keep bringing up the cross check on cindy from schenn. You isolate 1 event from a 60 minute hockey game. As many on here have pointed out, cindy was offering his own version of cheap shots. If you review the game video you will see cindy supplying at least 2 vicious stick slashes to 2 different flyers, one being Giroux's hands. You will also see cindy elbowing/ pushing schenn just previous to schenn's cross check. You, and many others, keep pointing to the schenn incident but this all started way before that with cindy. I am not justifying schenn's cross check but cindy was asking for it. He may be talented but he is a gutless snake who slithers on the fringe not wanting to man up or play a man's version of hockey.

Lavy shouldn't have rolled Briere's line out there. The Pens had been playing dirty all day and were frustrated. That said, when one of your best players has lost 60 games to repeated concussions, allowing one of you goons to target another concussion-prone skill player is bush league. Lavy is right to go after the Pens coaches. All the coaches and players should have more respect for their competition than to do what Vitale and Bylesma did.

Going after Vitale or Engelland does nothing for the Flyers. Play hard, play clean, take the body, finish your checks...get Geno and Sid frustrated and send them to the golf course. That will be the best punishment for the cheap shot artists.

Send in Jody Shelly early in Saturday's game and let him do some damage...he's expendable. Honestly let him hunt heads, whomever he he can get a solid shot on go for it. The gloves are off surprised there are no suspensions. Pens made a little jab on Sid a big deal....well then play hardball my firends.

I feel so bad for the PF Flyers, considering as Flyer Fan For Life pointed out so eloquently, that the Flyers own the Penguins. Perhaps if you knuckeheads paid more attention to playing hockey and less to winning the physical battle, you might have win a Stanley Cup more than once every 37 years. Oh and by the way, the Pens have won 2 fairly recently. Zip it until you win it, put a skirt on Briere and send him back out.

We feel so bad for Pittsburgh fans. They have lost four out of 5 to the Flyers this year, 4 out of six last year. The Flyers are undefeated at the Consul Energy Center, sporting a perfect 5-0 record in the Steel City over the past two seasons. The Flyers recently beat the Pens ending their 12 game winning streak, they beat the Pens in 2010 ending an 11 game streak. We have repeatedly beaten you when you were playing your best hockey, humiliated you for years in front of your own fans..and you're still running your mouth? LOLOLOLOL

Hey, "Truth Teller", already a boast you sabotage with your insipid response. Before getting into the absurdity of it, the fact it is inane, vapid, empty as the canyons of Pitts burgh's coal mines, ask yourself this: What does it say psychologically that you come to a foreign newspaper's site, to merely instigate? Huh, armchair warrior?? Can't hear you.... We both know the real "TRUTH" here, 98 pound weakling living vicariously through the exploits of his team's tough enforcers, who don't fight the large, only the skill players. Think of Cindy, since you like to speak of "skirts", pot, kettle, black anyone? Here is the very definition of a coward, a slasher and behind the scene hacker, a diver at a touch. I hope the Flyers line him up for a clear open ice hit. Forget Vitale, who is he anyway, but some goon. We want Cindy's skirt plastered against the ice or boards. Welcome troll. Didn't the Pens come back to eliminate the Philly Phags from the playoffs last time they met in the playoffs? Which is also the last time the Pens won the Cup. When did the Flyers last win the Cup? Just remember this:

    Pens - 3 Cups
    Steelers -- 6 Superbowls
    Pirates -- 5 World Series

Flyers - 2 (One for each tooth)

2011 - Pens blow a 3-1 lead against Tampa and choke out of the playoffs in the first round.

2010 - Pen eliminated by number 8 seed Canadiens in the last ever game at Melon Area. The Pens finish as losers, the same way they started.

You´re not usually gonna see me calling for vengeance, believe me. I´m one of those soft hockey fans that always hated Scott Stevens and always thought better one hit to few then one too many to avoid serious injuries. Hockey is forth and foremost a skill game and I much rather watch Crosby and Malkin play their magic then Kronwall and Phaneuf their so called ones.
But this has infuriated me beyond belief! When you take in the whole aspect, the history and everything. A team with a star that has had so much issues with concussions does that! For a little bump that was clearly instigated by Crosby, probably to draw a penalty (pretty smart play, I can understand that one). And they put out their goons, goes after the smallest skilled player we have (who also happens to have a history of concussions) and then hide behind that little instigated bump. And Ashams fists into the face of a rookie entangled with another players and with his gloves still on. And Engelland throwing away at a torn up face that should make any human beeing think twice and just hold on instead. I´m so mad I can´t even fins the words.
And then Crosbys comment after the game, that one about that maybe his coach shouldn´t have put him out there! Is he for real? Is he insane? I was one of those Flyers fans hoping and praying that he would get well and comeback since he´s arguably the best player out there right now. Just lost all respect that I had left for that kid.

For saturday (or the plaoffs if the Pens chicken out and bench half their team) I wan´t vengeance. I want an eye for an eye. Just lost all respect I had for Pens as an organisation. They brought it upon themselves. Gutless unsportsmanlike punks!

If Pens fans think it's totally fine for Malkin to drag down Giroux from behind, pin him to the ice, and throw 3 or 4 rabbit punches before getting up, that's all right. Just don't complain if Hartnell does the same thing to Crosby. I'm sure a few shots to the back of the head and neck would feel real nice after his last year or so. He'd go right back to seeing triple.

The Flyers have never lost at the Consul Energy Center, humiliating the Pens on their own fans twice this year and three times last year. The Flyers have repeatedly beaten the Pens when they were playing their best hockey and pounded them five straight times in Pittsburgh. But one thing I'll say for Pittsburgh, although they can't beat the Flyers they are great at running their mouths.

Cheap shot on Crosby? He deserves more than that for what he got away with the whole game. Maybe if the NHL refereed each game and each player equally, Crybaby would have to pay for his sins himself....not have his girlfriends do it for him. He may be a great scorer on paper but he will NEVER go down as one of the best because of his diving, whining, and lack of manhood on the ice. What young hocket player would ever want to be a "Crosby" as compared to REAL players with talent, grit, and selfless efforts toward his team and teamates. There's a reason why others are called "great" and he's referred to as "Sid the Kid". Grow up Crosby and help your team by more than hogging the puck, diving, whining, and owning the officiating crew. IDK cause I'm not a Pens fan but it sure seemed they were a lot better overall without him on the ice this year. As far as knocking him out of a game, I think the flyers as a team already have him "outta the game".

This entire thread is silly and childish. I've been going to Flyers games for years and just appreciate the game, not all of these antics. If you want to blame somebody, blame the league for allowing officiating to continue to slip...interference, holding, and the like not being called which leads to frustration on both sides. Truthfully, something that hasn't been mentioned...Briere speared Craig Adams immediately following the faceoff. If that penalty is called, nothing else happens. If you don't believe me, what the draw on you tube, and be honest with yourself. I love Lavvy but he shouldn't have had Danny out there to begin with and needs to look in the mirror.

Thank you! First honest response I've seen on here. I called the Adams spear. You are correct. Clutching and grabbing is back and it's not helping the game at all.
Lavy had no business putting Briere out there and Briere should have been penalized for the spear. That would have stopped everything.

Pitt fans that claim Lavy shouldn't have had Briere out at the end of the game do not understand how line changes work. The away team must send their line out first. The home team has the advantage of waiting to see who the away team sends out onto the ice after a stoppage of play. Get a clue.

I doubt too many, but your "one ping only" is a great metaphor for the torpedo that is launched for Crosby's Jersey number by Rinaldo, or even Jody Shelley. Time to show Cindy an early retirement. As to the psychologically impaired Pitts burgh ( they even got the city name right ) who I addressed earlier through alias #4 "Mr Pittsburgh" ( is he covered in coal dust? ), what possesses someone to register at a foreign news site, INSTIGATE, and then wonder why the locals get offended? You are either a dense teenager in mommy's basement, or the friendless punk who finds this "fun". Flyers showed again they can outskate the Pens at their own game. It's the Pens who resort to goonery -- usually increasingly frustrated but uncalled slashes by Crosby and Malkin, who seem to feel it is their right if not to score, than to slash and trip. Refs obviously agree.

So they run Briere, who was an idiot in his own right for skating with his head down at that point, en route to yet another neutral zone turnover, on a clean hit. Thus requiring an already stitched Simmonds (who has doubled Briere's goal output at 1/3rd the price) to come to his rescue against the Pens purported tuff guy.

Come next game, forget about Crosby. Hit Malkin. It's clear he hates it. And I would dress Shelley only to immediately fight Engelland. And if I had to fire my Rinaldo bullet, it would be at Letang.

But Flyers don't have the horses to play the physical game. They need to skate. Next Sat we'll have a couple tons on the sidelines already with Pronger, JVR, Grossman, Mezaros, etc.

"Keep your head up"is turning into a cliche.Briere,Voracek, Umberger,Booth,Crosby,Paciaretty,Lindros and way back to Brian Propp being hit by chelios thier heads were up, they just didn't see it coming, shoulder pads to the jaw or the side of the head like in the career ending hit on Primeau. Most of these hits were so called clean and received no penality. The NHL tries to choreagraph games to help the stars match up or in the annual case of let's help the maple leafs to get to playoffs, case in point, flyers no power plays in 2 games.Sunday's game was a disgrace by those 2 referees.I am betting on Jackson being there on Saturdays game.To quote Dornhoeffer years back"Jackson is the 2nd best referee in the NHL ALL THE OTHER REFS ARE TIED FOR 1ST"

Vitale is a take out player who doesn't play the puck if he is suspended they won't miss him,his mission was completed saturday.Lavy made the mistake of thinking the pens were going to try for a miracle tie,bla bla was thinking of next week's game with one less flyer.

Crosby knew Schenn might retaliate that's why he didn't turn around and looked at the refs.Englaand? has to be one of the lowest life forms to suit up.To go after a player who stiched? up in the most vulnerable place and out weighed by 50 lbs.The class fighters take their helmets off.Simmonds showed he was a man.

Lavy fined $10K and Granato only $2500? No favortism here folks!

Watch the replays--Crosby loses the faceoff, slashes the Flyer who wins it, in clear view of the ref since the puck is right there, no arm up. Asham runs around the ice shoving and pushing, they grab Rinaldo who wasn't even doing anything yet? Its absolutely ridiculous that these refs are not taken to task. They better shape them up because hockey is gaining in popularity and people won't tolerate it.
