Ray Emery defeated his former teammates, but the Flyers goalie was upstaged by two players who returned from injuries - Danny Briere and James van Riemsdyk - and combined for three goals in last night's 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.

With 19,321 watching at the Wachovia Center, the Flyers registered their fifth consecutive win and scored two goals on their league-best power play. The winning streak matches their longest since last December.

The Flyers, just as they had promised, did a good job protecting Emery in his first appearance against Ottawa. They allowed only 23 shots and few good chances, pulling away from a 2-1 lead with three unanswered goals in the final period - two by Briere.

"I think you could see we played an amazing defensive game," said Emery, who called it a "fun game" to play. "The boys, I thought, were real mindful of that [his Ottawa past], and sacrificed a bit and then started to roll and buried our chances."

Briere, who had missed four games with a leg injury, scored two goals for the 29th time in his career.

"There was a lot of talk about him facing the Sens for the first time . . . and we're definitely happy for him," Briere said. "He's been playing well; he's been a great teammate for us, so it's good to give back to him."

Briere swatted in a midair rebound of a Jeff Carter shot to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead with 13 minutes, 4 seconds remaining, then skated nearly the length of the ice and scored from the right circle less than seven minutes later.

Van Riemsdyk, sidelined the last half of the previous game with a broken left pinkie, had given the Flyers a 2-1 lead on a power-play goal late in the second period. Blair Betts, the steady center, contributed his first goal as a Flyer, also on the power play.

The Flyers are 8-0 with Betts in the lineup.

Darroll Powe and Briere added insurance goals to finish off the 3-0 third-period blitz.

"I thought the first 40 minutes we played very well. I don't know if we could play much better on the road than that," Ottawa coach Cory Clouston said.

"We really talked about upping our intensity a little bit and upping our game in the third to put the team away," said van Riemsdyk, who has points in 10 of his 13 games.

Because of problems on and off the ice, Emery was released from Ottawa two seasons ago and, in effect, banished to Russia for a year when no NHL team wanted him.

Last night, thanks to his teammates, he gained sweet revenge.

Betts' first goal as a Flyer, on the power play, gave his team a 1-0 lead with 10:36 left in the second period.

The center got the puck behind the net and fired it out front, bouncing it off the stick and leg of Ottawa goalie Pascal Leclaire and into the net with five seconds remaining in the power play.

Earlier this season, Betts missed seven games because of a dislocated right shoulder.

"You play a half-dozen games or so, and you are kind of wondering when that first one is going to get in and you can start feeling good," said Betts, who is playing with a shoulder brace.

Ottawa's Mike Fisher scored on a power-play goal to tie the score, 1-1, with 5:01 left in the second period.

But the Flyers' power play, which is ranked No. 1 in the league, quickly added its second goal of the night.

"You can't just solely rely on the power play to win games, but it sure can help . . . and I thought that was the case tonight," coach John Stevens said.

About 11/2 minutes after Fisher's goal, van Riemsdyk took a brilliant pass from Carter (two assists) and scored his fourth goal of his impressive rookie season.

Carter streaked into the offensive zone and, as he neared the right goal line, collected the puck off the backboards and sent a blind pass to van Riemsdyk, who quickly whipped a shot into the net from the left circle. The goal was briefly vacated because Leclaire had slid over to contain Carter on the right and couldn't get back in time.

"The Flyers are 8-0 with Betts in the lineup." Sit him down the rest of the year and only use him in the playoffs!

I saw the vote that Pronger is the nastiest D in the league. Is it me, or does he not look like he's that nasty anymore. He's playing great, don't get me wrong, but I haven't seen him crushing people into the boards or laying anyone out.

lol @ schnitzelboy. Amazing how much impact Betts has, isn't it?

I told a friend during that last week before the season (when Betts was still unsigned) that of all the moves the Flyers made over the past 10 years (Hatcher, Roenick, Forsberg, etc) Betts was probably the biggest signing they could make. I really thought that his defensive skills and faceoff % would make the difference for this team. I think I understated his importance.

I propose a trade to GM Paul Holmgrem: Once Simon Gagne is back, trade him and his expiring contract (and career), along with young, potential super star Jeff Carter to the Tampa Bay Lighting for Vincent Lecavalier. Feedback anyone???

Leehblanc, while I can't argue he provides balance, what was your amazing prediction based on? Betts was 62nd in the league last year in faceoff wins. Richards and Carter were in the 64th & 69th. HOW does that really improve the team? No way they could predict Betts returning from injury and doing better than 62nd. The reality that the fans need to look at, is that Betts is a solid player who doesn't take stupid penalities. He provides balance to a 4th or even 3rd line if needed. The real problem here is that Pylora is being given valuable time that Giroux earned with the top lines and Girouz is wasting away. Carcillo, Betts, LaPierre, and even Powe are tough to play against, but guys like Pylora either need to score or make room for someone else.

Leehblanc, Betts is a nice, solid player who brings a little sanity to the ice. But when Holmgren retires and they ask him for the highlight of his career as a GM, I doubt he's going to say "Signing Blair Betts."

Enough about Blair Betts already...he is an ok face off man and a decent penalty killer...There are a dozen guys just like him in the league we could likely sign to fill his spot if needed...BTW...where are all the JVR and Emery Bashers...I put up with reading your comments all summer...now...nowhere to be seen....you should have spent time bashing Gags...he is the guy that needed to go, while he was "healthy" and we could have gotten something for him...

Phillywise you are crazy!!!!! - I would take Carter any day over Vinny. DICKIE Betts is THE man!!! I agree Simon has been slow to start this year but you do not get invited to the Olympic tryout for being a slug.

PhillyWise, I would have to say no to that trade. You would be giving up two solid two-way players for a good one-way player. Lacavalier is really weak defensively and his offense has been horrid this year.

I've got feedback Phillywise - That is idiotic. Why would you give up Jeff Carter, one of the young snipers in the league, for a guy going on 30 who is playing on a line with Todd Fedoruk? Plus Gagne, who while he is hurt now, when he comes back is a very good player. Lets take Gagne out of the picture, would you trade Carter for Lecavalier straight up? And why?

Jamiller30: His offense has been horrible because he is on an awful team. Flyers will not win the Stanley Cup with this team right now. They need to move some of the pieces around. Gagne is off to a slow start because his career is finished. He is like Asante Samuel's when it comes to contact. 5 on 5, Gagne kills the Flyers defensively cause he won't play the puck on the boards. He's done. And he got invited to the Olympics because of what he has achieved in his career. Not what he has done recently. And Carter needs to put on about 15 pounds before I can take him seriously.

A goalie is never upstaged when he is only scored upon 1 time. Somewhat of a lack of hockey knowledge and etiquette, goalies always get star of the game for a performance like this game asgainst such a good team, imo.

We need more muckers and grinders...where's trent klatt...lets bring him back! Put him on a line with Betts and they'll score 50 goals.

WOW Trent Klatt, I haven't heard that name in way too many years. The Klatter yea we need him and Betts would score 30 goals each for us..... get real Betts is doing a good job and we need to be happy about that but to say he is all that in the faceoff dots is a little hard to do. I just hope he keep his level of play all season and in the playoffs too where it is important to win the draws in both zones! As for Gags once he is back and healthy he will produce goals for us just wait and see! As for the above trade talk please give me a break Vinnie is a good scorer but sucks in his own end so no way on the trade, if we make a trade like that I would be looking at the duck and Pronger's old D partner.. He would give us the best D in the league!!! But at what cost??? Just a thought
