Adams suspended; Bylsma fined

POSTED: Monday, April 16, 2012, 6:07 PM

Before Brendan Shanahan even gets to his scheduled hearings with Penguins forwards James Neal and Arron Asham, this much we know:

Pittsburgh will be without forward Craig Adams for Game 4 and coach Dan Bylsma's pockets will be a little lighter.

Adams was suspended one game on Monday, a mandatory suspension as per NHL rules for being handed an instigator penalty in the waning moments of Game 3. The rules (46.12, 46.22) stipulate that a player receives an automatic suspension for an instigator call with under five minutes to play in regulation or in overtime.

It's the NHL's way to try and curb games from getting out of hand late.

It didn't work on Sunday.

Bylsma was fined $10,000, also an automatic penalty, since coaches are supposed to be in control of players late in games. His fine money will go to the NHL Foundation.

Adams was simply caught in the middle. He was forced to clean up for Sidney Crosby's dirty business, once Crosby grabbed Scott Hartnell by the back of his jersey and tried to tangle. Adams needed to step in since Crosby does not normally fight. Now, it has cost him a playoff game.

Neal and Asham are scheduled for hearings on Tuesday. Asham's is of the "in person" variety, meaning that he will need to be seen in person by Shanahan at the league's New York headquarters.

6 pm Eastern, and still no word on Asham and Neal. Is one of Giroux' cousins married to one of Shanny's? Don't want to look biased...

@steelfan: All those championships and winning can't wash away the horrid taste in your mouth of your Pens being embarrassed on a national stage, can it? You are bitter and who can blame you? Your team is being exposed for the fraud it is. The Pens ducked the Flyers three seasons ago when they tanked games in the regular season; but they couldn't save themselves in the first round this time. Don’t feel too bad though, the Pens just ran into a better team with a better game plan and more heart.

one of the biggest disgrace of that game ( notice i said one of) is how a professional, former NHL coach of they year loses total control of his players like that. I for one don't believe he was sending out there to do that. When the chaos broke they were basically going goal for goal, so they where technically still in the game. I say let them try to keep gooning it up as long as none of our players get seriously injured, that means the pens will spending more time trying to bully the flyers (LOL) & less time playing their puck control style of game.

Neal will get off only with a weak fine. There's no way the NHL is going to remove a 35-goal scorer from the Pens' lineup in an elimination game, even if he richly deserves it.

Brenda Shanahan tosing up a few cookies to distract from Neal not getting a face to face (gee, the video only had him airborn for a moment). Bettman and his cronies are screwing up a great sport playing pick & choose with the ruse.. err... rules.

Nowhere else I'd rather be, steelfan. And when I wake up tomorrow, I'll be 5 hours and a chain of mountains away from the yinzers crying into their Arn Cities. We have culture and history; you have ketchup and abandoned steel mills. Enjoy your fading glory.
Did you really misspell Lemieux AND Pittsburgh? Yowzah. Our statues include Dr. J, Wilt Chamberlain (they played pro basketball, which doesn't exist on the wrong side of the Appalachians) and Mike Schmidt, the greatest 3rd baseman ever. We have plenty more too, all real heroes.

Hold on i have to laugh again HAHAHAHAHA. Just keep bringing up the Steelers cause thats all you got man. The only time I stop in Pittsburgh is to take a dump before i get to Chicago. In Pittsuburg we honor real sports heros with statues, Clemente, Stargell, Lemeuix, Mazeroski. In Philly they have a statue of Rocky Balboa. What's that tell ya? Starved for a winner.

Make that Three statues, Lemeuix will probably ask to have his removed. To bring up those MEN in the same breath as that cry baby Crosby is disrespectful to their memory.

Let's see we have statues of Dr. J, Kate Smith (sang God Bless America at Flyers games) , Robin Roberts, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Broadcaster Harry Kalas (the fans paid for this one), Richie Ashburn, and Connie Mack. Typical yinzer about as bright as a bug zapper.

I wish we had that mindset, steelfan. We've been conditioned to expect the worst. 10,000 losses, and no Super Bowls has a nasty effect on a city's psyche. You have the envy of the NFL, no doubt about it. And after a mediocre first 25 years, the Pens developed a real place in the NHL. So why don't you expect it from the Pirates? They have a history and a pedigree, and yet they have been mediocre for 20 years.

Yeah, steelfan, they do. Do you get all warm and fuzzy remembering the glory days of 1903, when the Pirates were good, and Pittsburgh had a purpose? We do too. It's why we get so geeked up about the 1948 Eagles. Wake me up when the Pirates are relevant, or when you become a 4-sport city. Enjoy Oakmont if you can - Cindy and Jenny Malkin have probably already snagged the good tee times.

Doctor D, Thanks for the kind words. Here's the difference between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. In Pittsburgh, we expect to win. We demand it. And in my life time I've been forunate to have witnessed 2 World Series Championship, 3 Stanley Cups, 6 Superbowls and a Nation Championship in college football (If we want to count Penn State, we can up that number). In Philadelphia, you've accounted for 2 Stanley Cups and 2 World Series and 1 NBA title. That's it. In Philly, your just happy to be there.

You couldn't be more wrong with this statement. As a Philadelphian living in Pitt the difference between us is that we support our teams NO MATTER WHAT. "yinz guys" turn your backs on your team at the slightest sign of adversity. As soon as the team does good again all of a sudden EVERYONE has been a life long fan.

Hey remember when The pens almost ended up in KC becasue they were terrible and couldn't fill the stands until the tanked 3 seasons to lock up some first round draft picks? I do.

All over the radio today you are counting your team out and praising the Flyers (mostly to save face so you don't look like a bunch of hypocrites). Its a good thing you all still have the tags on your Crosby jerseys so you can take them back to Giant Eagle after the bandwagon stops.

Your city thrives on nothing but sports. You manufacture championships becasue you have nothing else. Take away all your titles and what does your city have? Sandwiches with fries on them and sh*ty beer? Nice legacy. What about Philly you ask? Well, for starters, freedom ( see declaration of independence)...Your welcome by the way.

It's amazing, the Flyers have played goon hockey since 1967. Philly is finally getting a look at what the rest of us real hockey fans had to put up with when they played the Flyers. Now, all of the sudden, you don't like it. It wouldn't suprise me if the Flyers found a way to choke in this series. It ain't over till the fat lady sings. And Kate Smith is dead (video replays don't count).

As for the Pirates, who by the way took 2 of 3 from Philly, they stink. But they've still have more championships than your Phillies. Did I mention the Philllies have the most losses in MLB history? By the way isn't a philly a young female horse too young to be called a mare. Thought so.

As for having an NBA team, if you want to count the Sixers, well I guess they're in the NBA. The NBA needs door mats too.

I'll give Steelfan credit for having the stones to show up here today, unlike most of the yappy yinzers from the Burgh.
That said - the Flyers are playing with house money, bro. They traded away their 2 biggest stars over the summer and lost their captain for the season. As such, they weren't expected to do much. The Pens were the chic choice to win the Cup, and they are being trounced from one end of the state to the other. The Flyers can't choke at this point, as expectations were relatively low for such a young team. The Pens, however... ouch.
Baseball? You wanna bring up baseball? 10,000 losses is ancient history, chief. You want to make fun of the Phils being terrible for the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, go ahead. You have the nicest park in MLB and NO ONE GOES. Because the last time the Bucs were good, I was in high school. The last time they won anything, I was in PRESCHOOL. Don't even bother with that.
The Sixers are mediocre, true; and your team is... oh, what's that? You say you don't even HAVE a team? Why, any self-respecting city has a team. Christ, Sacramento, Memphis and Salt Lake City have teams. That sucks, dude.
And as far as the Steelers go, um... uh... you have a very nice team, sir.

steelfan....Philly has an NBA team and a MLB team...Pittsburgh has neither because Pittsburgh fans are fair weather (rival Atlanta sports fair weather-ism).

Pittsburgh does have the Penguins, however, who sit down to pee, are installing a tampon dispenser in their locker room and are the laughing stock of the NHL (even Canadians fans are pointing & laughing out loud at Pittsburgh now). The Penguins will easily win the NHL's Liberace Award for the most gay team in the league this year.

Steelers are a great franchise. No doubt. But waving towels at an NFL game is, well, NFL Liberace Award worthy. You get the point.

Where is Gary Bettman's apology for poor officiating in Sunday's game? He was so quick to kiss the Penguins' butts with his mea culpa concerning that missed off-side call on Briere's goal in the first game. No player was put in danger of serious injury because of that. The only thing hurt were the Penguins' feelings. Yesterday, Courterier could have been seriously injured because the officials totally lost control of the game. Bettman has no creditability - PERIOD!

Dude, I live out here and I don't buy it for one minute. Pittsburgh has the largest population of flip-flopers in the world. The only reason they are saying this is becasue the realize their team is doing what they have been protesting for years and now they look like a bunch of hypocrites.

Its nothing more than an attempt to save face and appear to leave the series on a high note. I guarantee EVERY pens fan at home watching Sundays game was up out of their folding chair when Neal took a run at both Giroux and Coutier and when Asham cross checked Schen to the throat.

To the people of Philadelphia, enjoy this while you can. Most likely the Flyers will be bounced in the next round. If the do luck out and go far, they'll probably choke like most Philadelphia teams do. Short of the Phillies getting lucky, your sad city has been title starved for years. Even with 19 years of losing the Pirates are still over .500, Your Phillies have the most losses in MLB history, so please no baseball comments. Your Eagles stink. When they win their next Superbowl, they'll only be 5 behind the Steelers. The Sixers? Who cares, if your lucky, maybe a lottery pick. The Flyers, don't worry, they'll choke somewhere in these playoffs. They haven't won anything yet. It must be hell knowing that every day you wake up, you wake up in Philly.

Nobody can choke like the Pens:

2010 - Penguins eliminated in Pittsburgh by the number 8 seed Canadiens.

2011 - Pens blow a 3-1 series lead over Tampa and choke out of the playoffs in the first round.

2012 - Game 1 Pens jump to a 3-0 lead over the hated Flyers, but choke the game away.
Game 2 Pens jump to a 2-0 lead and hold four different leads over Philly, but choke in the end
Game 3 Pens jump out to a 1-0 lead and then draw a power play. They promptly surrender another short-handed goal en route to a humiliating 8-4 loss.

Winning a cup is what this is all about. I applaud Lavi for keeping the guys disciplined and out of the penalty box. We have too much talent and skill for the Pens and no longer need to play our historical style to win. Refreshing change and credit to 17 for masterminding a re-build of this team inside of 1 year. Today's NHL is a finesse league and Homer (despite his credentials as the most rugged right wing this club has ever featured) correctly has built the squad to win given the current rules.

Would love to see Adams slap Crysby around, since he's cost Adams a playoff game. Blysma should also demand Crysby pay the fine. Then again, he probably has no idea there was a scrum there at the end. After all, he did think Asham hit Schenn low on the chest....

It's not just that the Penguins are losing badly in the Stanley Cup final, reputations are being lost as well. Unless they want to be remembered for nothing more accomplished than Gary Roberts' awful, chicken-scat cheap shot left hook to the temple of concussion-recovering Johan Franzen.

"Adams was simply caught in the middle. He was forced to clean up for Sidney Crosby's dirty business, once Crosby grabbed Scott Hartnell by the back of his jersey and tried to tangle. Adams needed to step in since Crosby does not normally fight. Now, it has cost him a playoff game."

Huh? If all that is true, then maybe Crosby needs to not start things he can't finish. This is as stupid as Crosby's reason for smacking the glove away. They're all responsible for their own actions, they didn't need to do any of it.

Shanahan was a ranger and like cindy, is no fan of the Flyers. Expect as much leniency as you would punishment if it was the other way around. That said, I don't see any way he can skate around Neal leaving his feet and Asham's clear intent to injure.

First instinct is to cheer this suspension, however I don't trust the NHL. In the past, they have justified waiving this 'automatic suspension' when the facts allowed. By canning Adams now, it gives Shanny cover to hit Asham with a couple games, then let Neal get off under the guise of "2 Pens already got suspensions so we were tough enough". Adams got hosed by his crybaby captain yesterday, and the league's double standard today. I will be SHOCKED if Neal gets a game.

that was exactly what i was thinking. Neal was the nastiest of all of them and he is going to get off.

Cindy is a helluva team player...way to hang out your teammates D bag. Grow a pair, stop whining, and maybe you'll get some respect. Webster's definition of a skilled prima donna: See Sid Crosby

The Pittsburgh Penguins sit down to pee. I hear they are installing a tampon dispenser in their locker room. Crosby will be first in line to pick up supplies.
