Flyers send goalies Stolarz, Lyon to Phantoms

Goalies Anthony Stolarz and Alex Lyon, each of whom had an outstanding training camp, were among 10 players the Flyers sent to the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Thursday.

The Flyers have 39 players left in camp, and they will probably carry 23 when the season starts Oct. 14 in Los Angeles.

Stolarz, 22, an AHL all-star last season, and Lyon, 23, should give the Phantoms a terrific goaltending duo.

Both were extremely sharp while appearing in parts of two exhibition games. Lyon, who signed as a free agent after starring at Yale, had a 0.67 goals-against average and a .972 save percentage. Stolarz had a 1.36 GAA and a .957 save percentage.

Stolarz (6-foot-6, 232 pounds) said he and the 6-1, 198-pound Lyon have "developed a nice relationship off the ice, and I think on the ice we're going to push each other."

Last season, Stolarz had a 2.60 goals-against average and .916 save percentage with the Phantoms. He said he went into this year's camp with much more confidence.

"Going into these games, I wasn't nervous," he said of the preseason. "I was actually really excited to get going again."

The other players sent to the Phantoms on Thursday: right winger Nicolas Aube-Kubel; center Radel Fazleev; left winger Tyrell Goulbourne; defenseman Robert Hagg; center Corban Knight; left winger Danick Martel; defenseman Reece Willcox; and right winger Mark Zengerle.

World Cup Flyers

As many as four of the Flyers who competed in the World Cup could play their first preseason game Saturday night against visiting Boston.

The four who have been in camp after returning from Toronto: Jake Voracek, Michal Neuvirth, Sean Couturier, and Shayne Gostisbehere.

Glimpse of future?

The Flyers might give fans a preview of things to come by using a young defense Saturday that includes Gostisbehere, Ivan Provorov, Travis Sanheim, Phil Myers, and Sam Morin.

Breakaways

After an off day, camp resumes Friday in Voorhees at 10:30 a.m. . . . The Flyers had no update on defenseman Mark Alt, who was injured in a fight with New Jersey's Ben Thomson on Wednesday.
