Lindros to play in Flyers-Rangers alumni game at Citizens Bank Park

MONTREAL - Eric Lindros will be back in Philadelphia on Dec. 31.

More than a decade after his disastrous departure from the Flyers, the "Big E" said he will put aside his differences with the organization to return for an alumni game against the New York Rangers on Dec. 31 at Citizens Bank Park.

The alumni game will be 2 days before the Flyers and Rangers play in the Winter Classic.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren told ESPN.com that the team is hoping to reunite the LCB line of Reggie Leach, Bobby Clarke and Bill Barber.

There were rumblings about Lindros' return for weeks, but the former Flyers captain confirmed the rumors yesterday to a Toronto radio station. The Flyers are trying to reunite one of their most famous lines, the "Legion of Doom," with Lindros, John LeClair and Mikael Renberg. LeClair has made a commitment; there is no confirmation on Renberg's participation.

"Johnny, Mikael and I are trying to put something together for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and we'll probably announce something in the next little bit," Lindros told the Brady and Lang morning show on Toronto's Fan 590. "[We want] to try to raise some money for them and try to incorporate that into the event."

In a recent interview with the Hockey Guys website, Lindros said he had been contacted a few weeks earlier by Holmgren about participating in the game. Given his legendary disagreements with the Flyers, it appeared that Lindros was the biggest question mark heading into the game.

"Paul Holmgren gave me a shout about a month-and-a-half ago and we talked back and forth a little bit, and I was real happy to hear his voice and get the invitation," said Lindros, who was traded from the Flyers to the Rangers in 2001. "I told him that I would fly down and have some fun."

In the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season, when Lindros captured the Hart Trophy as league MVP, the Legion of Doom combined for an astonishing 181 points in only 48 games.

There has been no word on whether the Rangers can persuade Wayne Gretzky to participate in the game.
