Things are falling into place for the New Jersey Devils.

The team is winning despite injuries, the power play is warming up, Patrik Elias is back in the lineup and backup goalie Yann Danis is showing he can give Martin Brodeur a day off without causing problems.

Danis made 23 saves and stopped four in-close attempts in the third period against his former Islanders teammates, helping the Devils post their fourth straight win, 2-1, over New York last night in Newark, N.J.

"Everytime I get to play I want to get the win, but to win against those guys makes it a little more special," said Danis, who signed as a free agent after spending last season with the Islanders. "You always want to play well against your former team."

Brian Rolston and defenseman Cory Murphy scored as New Jersey posted its 10th win in 12 games.

In other games:

* At Raleigh, N.C., in a battle of the league's two worst teams, Jason Blake scored on a power play with 8:24 left and Jonas Gustavsson had 34 saves to help the Toronto Maple Leafs win for just the second time in 14 games, 3-2, over the Carolina Hurricanes, who have now two wins in 15 games.

* At Sunrise, Fla., Jose Theodore stopped 28 shots, Brian Pothier had a goal and two assists and the Washington Capitals beat the Florida Panthers, 4-1.

* At Denver, Chris Stewart's goal in the eighth round of a shootout gave the Colorado Avalanche a 4-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

* At Dallas, Brad Richards and Brenden Morrow scored and Marty Turco had 32 saves in the Stars' 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks.

Noteworthy

* Tampa Bay rookie defenseman Victor Hedman will not be in the lineup for tonight's game with Montreal following a body check during Thursday's game with Ottawa that left him flattened on the ice. The 18-year-old native of Sweden, the second overall pick in June's draft, was helped off ice and did not return to the game.
