Because of the high ticket demand by fans who want to atttend one more hockey game in the Wachovia Spectrum, the Flyers plan to add another preseason game in their former home.
The Flyers will take on the Phantoms, their AHL affiliate, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The official announcement will be made next week.
Earlier, the Flyers announced they would play a preseason game at the Spectrum against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.
Club chairman Ed Snider and president Peter Luukko "want it to be a celebration of the Spectrum for the fans who made it what it is - and give it the respect it deserves," said Shawn Tilger, the Flyers' senior vice president of business operations. "We plan to have some surprises" for the two preseason games.
This is the final year of the Spectrum, where the Flyers won their first Stanley Cup, in 1974. The arena is home to the Phantoms.
The Flyers have invited their former captains to appear in a Sept. 27 ceremony connected to the preseason game. So far, Lou Angotti, Ed Van Impe, Bob Clarke, Bill Barber, Mel Bridgman, Dave Poulin, Ron Sutter and Keith Primeau have accepted.
Eric Lindros, who had a stormy relationship with the club, has turned down the invitation because of a commitment regarding a memorial service, Tilger said.
The Flyers have invited those who played on their Stanley Cup championship teams from 1973-74 and 1974-75 to return for a ceremony Oct. 7. "Most of the guys will be back," Tilger said.
The Flyers, coming off a season in which they reached the Eastern Conference final, will open training camp in Voorhees on Sept. 20. They start their regular season Oct. 11 against the visiting New York Rangers.
Preseason single-game tickets will go on sale next Saturday - with the exception of the game against the Phantoms. Those tickets will go on sale Sept. 10.
Single-game tickets for the regular season will go on sale Sept. 20. The Flyers had a 97 percent renewal of their season tickets, Tilger said, adding that about 14,000 season tickets have been sold.
No word from Sundin. General manager Paul Holmgren said yesterday he hadn't heard from Mats Sundin's agent in nearly two weeks and still didn't know whether the free agent planned to play this season.
The Flyers have shown exploratory interest in Sundin, 37, but they are about $1 million over the salary cap, so it is a long shot that the eight-time all-star will play in Philadelphia.
Knuble golf tourney. Flyers forward Mike Knuble will host an invitational golf tournament featuring many teammates at the Talamore Country Club in Ambler on Sept. 11 starting at 1 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation and the Mike Knuble Family Foundation.
Each foursome will play with a member of the team. Knuble, Jeff Carter, Scott Hartnell, Mike Richards, Simon Gagne, Kimmo Timonen and Scottie Upshall are among the Flyers who will play.
