Flyers Notes: Porter, who played for Hakstol in college, has shot at roster spot

Gritty left winger Chris Porter, who has been on a line with center Scott Laughton and right winger Brayden Schenn during training camp, is still in the running for a spot with the Flyers.

Gritty left winger Chris Porter, who has been on a line with center Scott Laughton and right winger Brayden Schenn during training camp, is still in the running for a spot with the Flyers.

"I'm just trying to go out there and play with speed and physicality," Porter, 31, said after practice Thursday in Voorhees.

Signed as a free agent in July, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Porter had one goal and two points in 24 games with St. Louis last season. He also played in three playoff games and had an assist.

In college, Porter played for new Flyers coach Dave Hakstol at North Dakota.

"He knows what I can do, but in the same sense, I'm trying to make a name for myself and do it on my own," Porter said.

Porter has had a "solid camp," Hakstol said. "He's brought what he brings to the table - good consistency. He's a good pro."

The Flyers, who host the Islanders on Friday at 6 p.m., have 29 players left in camp. They are expected to carry 23 when the season opens Oct. 8..

"I know I can play at this level and contribute to what they already have here," Porter said. "We have great building blocks and a great team, and I just want to add to it."

Porter, who spent six years with the Blues, said his Flyers linemates "think a little differently than I do, so it's nice to get their side of things. I'm just trying to get in on the forecheck and create a little bit of room for them."

Porter has a two-way contract and could be sent back to the Phantoms.

Breakaways

The Flyers will place Aaron Palushaj, Tim Brent, Chris Conner, Davis Drewiske, and Jason LaBarbera on waivers Friday with hopes of sending them to the Phantoms, GM Ron Hextall said. Defenseman Christian Marti, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, was placed on the injured nonroster list.
