Flyers name Kim Dillabaugh goalie coach

The Flyers finally made it official Friday and named Kim Dillabaugh as their goalie coach, as was reported last week.

Dillabaugh, 37, spent eight seasons with Los Angeles, where he worked in a goaltender-development role for the club. Dillabaugh worked with Flyers general manager Ron Hextall when he was an assistant GM with the Kings.

Hextall called his latest hire a "highly dedicated and intelligent" coach who has a "proven track record."

Dillabaugh, who never played in the NHL, contributed to the development of Jonathan Quick, Jonathan Bernier, and Martin Jones, while also working with goaltenders at the club's American Hockey League affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, and prospects playing elsewhere in professional and amateur hockey.

The Kings won two Stanley Cups while Dillabaugh worked in Los Angeles.

Dillabaugh will have Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth as his goalies. Mason is coming off a career season in which he was among the league leaders in save percentage (.928) and goals-against average (2.25), but was limited to 51 games because of injuries.

"I'm extremely excited to work with Dilly," Mason said. "We've had a few conversations to make sure we're on the same page."

The Flyers and goalie coach Jeff Reese mutually parted ways late last season. Reese has since been hired by the Dallas Stars.

Hextall has steadfastly refused to comment on the reason Reese and the team parted ways, hinting it involved a personal matter.

Despite Mason's superb season, the Flyers finished tied for 21st in the 30-team NHL with a 2.72 goals-against average. The addition of Neuvirth may help the team improve on its defensive numbers.

Provorov, McDonald sign

Defenseman Ivan Provorov, selected seventh overall in the recent draft, signed an entry-level deal Friday. Provorov, 18, will have a chance to make the team in training camp.

In a move that figures to bolster their depth with the AHL Phantoms, the Flyers signed 6-foot-2, 219-pound right winger Colin McDonald to a one-year, two-way contract.

McDonald, 30, spent the last three seasons in the Islanders' organization. He spent time in the NHL and AHL last season, collecting two goals and eight points in 18 games with the Isles, and 14 goals and 35 points in 40 games with AHL Bridgeport.

In 144 NHL games with the Islanders, Pittsburgh, and Edmonton, McDonald has 18 goals and 44 points. He was drafted in the second round (51st overall) by Edmonton in 2003 and played four seasons at Providence College.
