Lupul, who had the second 20-goal season of his career last season, denied an Edmonton radio report that he had agreed to a four-year extension, but he acknowledged that the sides were near a deal.
"We're still talking, but it's not finished yet," he said yesterday. "Hopefully, it'll get done early next week."
Lupul, 24, whose contract for 2008-09 is for $2.3 million, scored 20 goals and added 26 assists in 56 games with the Flyers last season. He added four goals and six assists in 17 playoff games.
Drafted seventh overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2002, Lupul was dealt to the Edmonton Oilers in the Chris Pronger trade on July 3, 2006.
Last summer, the Flyers acquired Lupul and Jason Smith for Joni Pitkanen, Geoff Sanderson, and a third-round choice in the 2009 draft.
The Flyers' prospect camp, featuring highly regarded right winger Claude Giroux, begins today at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The sessions will start with drills from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by scrimmages from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Admission is free.
