Martinek out

Oft-injured New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek is out for the season with a knee injury.

The 33-year-old Martinek tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Friday night in the third period of a 2-1 loss at New Jersey, the Islanders said yesterday.

He was helped off the ice with about 5 minutes, 45 seconds to play after he was hit hard against the boards in front of the Devils' bench by Zach Parise.

The Islanders were also without captain Doug Weight in their home game against Atlanta last night. The 38-year-old center is expected to miss a week after sustaining an undisclosed upper-body injury.

Weight has played in only 11 games because of an early-season groin injury and a bout with the swine flu.

Foreign affairs

Sergei Zinoviev scored twice to help Russia beat Sweden, 4-1, in the second round of the four-nation Karjala Cup in Helsinki, Finland. The loss for Sweden came during former Flyer Peter Forsberg's 100th game for the national team.

Forsberg is playing in his first international tournament since setting up the winning goal in the 2006 Olympic final against Finland.

In the game against the Russians, Forsberg created a number of chances with his passing, but Russia's Zinoviev scored early in the first period.

Forsberg, a former NHL MVP and two-time Stanley Cup winner, has been bothered by a persistent foot injury. He hasn't ruled out playing in the Vancouver Olympics.
