David Laliberte's flashy NHL debut, Braydon Coburn's first two-goal game of his career, and Ray Emery's solid goaltending highlighted the Flyers' 6-1 win over sad-sack Carolina on Saturday - and overshadowed Blair Betts' impressive return.

After missing seven games because of a dislocated right shoulder, the veteran center was dominant in the face-off circle - he won 13 of 18 draws - and in killing penalties.

Teamed with Ian Laperriere, Betts helped the Flyers kill all five Carolina power plays.

"You want to have guys on third and fourth lines that can be really good role players," coach John Stevens said after yesterday's practice in Voorhees, "and Betts and Lappy willed themselves in front of shots and blocked shots - and it really revs up guys on your team when you see guys paying the price like they do."

With Betts in the lineup, the Flyers are 4-0 and have killed 23 of 25 penalties (92 percent).

Without him, they are 2-4-1 and have killed 22 of 27 penalties (81.5 percent).

Briere improved. Danny Briere, who didn't play Saturday because of an injured muscle underneath his quad, is making progress and may return Friday against his former team, Buffalo.

The Flyers had originally announced it was a groin injury, but they now say it is below his quad - and not related to his groin problems that forced him to miss most of last season.

Gagne decision delayed. For the third straight day, a decision on how to treat Simon Gagne's two hernias was delayed. Gagne has had conflicting advice from two doctors on whether surgery should be performed - and he is now seeking advice from a third doctor. He will be examined by William Meyers today.

"And then we can put this to an end," general manager Paul Holmgren said.

Parent sidelined. Defenseman Ryan Parent, who had missed three games with a groin strain, returned to action and re-aggravated the injury in the second period Saturday. He will be sidelined for a week, Holmgren said. That means he won't play tonight against Tampa Bay or Friday in Buffalo. Ole-Kristian Tollefsen figures to take his spot.

Breakaways. Tonight's game starts at 5 p.m., two hours earlier than originally scheduled. The change was made to alleviate some of the traffic crunch since the Phillies will play the Yankees at Citizens Bank Park at 7:57 p. m. ... Laliberte (goal, assist) filled in admirably for Briere vs. Carolina. "David's kind of a neat story, the way he's moved up the ladder in the organization," Holmgren said. Stevens was impressed with Laliberte's poise. "He didn't seem awed," he said. Laliberte will probably play on a line with Jeff Carter and James van Riemsdyk tonight. . . . Emery, who had 39 saves in Saturday's 6-1 win, will make his 11th start in 12 games when the Flyers meet visiting Tampa tonight. Emery has a 2.46 goals-against average and .915 save percentage. . . . Former Flyer goalie Antero Niittymaki (2.22 GAA, .931 save percentage) has excelled for the Lightning, but coach Rick Tocchet has decided to start Mike Smith (3.17 GAA, .893) tonight. About 1,700 tickets remain for the game. . . . Tampa's Steven Stamkos has a goal in five straight games, and Martin St. Louis has scored a point in all 11 games. . . . The Flyers (6-4-1) were 4-4-3 at a corresponding point last season.

See, I really like the Flyers' fourth line of Carcillo-Betts-Laperriere. Those guys have been awesome together, and Betts/Laperriere on the PK has been SWEET. Gotta get this Gagne thing fixed, and Jeff Carter and Claude Giroux scoring goals. If we do that...man, there's good things ahead for this team. You can kinda see it.

Given the Flyers' history of lying about injuries, there are two points to be made. First, the only muscles running below the four major muscles of the thigh (the "quads") ALL attach on the pubic bone or the inner arc of the hip which, to any honest male on the street, would be referred to as the groin. If Briere has an injured muscle in his thigh that is not part of his quad aggregate, then he has a groin injury. Second, given Briere, now Parent, of course Gagne and the collective history; again we have another daily journalistic episode that refuses to investigate and discuss the Flyers' repetitive problems with the same injuries, and what that implies about the competence of their training and medical staffs. So the story now is growing: Part One, Flyers' injury history and incompetence in dealing with it; Part Two, local media's refusal to engage and cover Part One. I am Oppressed.

Glad to see Nitty doing well. I felt he never got a fair shot last year. As soon as he got the #1 tag he got sick and they went with Biron again. Emery has been great. Would have liked to see Nitty stay but glad he's getting his shot.

Flyers have a serious problem with groin / ab injuries: Either it's the ice, the training facility, the trainer, or the workout routines. There is no way that this many players get the same injury over and over again, on the same team, year after year.

I have said it before and will say it again....Blair Betts was a steal. Worth twice the money than he is getting.

I think the issue with the groin injuries is just a string of bad luck. In the last year, it's really been only three players that had groin issues, so the problem isn't that widespread. Actually, Gagne's latest groin injury came in the first Olympic workout for Team Canada, so I don't think it's fair to blame the Flyers for that. As far as the 4th line is concerned, I agree with FlyersFan88. They've been phenomenal. Last year in the playoffs, they didn't really have a fourth line that could control the puck, keep the opposition pinned in their own end, and create energy. It's also going to be crucial for them to be able to continue eating PK minutes because it will help keep Carter and Richards fresh.
