Shayne Gostisbehere out with hand injury

DETROIT - Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere missed Sunday's 1-0 overtime win in Detroit because of an injured right hand, but the Flyers are hoping he isn't sidelined too long.

General manager Ron Hextall said the hand was "a little sore" and that Gostisbehere was day to day.

Gostisbehere, who had an assist in each of his last four games, was injured when a second-period shot by Dallas' Jordie Benn hit his hand in the Flyers' 4-2 home win Saturday. He returned to the ice in the third period but was not used in late power plays.

Flyers coach Dave Hakstol claimed he didn't use Gostisbehere (16 points in 29 games) on those power plays because the Flyers "had trouble getting up ice" the previous time they had a man advantage, and it was a good time to use Mark Streit.

Hakstol said Gostisbehere's injury had nothing to do with his decision.

On Sunday, Gostisbehere said he "couldn't do too much out there" when he returned to Saturday's game. He said X-rays were negative and he was unsure if he would be able to play Wednesday in Colorado.

Michael Del Zotto, who had been a healthy scratch in the previous two games, replaced Gostisbehere on Sunday, and Streit was on the first power-play unit.

Unless they meet Detroit in the playoffs, Sunday marked the Flyers' last game at venerable (but outdated) Joe Louis Arena, which will close after the season. A new arena is being built.

Hextall's memories of The Joe aren't fond ones. "They beat us four straight," he said of the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals.

Added Hextall: "This is a good building, but obviously it's time to move on. This building has a real good feel and a home-ice advantage; the fans are right on top of the action. It's kind of an old-school building and they've had a lot of success here."

Detroit was 18-2-3-1 in its last 24 home games against the Flyers.

Goalie Michal Neuvirth and center Sean Couturier, recovering from knee injuries, did not make the trip. Both probably won't return to the lineup until after Christmas, Hextall said.

Both are expected to travel with the team to Denver and Dallas later this week, Hextall said.

Ivan Provorov (14 points) is second in scoring by NHL rookie defensemen, pending Sunday night's action. Provorov played a career-high 24 minutes, 56 seconds Sunday. . . . Anthony Stolarz notched a shutout in his second NHL start Sunday; only Robbie Moore had a shutout quicker - his 1979 debut - in Flyers history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. . . . Steve Mason has won a career-high seven straight and has moved past Pelle Lindbergh into sixth place in franchise history in career victories. . . . Taylor Leier returned to the lineup, replacing Boyd Gordon.
