TORONTO - Centers Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier have suffered through sophomore slumps, but they played major roles Thursday as the resilient Flyers outlasted the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-3, at the Air Canada Centre and increased their season-best winning streak to four games.

"We're both trying to step up," Schenn said after the Flyers climbed to within two points of the eighth-place Rangers in the Eastern Conference. "We're getting the opportunity, playing on the power play and playing with good players. We need secondary scoring. It's not just Claude Giroux. We have to chip in."

The victory may have been costly. Kimmo Timonen, one of the few defensemen left standing from the beginning of the season, left the game with an unspecified injury in the third period. Timonen limped badly out of the Flyers' locker room and refused to answer questions.

The Flyers winning streak has coincided with the loss of four of their top defensemen and forwards Danny Briere and Max Talbot, all of whom are injured.

"I think guys are doing well who may not have gotten the opportunity," said Luke Schenn, who iced the win with an empty-net goal and had six hits and four blocked shots. "Maybe there's not as much skill in the lineup, but everyone seems to be working real hard and playing together and playing a lot smarter."

"I really like the way we're playing right now," coach Peter Laviolette said. "You could just tell we were going to work hard tonight, and the new guys [Jay Rosehill and Adam Hall] who came in tonight were terrific in that regard."

Couturier, who on Wednesday scored his first goal in 28 games, set up a pair of goals - Jake Voracek's 16th and Rosehill's first in his Flyers debut.

Brayden Schenn scored his first goal since Feb. 23, ending a 16-game drought. He intercepted Nikolai Kulemin's clearing pass in Toronto's end and his shot trickled off goalie James Reimer 54 seconds into the second period to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead.

With 4 minutes, 7 seconds left in the second, Couturier's shot from above the left circle glanced off Rosehill and into the net to put the Flyers ahead, 4-2.

Should the Flyers bring back Ilya Bryzgalov next season?
    Yes.
    No.

Former Flyer James van Riemsdyk snapped a 10-game goal-scoring funk with 13:46 left to get the Maple Leafs to within 4-3. But the Flyers held on.

Luke Schenn (plus-3), who was acquired for van Riemsdyk, scored the empty-netter with 17 seconds left, giving the Flyers a 5-12-1 road record.

Couturier centered a line with Rosehill and Hall, both in their Flyers debuts, helping end the Leafs' four-game winning streak.

Hall and Rosehill crunched Joffrey Lupul with an early check that caused the Maple Leafs' star to miss almost the entire game with an undisclosed injury.

Rosehill, a former Maple Leaf, also won a first-period fight with Toronto tough guy Colton Orr. Before being acquired for Harry Zolnierczyk earlier in the week, Rosehill spent the entire season playing for Anaheim's minor-league team in Norfolk.

"I was just trying to come in here and make an impact and have a good start, and I'm pretty happy the way it went. It's a big win," Rosehill said.

Remove all the knives and guns from your mother's house and go see a psychiatrist or psychologist. You're a mass murderer waiting to happen. This much anger isn't normal. This is about pucks in a net. Seek help.

Actually a fun game to watch - both teams finishing their checks like it was a playoff game. We as fans would be commenting on who we wanted to match up against in the first round had this team shown this type of effort the first 30 games instead of hoping to squeek in.

Agree with your comments on Bryz, Nitro. I bet he averages one (at least) lousy goal given up per game. If they can make it to the playoffs he will certainly need to be better, period. To make a deep run the goalie not only has to keep those bad, deflating goals from going in, but needs to steal a game or 3. i for one, am not convinced that he can be at worst solid and at times spectacular for two straight months.

Do I want them to lose for a lottery pick - no, but I'm glad they waited until it was too late for Homey to be a buyer (a Jagr or Gaborik type deal) at the trade deadline.
Do I think they are a legitimate contender-no, but they are starting to warm up and if young players get it going and we get some guys healthy again they could surprise me.

      Please surprise me...

      Good game tonight.

      One complaint. Bryzgalov, knelt in
the crease, and did nothing while
JvR roofed one over his shoulder.
Last night, he ducked his head on
      one goal. WTF?

Great move by Gm Homer getting Rosehill. He fights, wins, scores, and he will be their for the Captain. Playoffs here we go. Phillies stink.

I agree with the majority of the comments here. Flyers are playing with more heart, in spite of all the injuries. But, maybe that's not a huge surprise since the only injured guy who was playing well was Talbot. The fact that they're doing better with this ragtag defense corps says that the guys we lost aren't all that good. Don't think we can afford to lose Kimmo for any length of time, though. I agree that they can still make the playoffs but, with Bryz, their ceiling is probably the second round. They're never going to make a serious run with him in goal.

Now give Bryz a game or two off and let's see what Steve Mason is capable of.

Hey phillyBoy, what the hell are you smoking by saying you salute your fellow Flyer fans for their team support...you're dillusional Boy, as just 4 days ago these "fellow fans" of yours were screaming to clean house.... By the way, I know you'll be routing for those Pens tonight. I on the other hand will be pulling for the Rangers just for you... For one night, and one night only, I'm a Ranger fan... Go Rangers! ( Pens have such a nice cushion to afford me such a luxury ).

I never smoked troll, but I do have the brain cells you're clearly missing.

Spelling, ever hear that word? "Dillusional" you say? You will be "routing" for the Rangers?

Not only are you a notorious Penqueen troll on these boards, but I have to add idiot and moronic as well to your list of traits, including no life, and mommy basement dweller. Then again, don't the two go hand in hand?

How is Cindy doing? Karma, you reap what you sow.

You're so pathetic it isn't worth the time to spell out your rare title to most pathetic poster at Philly.com

Odds are still pretty long about making the playoffs...and for the second consecutive night there was a head shaking goal on Bryz. What was he doing on JVR's flip shot over his shoulder? Do you think James knows the book on his old teammate? He didn't challenge...he didn't poke...he didn't stand his ground...he just went to his knees and left the top half of the net wide open. I've never seen another goalie like him in the NHL who occasionally looks like he has no idea what to do in a given situation. Often, it involves a close it play at the net, a scramble where he just seems passive, hesitant and somewhat clueless.

You're wrong Jack... Would love to see playoff rematch with Pens and Flyers... Would prove to the hockey Gods what a fluke last year was... Although, if you think about it, Flyers would have home ice advantage in that scenario...
