Another bad break for Flyers' JVR

JAMES VAN RIEMSDYK'S season is not getting any easier.

In the first period of last night's game against the Islanders, van Riemsdyk blocked a Milan Jurcina blast from the point and broke a bone in his left foot, according to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.

Originally, van Riemsdyk tried to remain on the bench to fight through the pain but soon left to get X-rays.

For now, the Flyers have offered no timetable for his return. He will be re-evaluated by Dr. Steven Raikin today.

Howard Eskin, of 94.1-WIP and NBC10, reported that van Riemsdyk will miss 6 to 8 weeks. Holmgren was not available to provide a further update after the Flyers' 6-3 victory.

"JVR's first blocked shot and it was a broken foot," Scott Hartnell joked. "I feel bad for the guy. It's frustrating, obviously. I think he was finally getting his timing back from his concussion.

"You look for a blessing in disguise, maybe he will be rested and healthy come playoff time."

Van Riemsdyk, 23, just returned to the lineup on Feb. 18 after missing 15 straight games with a concussion. Previously, he missed five games in December with a torn muscle in his abdominal region. Also, he has been hampered by a hip injury for the better part of the season.

The former No. 2 overall pick has just 11 goals and 13 assists since signing a 6-year, $25.5 million contract extension last summer.

Van Riemsdyk has just three goals and five assists in the 24 games he's played since Nov. 21.
