TORONTO - For the last five seasons, Flyers goaltending coach Jeff Reese has carefully tracked Steve Mason. Poring over hours of highlights, Reese broke down a good portion of Mason's starts with the Blue Jackets, beginning with his Calder Trophy season in 2008-09.

Mason, 24, was acquired from Columbus before Wednesday's trade deadline in exchange for Michael Leighton and a third-round pick. Reese had a lot to do with that.

Mason has fallen so far from that rookie of the year season that it's easy to forget that he was one of only five goalies invited to Canada's Olympic tryout camp in 2010, when he was 21. Martin Brodeur, Marc-Andre Fleury, Roberto Luongo and Cam Ward were the others, even leaving the Canadiens' Carey Price off the list.

"I don't think you can find many guys with his size who can move that well, recover that quickly," Reese said Thursday. "I'm really excited about getting him. I think it was a confidence issue with him. He was beaten down. It's time to start enjoying the game again."

Reese, who shares the same agent as Mason, believes Mason has a unique advantage. Mason is only the second righthanded-catching goaltender in Flyers history, other than Stephane Beauregard (16 games in 1992-93). J-S Aubin was also a right-catching netminder for the Flyers, but he only appeared in a preseason game.

Less than 10 percent of the NHL's goaltenders catch with their right hand. Reese has never worked with one, though he played against the most famous: Grant Fuhr. Tom Barrasso, Jose Theodore, Rick DiPietro and Tomas Vokoun are some of the other righties.

"I think it's a huge advantage," Reese said. "It provides a different look for shooters. I think sometimes when they enter the zone, they are programmed to shoot in a specific direction - mostly high and blocker side."

Mason could start his first game as a Flyer on Saturday in Winnipeg. He took shots from scratches Tye McGinn and Kurtis Foster at the pregame skate at Air Canada Centre before Ilya Bryzgalov made his 21st consecutive start Thursday night.

Should the Flyers bring back Ilya Bryzgalov next season?
    Yes.
    No.

Mason's agent, Anton Thun, told the Daily News that he expects a 1-year contract extension to be completed within the next week for less money than he currently makes. Mason is a pending restricted free agent with a $2.9 million salary cap hit. Look for a deal in the $2 million range.

In the meantime, Reese - one of the game's best teachers - will begin to tweak Mason's potential-filled style.

"I'm here to become the goalie that I know I can be," Mason said. "I'm leaving whatever's happened in the past there. You can tell yourself that you're hitting the reset button each season [in Columbus], but . . . the tires are spinning and you're not going anywhere. I'm fully prepared to put the work in."

    Rinaldo out

The Flyers' long injury list grew a bit longer Thursday, with the addition of forward Zac Rinaldo. Rinaldo will be out indefinitely with a left high ankle sprain, suffered in the second period of Wednesday's win over Montreal. Danny Briere (concussion), Andrej Meszaros (shoulder) and Braydon Coburn (shoulder) are all also out indefinitely. Paul Holmgren officially declared this week that Max Talbot's season is over, thanks to a broken left leg. Bruiser Jay Rosehill, acquired in a minor trade Monday from Anaheim, made his Flyers debut Thursday. Rosehill had played all 72 of his career NHL games for the Maple Leafs. It took him all of 11 minutes and 42 seconds to notch his first fight in a Flyers uniform, when he dropped the gloves with Colton Orr.

    'JVR' revisited

When the Flyers last visited hockey's nerve center in February, former Flyer James van Riemsdyk offered a poignant referendum on his controversial summer swap for Luke Schenn.

"JVR" netted a breakaway goal, helping Toronto to a 5-2 win. It was his eighth goal in the first 13 games of the season, as he filled in for injured forward Joffrey Lupul on the first line with Phil Kessel. He added another six goals in the next 13 games but has gone rather quiet since, with Lupul back in the lineup.

Van Riemsdyk's goal Thursday night in the Flyers' 5-3 win was his first in the last 11 games, but he hasn't really felt the pressure with players like Lupul and Nazem Kadri picking up the slack and pushing the Leafs toward their first playoff berth since 2004.

"It's been a while," JVR said with a grin Thursday. "Things haven't come as easy for me lately. That's going to happen. Chris Pronger told me during my rookie year that when you're not scoring offensively, you've got to be contributing in other ways. That was a good lesson. I think I've been able to do that, not turning pucks over. I'm trying to be a presence in other ways."

It was interesting that JVR was backsliding to his old ways for a while. His game is rushing the net but ha doesn't always like to pay the price. Same old, same old.

I think Reese has done wonders for Bob and will hopefully do the same with Mason. Even Bryz has become an average puckhandler and if you remember back to his first few games with our team, it was nightmarish.

I bet Reese tries to work with Bryz, using his body more to cut down angles and stay square. There was always a lot going on with him and now he seems more relaxed and poised in net. The problem is, old habits die hard, and he lets in the softies because he is out of position.

Not smart to pay 2 goalies a total of $8 million with the salary cap going down to 64.

Jeff Reese has been a good goaltending coach with the Flyers. As always, it's ridiculous how this fanbase looks at this franchise, like it's staffed by morons and filled with incompetence. It isn't. The haters just can't stand to acknowledge that their soul-sucking negativity sours rational observation about anything.

Here are some of the Flyers goaltenders who, miracle of miracles, just happened to have good years while Jeff Reese was ruining their careers:
      2007/2008: Martin Biron: 30-20-9, 2.59 GAA, .918 SVpct
      2008/2009: Martin Biron: 29-19-5, 2.76 GAA, .915 SVpct
2009/2010: Ray Emery: 16-11-1, 2.64 GAA, .905 SVpct (3 shutouts, injured hip ended year)
      2009/2010: Michael Leighton: 16-5-2, 2.48 GAA, .918 SVpct
      2010/2011: Sergei Bobrovsky: 28-13-8, 2.59 GAA, .918 SVpct
      2011/2012: Ilya Brzgalov: 33-16-7, 2.48 GAA, .909 SVpct

No coach, player or organization is perfect. But what imbecile looks at that body of work and says that Jeff Reese working with a goaltender is a problem? Seriously? What idiot thinks that's true?

What lunatic thinks that Jeff Reese has zero chance, no chance at all, of maybe, just maybe, helping Steve Mason?

      Well? What idiot thinks that?

Well put FB88. Also P Even, don't expect that to happen. You dont pick up a Steve Mason unless you plan on getting rid of Bryz. He's making way too much money. Sign Mason for 1.5 ish, drop Bryz and now you have money to go get some D. Mason may surprise us. He was awesome in his rookie season and it may have been the lights on him that made him a 20 year old that looked at the fame before the game. The change of scenery may be all he needed.

I'm not drinking the cool-aid on this guy. Flyers need to go out and get Bernier from LA. We can't afford to put another season in the hands of a project. I'll be fine with Mason as a backup, but if they make him the starter next year we are in BIG trouble.

Bryz is my starter and in the midst of a winning streak I am not changing horses - the new kid can be a back up - Bryz is back next year more mature, more comfortable with our impatient fans and media and finally, finally in a regular routine - his first year was a media circus right through the winter classic after it was over he was the player of the month in March - this season his second is also under extraordinary circumstances - compressed schedule without a legitimate back up - that's been changed but only as of this moment. Next year Mason will have a chance and maybe even win the job with stellar Brouder like play but until he does Bryz stays the number one - Bryz deserves a third season (in my opinion it would be his real first season - no hoopla and finally an ordinary hockey year) with a regular schedule and a competent back up to spell him (which he hasn't had) Goalies need to get in a groove - patience is what our problem has been - look what Emry is doing for Chicago. Maybe together they restructure Bryz's contract on the pitch they want to buy him some all star defensmen - it doesn't have to an either or scenario. After the Toronto announcers mocked and trashed him because how dare we be winning after two periods I hope he plays like a monster the rest of the year and into the playoffs. Any true Flyer fan would feel the same way. He's our guy right now get behind him. As an aside in two years even low information fans are going to be pumped we have the Schen Brothers on our team - they even look like the Hansonsl! FlyerBacker88 great post - what a bunch of whiners some of the fans are - its embarrassing.
