Rangers clinch 2d in Metropolitan Division

The N.Y. Rangers clinched second place in the Metropoltan Division and home-ice advantage in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by defeating Buffalo, 2-1, on Thursday, coupled with the Flyers 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay.

Rick Nash scored the winning goal with 1:42 left in regulation at Madison Square Garden. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 23 shots.

2d concussion suit filed

Nine former players have sued the NHL over concussions, saying the league subjects its players to "devastating and long-term" health consequences by failing to warn players of the risks and consequences of head trauma.

Among the players are former all-star defenseman Brad Maxwell and Jack Carlson, whose brothers starred in the film Slapshot.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Manhattan late Wednesday, months after a similar suit was filed by 10 former NHL players in Washington. Both lawsuits seek unspecified damages, along with a medical monitoring program to care for former and current NHL players.

A request for comment from an NHL spokesman was not returned.

Shanahan to head Leafs?

NHL director of player safety Brendan Shanahan will join the Toronto Maple Leafs as an executive in the next few days, according to multiple reports.

Shanahan, 45, is likely to become the president of the Maple Leafs, who missed the playoffs for the eighth time in the last nine seasons. His duties would extend beyond hockey operations to include business and league matters, the Toronto Star reported.
