With Simon Gagne sidelined for six to eight weeks, would the Flyers be interested in bringing past-his-prime forward Peter Forsberg back to Philly?

Well, general manager Paul Holmgren is keeping his options open, but he downplayed a report that the Flyers have dispatched scout Ilkka Sinisalo to the Karjala Cup specifically to check out the 36-year-old Forsberg. The tourney starts Thursday in Finland.
“Ilkka will be at the tournament anyway, and to say he’s scouting Peter is a stretch,” Holmgren said Tuesday night.  “But he’ll probably see him play.”
Holmgren said that “if Peter is healthy and interested in returning to the NHL, who wouldn’t have interest? But that’s putting the cart before the horse. We don’t know if he’s healthy. We’ll see how it plays out and then cross that bridge.”
In other words, like every other GM, Holmgren has to keep his options open, but I'd be very surprised if Foppa returned.

Gagne had successful hernia and abdominal surgery Tuesday, Holmgren said. Before the operation, one of the ultrasounds appeared to show that Gagne had two small hernias near his belly buton, but when surgery was performed, it was discovered he only had one hernia, the GM reported.

The left winger is expected to miss at least 20 more games.

Read my story in Wednesday's Inquirer about emerging left winger James van Riemsdyk, who could become the first rookie-of-the-year in the Flyers' history.

You may be surprised that Bobby Clarke didn't win the Calder Trophy as the top rookie. Chicago goalie Tony Esposito was the rookie-of-the-year in Clarke's first season, 1969-70.

The Flyers, who lead the league in goals per game (3.67) and power-play success (28.1 percent), play at Buffalo Friday.

Forsberg is the best one-legged skater I've ever seen.

I'd rather have Ilkka Sinisalo out there than Forsberg.. ...the whole toe / foot injury that magically healed in time for him to play for Sweden in the Winter Olympics really stuck it to us fans.

I wouldn't be surprised about Clarke not winning the Calder. No Flyer has ever won the Calder. I'm open to Forsberg, but only if Vagne is out longer than expected and Forsberg is healthy.

foppa would instantly become the best faceoff guy on the team and if he was willing to play just 10 to 15 minutes a game, why not take him? you don't think he'd be an upgrade over powe?

Maybe Ilka Sinisalo is willing to play too? He was great!! And while I'm at it, does anyone remember Ron Flockart?

Forsberg on one leg plays with more guts than Briere and Gagne put together. Maybe the frenchie twins would stop getting hurt all the time if they tried playing without carrying their heavy wallets in their pants.

If Forsberg can play on both legs then i would want him on my team. I would imagine his price would be lower than what he is worth. If he gets injured oh well we still have a good team. Forsberg is what Gagne needs to get rolling in 6-8 weeks.

A Forsberg on 1 1/2 leg can be the difference between the 2 round and the stanley cup. Sure l am a swede but not really a Forsberg fan, however. A saw his 3 games (3g, 1a) in the swedish eliteleague and he looked 100% Now it's 3 games in 4 days agains the best players in europe all fighting for spots on the national teams in Finland, Russia and Czech rep so we will know in 5 days if Homie should make a move!

Yeah, OK. Call me a sucker, but if Forsberg is into it and proves he can go well before he ever comes...I mean, come on. Again, just like with any player, you make sure he can go. But if he can and he wants to play...he's not better than Mika Pyorala? He wouldn't cost much, you'd think, as well.
