Flyers taking advantage of better even-strength play

One thing that has been plaguing the Flyers this season, besides the constant and debilitating string of lower body injuries, was been their 5-on-5, even-strength play.

Tied for last with the Islanders in the Atlantic Division, Saturday's game against Carolina was a step in the right direction.

"We felt, charting the chances for and against, that we were on the verge of something good happening," Flyers coach John Stevens said.

The Flyers finally converted, exploding for five even-strength goals in 5-on-5 play. Not only did they outhit and outmuscle the hapless Hurricanes in the 6-1 win, but they also outscored them, 5-1, in even-strength play. Prior to that, the Flyers were outscored by their opponents at 5-on-5 by an 18-17 margin.

Even the best special teams in the league can't outweigh poor even-strength play.

Stevens said he didn't notice much of a change in the Flyers' approach or effort, they just executed better than they had on the myriad of chances they had in previous games.

"I think we probably created more in the Washington game [Tuesday] than we did in the Carolina game," Stevens said. "We just didn't finish them off and put them in the net. I think confidence may have a little bit to do with that."

"We've been getting all the chances," Flyers rookie James van Riemsdyk said. "We've just been a little snake-bit around the net, so it was nice to pop a few in there."

The defense played a role in five of the Flyers' six goals. Scott Hartnell deflected in a Chris Pronger shot, David Laliberte pounded in a Ryan Parent rebound, Matt Carle scored on a wrap-around and Braydon Coburn scored twice from the point.

After a three-point effort, Carle is now tied for the team lead in points (12) with Mike Richards, and was tied for third in scoring among defensemen before yesterday's games.

The Flyers got back to fundamentals and were clearly hungrier and grittier around the net. They scored the dirty goals they have been missing.

"You have to go to the net with a purpose," Stevens said.

"We just have to be a little more intense, bear down a little more, and good things will start happening," Hartnell said. "It's a matter of bearing down on our chances. We're right there."

Injury report

Forward Simon Gagne will visit with Dr. Williams Meyers at Hahneman University Hospital today to have the two small hernias that were found in his groin area last Monday examined. Meyers is the third doctor to examine Gagne. Dr. Rea Brown at Montreal General Hospital saw something different than team orthopedist Dr. Peter DeLuca. The Flyers still have not decided whether he will have surgery to repair the tears.

"We will put an end to this at some point [today]," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "[Dr. Meyers] has been kept in the loop even though Simon hasn't seen him. There are a couple different ways to go here: surgical and non-surgical. We'll have an answer [today]."

Ryan Parent did not practice yesterday at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees. He reinjured his groin in the second period of Saturday's game and did not play in the third period. That was his first game back since Oct. 19.

"We're going to shut Ryan down for the week," Holmgren said. "He is a little more sore [yesterday] than he was on [Saturday], so we're just going to shut him down."

Danny Briere seems to be closer to returning to the lineup. He tweaked his right groin early last Tuesday in Washington but played through the injury. Briere attempted to practice on Friday but couldn't because of discomfort. He received a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection into the area on Saturday, which is supposed to "enhance healing," Holmgren said.

"Danny is actually doing better," Holmgren said. "Hopefully he'll be able to skate [tomorrow]. It's not in that area [that caused him to miss 53 games last year], that's been cause for concern. It's a tough break for Danny. He had his quickness back. He was playing really well."

Slap shots

The Flyers will not have their morning skate today at the Wachovia Center, since the time of the game is 2 hours earlier than normal (5 p.m.). John Stevens said that will disrupt the players' holy pregame ritual a bit . . . Approximately 1,700 tickets remain for tonight's clash with Tampa Bay. Fans can purchase tickets for $25 with a World Series ticket stub . . . Ray Emery will start tonight, likely against former Flyer Antero Niittymaki, who has played well in his first season with the Lightning . . . Flyers scout Ilkka Sinisalo will head to Europe to watch former Flyer and free agent Peter Forsberg play for Sweden in the Karjala Cup. A Flyers team source told the Daily News in September that the Flyers had no interest in Forsberg.

I did not find JVR very impressive in his brief stint with the Phantoms at end of last season (I saw him play 4 games), but have been very impressed so far this season. He has looked really good.

Wow. John Stevens didn't see much of a change in approach or effort? Um, er, OK. What games has he been watching? It's no coincidence that the even-strength goals came after guys started going to the net -- look. I love Simon Gagne's ability to score goals, and I admire Daniel Briere's skill and creativity. But none of that matters when they don't go the front of the net, which they just don't do at even strength anymore. JVR's goal Saturday, where he walked to the front of the net...see, that takes "hockey courage." Because you might, just might, get drilled for doing that. But it's what Crosby and Malkin and Ovechkin do. To be "The Man," you have to go there. If Jeff Carter wants to snap that goalless drought, well...He needs to take the puck to the front, or plant himself there. This isn't rocket science. Five-on-five...gotta go to the net. To me, David Laliberte can stay as long as he likes, if he goes there like he did Saturday.

Hopefully this is a start for the Flyers to win with effort, desire, and a game plan. But they need to do it against the better teams in the league and not just a doormat like the Canes. The Flyers are sorely missing Knuble and for the most part no one wants to fill his role - I agree with FlyersFan88 - Carter needs to step it up and take the hits necessary to get in close and score.

The Flyers beat Carolina, one of the league's bottom teams this year, and one they always beat. When they face the Yank -- uh, Penguins -- again, then we'll see what happens.

I didn't like his consistency with UNH or his grit. I think it will still be an issue and I think he should have a chance to work on it in the AHL with a set line. He will just move down here. But he has filled in well for Knuble in front of net.

Carolina stinks. show us you can beat the Penguins Stevens and crew. Man up and take it to the good teams.

Other people are touching on it, the Flyers have shownt that they can beat the worst teams, what about the best teams?

briere has pulled a muscle in his inner thigh, not his groin. carolina has been doing horrible..so we should have easily beat them like we should. either way its a confidence booster..hopefully taken in the right way.

My pre-conception of him was that he was too soft, but what's impressed me most of all so far is his willingness to fight for the puck on the boards and to protect it. I wish sometimes he would jump to the net with more determination, but I understand that he has only played a few games and is probably concerned with his defensive positioning. Overall, I am very pleased with his play and hope that he continues to progress. If so, I think he will be a solid player for many years.

Interesting. Flyers tied for last place in their conference. I AM SHOCKED!

JVR has been a real bright spot early on. He gets involved and has great hands for his size. Inchon said we haven't shown we can beat good teams, but we did beat the Caps and Bruins and only lost to the Pens by 1. I'm still in the "give it some time" corner. This team will shake out and should take a step forward from last year.

So when Homer says "It's not in that area [that caused him to miss 53 games last year]" he really means that its the exact area that caused him to miss 53 games last year, but we're going to rush him back anyway.

Hey loser, Check your stats. The flyers are 8th place in the conference (out of 15). Every team above them has played more games. They are listed as 4th in the "division". However, again every team has played more games.

Once again, myriad is an adjective. The Flyers after all these years need a forward with questions about Gagne and Briere
