Bill Sutherland, who scored Flyers' first goal, dies at 82

Bill Sutherland, 82, an original Flyer who scored the first goal in franchise history in 1967, died Sunday, the team said Monday night.

Mr. Sutherland "helped set the standard of success and what it meant to be a Flyer," club president Paul Holmgren said in a statement. "He came to the Flyers as a veteran and played a crucial part in leading the team to a first-place finish in the West Division in the very first season."

In parts of four seasons with the Flyers, Mr. Sutherland collected 42 goals and 29 assists. He also appeared in the first 11 Stanley Cup playoff games in franchise history.

He also played for Montreal, Toronto, St. Louis, and Detroit.
