Trapezoids remain

NHL general managers are keeping trapezoids behind the nets, and will discuss a potential new rule aimed at reducing hits to the head.

On the first day of the GM meetings yesterday in Toronto, the group decided to stick with the trapezoid rule that limits where goalies can play the puck. The trapezoid rule was introduced as part of a package of changes coming out of the NHL lockout in 2005.

Head shots will be examined today.

Comeback 'kids'

Interest in free-agent defenseman Chris Chelios is picking up, and several clubs are checking in on oft-injured forward Peter Forsberg, who could be readying for a comeback.

Chelios, 47, is playing with the AHL's Chicago Wolves.

Forsberg, 36, played three games for his native Sweden in the recent Karjala Cup. His agent chatted with GMs yesterday in Toronto. The Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, and Flyers have shown interest.

"A healthy Peter Forsberg, who wouldn't be interested?" Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said of the former Flyer.

Noteworthy

Goalie Roberto Luongo returned to the roster for Vancouver's game last night in St. Louis after missing two weeks with a broken rib. . . . Veteran Sabres forward Adam Mair cleared waivers and will stay in Buffalo.

Hey, the Flyers have no money against the cap, now that over 3 million of it is being paid to players not on the roster; so it is the perfect time for them to handcuff themselves, waive good young players and sign another aging veteran. Make sure Clarke appears at the news conference. (iao).

Having interest is a far cry from taking action. Glad to hear the trapezoid is sticking around...hopefully they can fill it with advertising next season. Bettman is awful.
