Sharp's hat trick lifts Blackhawks over Devils

Patrick Sharp scored three goals and the Chicago Blackhawks avoided a rare second straight loss with a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night in Newark. Sharp scored his 25th of the season with less than two minutes to play after the Devils pulled to 4-3.

Sidney Crosby scored his 23d goal of the season as the host Pittsburgh Penguins ripped the New York Rangers, 5-2.

Classic ratings

The Winter Classic matched the highest TV rating for a regular-season NHL game in 39 years. The Toronto Maple Leafs' 3-2 shootout win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday earned a 2.5 rating, which NBC said tied the 2009 New Year's Day game between Detroit and the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field.

The rating was up 19 percent from the last Winter Classic, in 2012 between the New York Rangers and Flyers.
