Flyers will get better draft pick from Blackhawks

As far as the Flyers are concerned, the playoffs have produced mixed results regarding some of their future draft picks.

The good news: The Flyers have benefited from Chicago's reaching the Western Conference finals.

The bad news: The draft pick the Flyers acquired from Tampa Bay has been pushed to late in the first round because the Lightning have reached the Eastern Conference final.

The Flyers own Tampa Bay's first pick in the June draft, a selection they acquired as part of the Braydon Coburn deal. In 13 playoff games, Coburn is minus-6, but he did have the winning goal in Game 7 against Detroit.

The first-round pick will now be 27, 28, 29, or 30, depending on where the Lightning finish. The pick could have been No. 22 in a best-case scenario for the Flyers.

The Flyers will receive the 27th selection only if Tampa Bay loses in the conference final and Chicago advances to the Stanley Cup Finals. If Tampa Bay loses and Anaheim wins in the West, the Flyers would get the 28th pick.

The Flyers, who also have the draft's seventh overall pick this year, want the Blackhawks to go as far as possible. On Feb. 27, they traded defenseman Kimmo Timonen to Chicago for a second-round pick this June along with a conditional fourth-round selection next year.

The conditional pick has turned into a third-rounder because the Blackhawks have won two playoff rounds and Timonen has played in at least half of their games.

That pick becomes a second-rounder if Chicago wins another round and Timonen plays half the games.
