Carolina routs Florida, 5-1

Riley Nash and Alexander Semin scored 87 seconds apart early in the Carolina Hurricanes' 5-1 rout of the Florida Panthers on Friday night.

Florida goalie Tim Thomas stopped just 10 of the 14 shots he faced and was pulled with 15 minutes, 24 seconds left in the second.

Rangers 4, Penguins 3 - Brad Richards scored the decisive goal in a shootout to lift New York over host Pittsburgh.

Devils 2, Oilers 1 - Defenseman John Merrill scored his first NHL goal 2:34 into overtime, and New Jersey s defeated visiting Edmonton. Cory Schneider made 19 saves.

Stroke sidelines Letang

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will be out for six-plus weeks after having a stroke.

Penguins general manager Ray Shero announced that Letang had a stroke last week.

Shero said Letang will be treated with blood thinners, adding the stroke is not expected to threaten his career.


Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin was fined $5,000 for hitting Vancouver Canucks forward Pascal Pelletier with the butt end of his stick during Thursday's game. - AP
