Tim Thomas stopped 27 shots for his second shutout of the season, and Sidney Crosby was held without a point for the fifth straight game as the Boston Bruins beat the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins last night, 3-0.

Matt Hunwick backhanded a rebound under the crossbar, then had to wait 77 seconds for a whistle so officials could consult a video replay and give Boston the goal. Mark Recchi had the 900th assist of his career on Daniel Paille's first goal with the Bruins, and Patrice Bergeron added a shorthanded empty-netter as Boston won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

"It's just one of those things where [Crosby's] in a rut right now," Recchi, a former teammate, said. "It won't be very long he'll be in it, I know that. He's a great player and when they break out, they can go the opposite way, and everything they touch turns to goals."

Pittsburgh has not scored in 149 minutes, 9 seconds, and has lost three straight games.

In other games:

* At Toronto, Mikko Koivu scored one goal and assisted on two others in the second period as the Minnesota Wild ended the Maple Leafs' two-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory.

* At Montreal, Miikka Kiprusoff had 25 saves in his first shutout of the season and Jarome Iginla extended his goal-scoring streak to four games, leading the Calgary Flames to a 1-0 victory over the Canadiens.

* At St. Louis, David Perron scored three goals, two in a span of 1:54 during the first period, and Brad Boyes added a goal and three assists to lead the Blues to a 6-1 victory over Vancouver.

* At Ottawa, shootout goals by Alexei Kovalev and Jason Spezza gave the Senators a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Pascal Leclaire had 31 saves for Ottawa.

* At San Jose, Dan Boyle's goal with 1 minute left lifted the Sharks over Nashville, 4-3.

Noteworthy

* NHL general managers meeting in Toronto have decided to keep the trapezoids behind the nets, which limits the area where goalies can play the puck, and will discuss potential new rules aimed at reducing hits to the head today.

* Blackhawks center Dave Bolland had surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back, and will be out for 3 to 4 months.
