Capital punished
A surprised Alex Ovechkin was ejected for boarding in the third period, but that didn't stop the Washington Capitals from beating the Buffalo Sabres, 2-0, on Wednesday.
The Capitals superstar drew a major for boarding and a game misconduct when he checked Buffalo's Patrick Kaleta into the boards with his shoulder.
"I just go take a hit and he just fell into the boards," Ovechkin said. "Max, it's got to be two minutes."
"You lose the most prolific scorer on the planet Earth, which is tough," Washington defenseman Brian Pothier said. "But you have to kill a five-minute penalty. As Ovie's skating off the ice, we're telling him, 'We've got this one for you.' "
Lupul ailing
The back problems that are keeping former Flyer Joffrey Lupul out of the Anaheim Ducks' lineup are something the winger has battled all season, as it turns out.
As he sat for the third consecutive game Wednesday, Lupul said the spasms that initially flared near the end of training camp have not really subsided but became too much to deal with after last week's game against Tampa Bay.
"It's basically just been bothering me the entire time," he said.
