When Randy Jones went to Nashville for hip surgery he was expecting to undergo an extensive series of repairs to his labrum, cartilage and ligaments. He also was supposed to have the bone shaved.
That would have resulted in the Flyers' defenseman being out 14 to 16 weeks.
"I woke up after I had it done and the doctor came in and told me what he had to do and what he didn't do," said Jones, who is with the team on this one-game trip. "There was a procedure that he thought they were going to have to do but in the end didn't have to, and that was what was going to keep me out for an extra month. I was definitetly pleased that they didn't have to go in and fix that."
With 2 weeks post-surgery gone, Jones is rehabbing and talking about skating again.
"It feels pretty good and it's getting better every day," he said. "It will probably be another 5 or 6 weeks before I'm playing again and probably another 2 weeks before I'm skating. It will probably take me 2 to 3 weeks conditioning-wise to get back into it."
Like anyone else who was watching the Phillies and Tampa Bay struggle to play baseball amid a developing East Coast storm, one Flyer was shaking his head at the fate of the home team when it was just innings away from a championship.
"They had to call it," said Scottie Upshall. "You're not getting World Series-caliber baseball in conditions like that. But it's the way the game goes. It's an outside game and unlike football it can't really be played in monsoon weather.
"In our game, we have a roof on the building and we know there is going to be a full 60 minutes and it's not going to be called. I was there the other night when it was raining and I was thinking how do these guys go out when it's raining and freezing and go out and bare-hand pitch a ball and hit baseballs. It's a tough sport
"So now we get to look forward to a good three innings and maybe a Series title tomorrow." *
