Ovechkin: Just kidding
Alex Ovechkin said he was joking when he told a reporter over the weekend that he could be out for more than a month.The Washington Capitals star practiced lightly yesterday and said he would actually miss about a week.
He has not played since leaving a Nov. 1 game against Columbus with what the team called an upper body injury. Ovechkin appeared to hurt his left shoulder or left arm during a second-period scrum.
Sykora sidelined
Minnesota Wild right wing Petr Sykora suffered a concussion and is out indefinitely.Wild defenseman Kim Johnsson has been cleared to play after missing the last seven games with an upper body injury.
'Canes sign Legace
Carolina is turning to veteran goalie Manny Legace to help replace the injured Cam Ward.The Hurricanes signed Legace, who had been playing for the AHL's Chicago Wolves, to a one-year contract that will pay him $500,000 at the NHL level, or $105,000 if he is sent to the minors.
The 36-year-old has a career NHL record of 177-92-36.
Ward will be out for up to four weeks after suffering a cut to his leg Saturday in Columbus.

The NHL suspended Calgary forward Curtis Glencross for three games for a high hit against Chris Drury of the New York Rangers on Saturday. . . . The Buffalo Sabres placed veteran forward Adam Mair on waivers. . . . The Anaheim Ducks sent goalie Justin Pogge to the minors, clearing the way for Jean-Sebastien Giguere's return from a groin injury that had kept him out since Oct. 24.
